It has been a while since we have had the opportunity to post. The Cemetery grounds are currently not being presented as we would like. Each year during summer we find ourselves chasing our tails, but this year is a whole other level. Our volunteer programs had to be suspended due to COVID-19, thankfully some are now returning. The incredible rainfall this year has impeded us getting our mowers out to combat the increased growth but we can't start the mowing until the ground has dried out enough so as to not rip the lawns up.
Our priority has to be facilitating funerals which we have been able to do with minimal disruption,
before we can turn to grounds maintenance. We are now starting to catch up and would like to thank our visitors and community for your understanding.

With ANZAC Day tomorrow, we will all be commemorating in a different way due to the social distancing restrictions we have currently. Earlier this week an idea of visiting graves at our Cemetery was flagged. The restrictions make this difficult as visiting graves has been classified as non-essential. In order to virtually visit the graves of our veterans I have created a Roll of Honour. Please feel free to visit the deceased search page of our website: http://vmsos.catholic.net.au:8008/mapguide/nudgee/public/ once you enter the Surname and “Search”, “Show on Map” then “Open Image” a photo of the grave will display on your device. While this is not quite the same as physically visiting it does give us the opportunity of taking time to remember.

November 2 (Saturday) marks All Souls Day, a day when we can come together to remember and pray for those who have died. This year there will again be services in the grounds of Nudgee Cemetery and Crematorium. Last year a number of people asked for a personal way of remembrance throughout the year and opted for a remembrance acndle. These are available through our office. Ph. 3324 3499.

In the late 1800s cemetery picnics were common. In the last 10 years more picnics are being hosted in cemeteries. Is this a revival of the old trend?

Here is a photo taken by our friends at ClearSkyAviation showing a broad view of the Cemetery. Some years ago a visitor came to visit the grave of her grandfather. Her grandfather had died around ten years before her visit but distance (America) stopped her from visiting. The lady said to me at her grandfather's grave, "If only I could have done this online". With that in mind I took photos of every grave and catalogued them and attached the images to our website. Now anyone can virtually visit the grave of family and friends from anywhere in the world by visiting www.nudgeecemetery.com.au and clicking on "Deceased Search". That one lady's comment was proof of the importance visiting and remembering our loved one is in the grieving process.

As today is marked as All Saint's Day, a day when the faithful will celebrate the feast All Saint's, it may also be referred to as All Hallow's Day. Yesterday therefore was All Hallows Eve in what would be shortened to Halloween.
As the 1st August is a day known has the Horses Birthday, while we know that horses are born throughout the year August 1 is the day that marks them becoming a year older.
Tomorrow is All Souls Day, a day to remember All those who have died. While the anniversary of a person's death is marked each year and we remember that person on that day, tomorrow is a day that we can support others who have lost, and be supported in our own loss.
A rememberance service commencing at 10.30am in the informal setting of the Garden Marquee of Nudgee Cemetery and Crematorium will be conducted for all those who have gone before us.
All Welcome.

Recent rumours about the ###X Milton Brewery threatened for closure would most certainly be a concern for George Wilkie Gray. George was the Managing Director of Castlemaine Perkins when the famous brew label went from ### to ###X and is buried at Nudgee Cemetery Portion E Section 9 Allotment 2.
George was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council in 1894, he held that office until the Council was abolished in 1922.
George died in 1924 and his funeral moved from St Cecilia's Hamilton to Nudgee Cemetery.
In his will his life insurances were assigned to the Sisters of Mercy and these funds were used to build The Mater Children's Hospital.
Our Cemeteries are the respectful custodians of so much history.

Do you love to roam through cemeteries when you're on holiday? If so, there's a word for what you've got: taphophilia.

Last week we gathered in Townsville for the Queensland Cemeteries and Crematoria Association conference. The conference was attended by people working in the industry from all around the state.
One session was presented by a bereavement support group with a focus on working with survivors of su***de. I have attended many conferences over the years but in Townsville I took one powerful message from this session.
The only cure for grief, is to grieve.
All too often we avoid dealing with our grief, me included. Today I took the time to visit the Cemetery and remember. While nothing will ever fill the void they left, that visit brought a smile to my face as I remembered them with love.
