“One of my favorite things to witness and document at births is watching the children nurture and take care of their mom while she works so hard to bring the baby into their family.

These young boys’ unwavering devotion to their mother left me utterly astonished and wanting this experience for every mama out there.

What was one of your favorite ways to be supported during labor?”

Just look at the smiles on this family’s faces as they welcome their brand-new baby girl into this world. Birth is a family affair. Babies are born where babies are made. Birth in the environment where you feel most able to relax, let go and feel loved and empowered. This is homebirth, and it’s glorious. 💖

I absolutely adore this family! 💕Throughout the birth, they were just the cutest and I can’t wait to share more, but for now, here’s a little snippet of my client’s birth story: “Poppy quite literally popped out of me when she was ready and I welcomed our little girl back in the still waters of the tub just as we had with her brother a few years prior. She let out her first cry as I held her to my chest, and Leif’s eyes glistened while he burst out “she’s so gooey!” And just like that- our family was complete. Our little sunshine, Poppy Jade, arrived in a way that was just as cheeky and joyous as her growing

📣 Call for Reviewers – Preparing for Birth: Partners 📖

I'm seeking a diverse group of reviewers to read and provide feedback on my upcoming book, Preparing for Birth: Partners — a practical, supportive guide for anyone walking alongside a birthing woman.

This book is for all kinds of birth partners — not just dads. Whether you're a dad, same-sex partner, friend, sister, or chosen support person, your insights matter. I want this resource to reflect the many ways people show up to support someone through birth.

I’m especially keen to hear from:
👨‍🍼 Expectant and new fathers
👩‍👧 Expectant and new mothers
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Same-sex partners and chosen support people
🌿 Acupuncturists, Massage Therapists, Aromatherapists
🧑‍⚕️ Midwives, Doulas, Obstetricians, GPs, Early Childhood Nurses
👩‍🏫 Childbirth Educators
🗣️ Representatives from consumer advocacy groups

🗓️ I hope to have the completed draft ready by 20 June and I’ll need final feedback by 7 July. If you are available, I can send through sections of the book before this date.

You’ll receive a digital copy of the manuscript and a short confidentiality agreement to sign.

If you’re interested, please comment below or send me a message.

Thank you for helping shape a resource that supports every kind of partner on the journey to parenthood. 💛

When you are able to hold off the fuss over mom and baby as much as possible and keep the two together within the first hour after birth nature is allowed to take its course.

“The Golden Hour”is a crucial time for mama and baby.

In each of their precious bodies, massive shifts are taking place as they adjust to life’s new transition. Two separate creatures within learning to be one without. An every day miracle.

💁🏽‍♀️What do you see happening?
I see:

🌸1st latch: establishing bond of trust, familiarity and nourishment. Surges of oxytocin constracting mom’s uterus. Protecting against hemorrhage.

🌸Vernix Caseosa: the white sticky substance lubricating that new skin (Don’t wash it momma, RUB IT IN)

🌸Gentle colonization of microorganisms which help baby adjust to the outside environment.

🌸Body temperature regulation, which babies in the beginning can have a hard time doing.

🌸 Trust developing, as the two new beings birthed through this process get to know eachother.

So much more takes place when you are able to allow yourself this special time.

What an incredible photo of this glorious, natural birth. Birth is part of normal life; women have the strength within them to birth their babies. As well as this, birth is sacred; it is miraculous. The normal and the sacred all wrapped up together. This is birth. 💕

Oh, such a beautiful waterbirth! 💦

In warm water, we naturally relax and release tension. That is perfect for birth where relaxing our body means that the surges of birth can work most efficiently. 💧

A birthing pool creates a private space; a space where the mother is centre to all. Again, both of these are ideal in birth. We need to ‘turn off’ from the world around us and, with support and love, find the strength deep within to birth. 💦

Breastmilk is nature’s perfect food for little ones. It perfectly nourishes babies. Breastmilk provides stem cells as well as immunity from gastrointestinal illnesses and ear infections. It protects a child’s long-term health and increases their brain development. 💞🤱💓

Yet breastfeeding is so much more than this. Breastfeeding is a time to stop and snuggle for a toddler who is always on the go. It is staring into your mother’s eyes and knowing this is love. It is warmth and comfort. Breastfeeding is a mother’s touch and a mother’s smell. It is being held and knowing you are loved. Breastfeeding is beauty indeed. 🤱💕

In birth, we reach beyond ourselves to bring our babies earthside. Following our primal instincts, we must shut out the demands of the world outside us and draw deeper within than ever before. Then all of a sudden time stands still; as you reach out and touch him for the very first time. 💓

“Sometimes when you suffer with lots of dress rehearsal laboring, when it’s go time, it’s usually a short labor. Convincing people that I am not inconvenienced and to please call me in time takes some work. Harrison arrived less than one hour after our arrival. I love how he’s adjusting to the new world, being comforted by the coos from his parents audrey_hersheyyy and Ronnie. Adjusting to your first breath can feel uncomfortable. 💛💛💛

“Spontaneous vs directed pushing 🤔 What do you offer the women and people in your care? What do you think is most effective?

A 2017 Cochrane Review comparing directed pushing and spontaneous pushing with or without epidural analgesia found no significant differences in the duration of the second stage, perineal laceration, episiotomy, time spent pushing, or number of women with a spontaneous vaginal birth. In addition, outcomes relating to the baby, such as a five-minute Apgar score of less than seven and admission to neonatal intensive care, were not clearly different between women who spontaneously pushed and women who were directed. None of the studies reported on the outcome of babies with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy.

A more recent meta-analysis (Yao et al., 2022) looking only at women without epidural analgesia, found that spontaneous pushing during the second stage of labour results in at least the same maternal and newborn outcomes, lower Caesarean section rates and lower incidence of extended episiotomy.

In the absence of strong evidence supporting a specific method, the woman’s preference, comfort and clinical needs should guide decisions. As always - individualised care and informed consent is key!

We want to hear from YOU! What is normal in your setting? And does directed pushing usually involve offering hands-on guidance? Let us know in the comments 👇
