✨ Your breath shapes your birth ✨

When we hold our breath + push (Valsalva maneuver), pressure skyrockets, oxygen drops, and tissues are more likely to tear.

But when we exhale with sound, something shifts:
🌬️ Oxygen stays steady for both you + baby
🌸 The pelvic floor reflexively lengthens
🎶 Sound vibrations soften fascia
✨ Pressure flows with your body instead of against it

Your voice + your breath aren’t just tools… they’re medicine. 💫

🌿 Want to learn how to harness breath, sound, and deep relaxation for a calmer, more empowered birth?

We have evidence from studies involving thousands of women and babies that using water for labour and birth is safe and leads to good outcomes.

Using water also brings advantages for some women, including less need for other kinds of pain relief and increased maternal satisfaction.

But, as with many things in obstetrics, practice doesn’t always follow evidence.

Some organisations, such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, do not recommend waterbirth.

They sometimes cite anecdotal stories and hypothetical risks, while ignoring large studies which evidence that waterbirth is safe for women and babies.

This means that researchers need to keep doing more studies in order to demonstrate that woman-centred options are safe and effective.

Numerous studies evidence waterbirth safety.

I list many of them at https://www.sarawickham.com/water

✨ 5 Signs Your Partner is in Active Labour — What to Notice & How to Support ✨

1️⃣ They’re drawing their energy inward — They’re quieter, deeply focused, and may not want to chat between contractions.

2️⃣ The atmosphere in the room shifts — You’ll feel it — the space becomes more sacred, serious, or intense.

3️⃣ They move instinctively — Swaying, rocking, changing positions — their body knows what it needs.

4️⃣ 5️⃣They stop asking for things — They’re in the zone — it’s your time to anticipate needs and hold space gently without a lot of questions.

5️⃣Their voice changes — You might hear deeper tones, moans, or more primal sounds during contractions.

💛 Your steady, calm presence matters. Stay quiet, offer comfort, and protect the birth space.
