If you rest with your teeth together, the muscles around your jaw are active and not relaxed. Correct natural resting posture of the jaw is teeth slightly apart, lips closed, and tongue on roof of your mouth. This ensures the muscles naturally relax around the jaw, so they are not working hard all of the time.

If you have issues with your jaw, TMJ/jaw physiotherapy can be very effective. A physiotherapist can provide you with exercises and strategies to reduce the tension or other symptoms, as well as provide treatment to give you relief.

The early months of motherhood involve many physical demands. Feeding, lifting, carrying, bathing, and soothing a baby often require repetitive movements and prolonged postures (link to new blog) that can place stress on the neck, shoulders, and back.

For mothers recovering from birth, especially after a Caesarean delivery, these physical demands can feel even more challenging. Supporting your body with good ergonomics and simple movement strategies can help reduce strain and support recovery during the postpartum period.

After birth, much of a parent’s day involves caring for their baby through repetitive activities such as bathing, dressing, lifting, and using car seats. While these tasks may seem simple, they often require bending forward, reaching, and lifting in positions that can place significant strain on the neck, shoulders, and back.

Over time, these repetitive movements can contribute to postural strain and musculoskeletal discomfort, particularly in the neck and upper back.

Understanding how everyday baby-care activities affect posture can help parents protect their bodies while caring for their child.

Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is a relatively common voice disorder, often caused by excessive tension of muscles around the jaw and larynx (voice box). Symptoms may include a strained, weak or hoarse sounding speech which will often fatigue with use. Pain or tension around the neck, throat, or jaw is also common.

Vocal physiotherapy can play a role in your rehabilitation by reducing the tension in the surrounding muscles, as well as giving you specific exercises to help.

Breastfeeding is one of the most beautiful ways to connect with your baby. However, the long hours spent feeding can place significant strain on a mother’s neck, shoulders, and upper back, especially when posture is not well supported.

One of the most common issues seen in postpartum mothers is Head Forward Posture (HFP), which can develop quickly during the breastfeeding months. Understanding how posture affects the neck during feeding can help prevent pain and long-term musculoskeletal problems.

Did you know the jaw joint has a disc inside it? When this disc is sitting slightly forward, you may experience clicking sensations with opening/closing your mouth. The technical term for this is Anterior Disc Displacement with Reduction.

When the disc is sitting too far forward and is somewhat 'stuck' forward - you often get what is called a lock jaw in which movement is very restricted and often painful.

The technical term for this is Anterior Disc Displacement without Reduction.

Both of these presentations are common and we see them in the clinic regularly.

Physiotherapy for the jaw is can be very effective and can resolve locked or clicking jaws. For more information on jaw (TMJ) physiotherapy visit our website:
