Why Winter is the Season to Remember You Are Worth It

As the days grow colder and nature In Ayurveda, the winter season is the time when Vata dosha increases, leaving us more prone to dryness, fatigue, scattered thoughts, and a longing for warmth and comfort.

This season isn’t just about surviving the cold — it’s about tending to your inner flame. It’s about choosing practices that nourish your heart, calm your mind, and remind your body that it is safe to slow down.

Think warm oil massages, slow cooked stews, herbal teas, and evenings lit by soft candlelight. It’s the season to embrace stillness and rituals that restore balance.

Because in the great wisdom of Ayurveda, your health isn’t just about your body — it’s about your spirit, your joy, and your ability to feel connected to yourself and the world around you.

Food for Skin

The first rule when nourishing your skin is … if you can’t eat it then think about why are you putting it on your skin!

Our skin is a reflection of the deeper ecology of the body and mind!

Understanding why skin conditions appear on the surface of the skin, is usually a hidden reason of what’s occurring deeper in our bodies. Ayurvedic science offers many reasons what might be the cause of a skin imbalance, in particular the relationship of the Pitta dosha, excess heat in the body and skin. We also must consider: digestion, blood quality, liver function, imbalances in the doshas, lifestyle, seasons and those emotions and hormones.

Developing self-awareness and understanding your dosha combination is an important part of the process to develop healthy skin!

VATA: Type skin tends to be dry, rough, itchy, thin, delicate, cracked, flakey, cold, and prone to wrinkles
and premature aging.
Recommendation: Vata skin needs moisturisation and hydration as it’s unable to retain moisture. So, make sure you drink ample warm or room temperature water, herbal teas and regularly apply natural and nourishing moisturisers to your skin. Try using some warm sesame seed oil especially on your feet at night to help you sleep well.

PITTA: Type skin tends to be warm, moist, pink or flushed, sensitive, and sweaty, with a tendency to have moles, freckles, or non-cystic acne, and it is easily sunburned in the summer months.
Recommendation: Pitta skin should be protected from harsh conditions like excessive sun exposure and intense cold dry conditions. Use natural cleansers and creams meant to protect sensitive skin.

KAPHA: Type skin tends to be heavy, thick, oily, pale, moist, cool, soft, and smooth, and is prone to clogged pores and an appearance of puffiness.
Recommendation: Kapha skin is prone to attracting oil and dirt and hence, you should focus on cleansing well. Apart from cleansing your skin everyday,
exfoliate your face once or twice a week. Aim to stay motivated and engaged with your life.

Always let the seasons dictate your skin care: Our current climate is always a significant energetic input.

How To Keep Those ‘Winter’ Bugs Away This Season

In Ayurveda, winter and early spring is known as Kapha season. Kapha combines the universal elements of Water and Earth and is responsible for stability and structure in our body, mind and environment. When water and earth are mixed together it becomes mud and these dense qualities are also represented inside and around us. Think cold, wet, soft, slow and heavy.

Imagine those qualities in the body for a second. They translate to congestion, sinus infections, coughing, asthma, sluggishness, excessive sleep, weight gain, high cholesterol, fluid retention in tissues (oedema), aching joints, poor circulation, migraines, sadness, depression, grief and unexpressed emotions.

The flu is a common one and will manifest in different areas of the body depending where it enters from. So, what can you do to help rid the flu faster? Well, firstly by following a healthy diet, lifestyle and taking herbs to boost immunity and prevent it happening in the first place.

REST
It’s always best.

Protect from cold and wind
Especially if you live and work out in the open or by the beach where the winds are higher. Keep your head, ears and neck warm and protected. Ear plugs, muffs and scarves are a great investment to keep warm.

Keep your environment clean
During winter, Ayurvedic hygiene emphasises keeping the home warm, clean, and fragrant with natural herbs like camphor and eucalyptus to balance Kapha and ward off seasonal ailments. Both camphor and eucalyptus offer respiratory support, purify the air, calming and balancing of the doshas and mind qualities.

Try oil pulling
Oil pulling is a popular trend for good reason. It is literally pulling out toxins, supporting oral health whilst also lubricating the whole neck, head and throat area. Try gargling with some black sesame oil twice a day for 3-5 minutes.

Drink only warm water or herbal water
Drinking hot water is something to get used to all year round to naturally aid digestion and flush toxins out of the body. It’s not about quantity, but more about frequency and ideally every 30 minutes you should take a sip. You can also try adding turmeric, black pepper, cumin and ginger to assist. Ice cold drinks (and foods) will put out the digestive fire and constrict the body's channels.

Avoid heavy foods especially in the evening
They will only make you feel worse. These types of foods to avoid are: meat, cheese, ice-cream, yoghurt, and fried food. Go for light, cooked and warm meals with plenty of seasonal vegetables, legumes and grains. Aim to have your meat and fish during the daytime for lunch so you can easily digest your food in the afternoon and have a lighter meal in the evening. Aim to finish eating by 7.30pm if you can. The rule of thumb for yoghurt is to have it during the day and to eat it alone (not with fruit) or leave it alone.

Steam
Try some good old fashion steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil or special medicated oil. Pop boiling water into a bowl, add a few drops, and start breathing it in. Or sprinkle a few drops on the floor of the shower and take a nice hot one and breathe in the steam.

Stay well

Feeling Dry, Tired, and Depleted? Let Ayurveda Help You Rebalance

Many of us are noticing dryness creeping into our skin, hair, lips, and even our mood. According to Ayurveda, this is a sign of increased Vata dosha - the energy of air and space - which can leave us feeling scattered, dehydrated, tired and out of sync.

But the good news is, nature always offers a remedy!
Here are a few simple Ayurvedic tips to restore moisture, calm, and balance:

Nourish from the inside: Sip warm herbal teas like licorice, fennel, or ginger throughout the day. Swap out dry, cold foods for warm, soupy, and oily meals like stews, porridges, and kitchari.

Self-abhyanga (oil massage): Before your shower, gently massage warm sesame or almond oil over your body. It’s deeply grounding and replenishing for dry, stressed skin.

Moisturise your mind: Slow down, breathe deeply, and take time for mindful practices like yoga, meditation, or simply sitting with a cup of tea in silence.

Stay warm and hydrated: Avoid cold drinks and excessive exposure to wind and air conditioning. Favour warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and cumin in your meals.

Listen to your wise body…it’s telling you what it needs. A little extra care, nourishment, good quality sleep and emotional grounding can make a world of difference for you.

Magical Ayurvedic Retreat in the Himalayas!

We recently returned from our first 14 night/15 day Wellness Retreat at Ketav Ayush Health Paradise, Gopalpur, Kangra District, where the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda meets the pure, healing energy of the Himalayas.

Every day was an experience….. Pristine nature, fresh mountain air, sattvic diet, authentic Ayurvedic healing personalised treatments, Panchakarma detox and herbal nutrition, meditation and yoga in the morning. Everything in the program was designed for deep rejuvenation and inner transformation in a magical environment for healing.

Our Ketav team was lead and hosted by Mr Jitender and Mrs Pankaj Sodhi, Dr Seema Santoshi and Diksha Gautam BDM. We are deeply grateful to our incredible team and generous hosts for making this Ayurvedic retreat in the Himalayas a truly transformative experience.

Their dedication, warmth, and expertise created a sanctuary of healing, wisdom, and renewal. From the heartfelt guidance to the seamless organisation - every detail reflected their passion and care. This journey would not have been the same without their kindness and commitment, and we carry this gratitude in our hearts.

Next Retreat:
We are offering the next 15 day Retreat in September/October. The final dates are still to be confirmed.
Shared accommodation only. Great for couples, friends to cleanse together. Expressions of interest are most welcome. We only have availability for 8 guests now. Please DM us if interested.
