Some ticks in Tasmania carry bacteria that can make people very sick.

Ticks can also cause allergies and anaphylaxis.

There are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from tick bites:

πŸ‘‰ Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing that covers as much of your body as possible. Light colours help you spot ticks before they attach. Tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks.

πŸ‘‰ Use approved insect repellents containing DEET (Diethyl toluamide), picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) on exposed skin. Follow the directions on the label.

πŸ‘‰ Treat your clothing and gear with the insecticide permethrin.

πŸ‘‰ Check your skin for ticks when you come inside. If you’ve spent time in areas where ticks may be common, place clothes in a hot dryer for 20 minutes to kill any ticks.

First aid for tick bites:

1. Find out if a person is allergic to ticks. If they are allergic, do not disturb the tick and seek urgent medical assistance at the nearest emergency department or call triple zero (000). Ensure their adrenaline autoinjector (EpiPen or AnaPen) is available in case it is needed.

2. For people who are NOT allergic, and the tick is easily visible - β€˜freeze it, don’t squeeze it’. Kill the tick as soon as possible by freezing it with ether-containing sprays (available at pharmacies). If the tick does not drop off after following the instructions on the spray, leave the tick in place and seek medical assistance.

πŸ‘‰ ”Freeze it, don’t squeeze it”. NEVER forcibly remove a tick by squeezing, pulling, twisting or other means.

πŸ‘‰ DO NOT use household tweezers to remove a tick, do not jerk or twist the tick. Don't use methylated spirits, kerosene, petroleum jelly, nail polish, oil, alcohol or a lighted match.

πŸ§‘πŸΌβ€βš•οΈ See a doctor if you can’t kill a tick or if any part of the tick is left in the skin.

Some mosquitoes in Tasmania carry viruses that can make people sick.

You can protect yourself and your family by taking steps to avoid being bitten: πŸ‘‡

β€’ Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing that covers as much of your body as possible - mosquitoes can bite through tight-fitting clothing.

β€’ Take extra care during times of increased mosquito activity, particularly at dawn and dusk.

β€’ Use insect repellents containing DEET (Diethyl toluamide), picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin. Apply sunscreen first, then repellent.

β€’ Put insect screens on windows and doors. If using insect screens is not possible, use a mosquito net.

β€’ Empty out any containers collecting water around your home where mosquitoes might lay their eggs, to stop mosquitoes breeding nearby.

β€’ Use fly sprays and plug-in repellent devices indoors.

β€’ Use mosquito coils in outdoor areas where you gather to sit or eat.

β€’ If you are travelling, be aware of any mosquito-borne illnesses in other areas of Australia and overseas. Check local health advice and consider getting travel vaccines if recommended.

WE ARE ABOUT TO BECOME A FULLY BULK BILLING PRACTICE FROM 1 NOVEMBER 2025

As a result of changes to Medicare rebates and incentives which will apply to all patients, the Tasman Medical Practice has decided to become a fully bulk billing practice, effective from 1 November 2025. Therefore, all patients, registered with Medicare, will be bulk billed for all services from that date and we will no longer apply any private billings to those patients.
This decision has been made as a result of a considerable extra investment in Medicare by the Federal Government which encourages general practices to adopt more bulk billing.
