***SHOCK STATISTIC***
There was a story on The Project which highlighted that female cardiac arrest victims were 50% less likely to have CPR and defibrillation performed on them compared to men!
This story horrified us here at CK First Aid, so we did a bit of investigation as to why this statistic existed and to provide some accurate information.
1. Men were reluctant to perform CPR and use a defibrillator on women as they were worried they could be sued for sexual harassment.
Totally incorrect!! Here in Australia, we have the Good Samaritan Act which protects bystanders as long as they stay within their scope of practice and skills.
2. Bystanders were worried about causing embarrassment to the patient.
Believe me, patients do not have time to be embarrassed if they are having a Cardiac Arrest and would much rather have their life saved!
3. People were unsure of how to perform CPR on someone with breasts.
This is the only seemingly valid reason. BUT CPR technique is the same for everyone!
As a way of trying to educate and improve these numbers, and subsequently outcomes, for women having a cardiac arrest, CK First Aid will have a female manikin available to practice CPR and defibrillation on in all of our classes. We hope this means that people have the chance to ask questions in a safe environment and ensure that if ever faced with the possibility, they will be able to provide effective CPR and defibrillation to all patients no matter their gender.
Please see the link below to the interview conducted on the Project.
Comment below if this statistic shocked you too!
