Being able to set boundaries is a crucial part of our mental health & well being. Having healthy boundaries is not only beneficial for self-care, it protects and empowers us.

There are several types of boundaries (e.g. emotional, time, physical). Healthy boundaries may vary depending on the type and situation - you may set different boundaries with a partner than that of a friend or work colleague.

Creating healthy boundaries also goes both ways, meaning that if you want others to respect your boundaries, you also need to respect theirs even if they are different to yours.

Image: R U OK Day

You don’t need to be an expert to have an R U OK? conversation with someone who might be struggling.

We may think we need to have answers, but you only need to listen to the response with an open mind.

🔘Take what they say seriously and don't interrupt or rush the conversation
🔘Don't judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them
🔘If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence
🔘Encourage them to explain: "How are you feeling about that?" or "How long have you felt that way?"
🔘Show that you've listened by repeating back what you've heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly.

Ask R U OK? No qualifications needed, because a conversation could change a life.
