Many in our local community know Jess, her beautiful smile lighting up every room she walked into.

We are holding Jess and her children gently in our thoughts. We also acknowledge the heartbreaking loss of their dad, and send our deepest condolences to all who loved him.

The Browns have shared ways the community can support Jess and her children as they face the days ahead. Any support, big or small, will make a meaningful difference during this incredibly difficult time.

If anyone in our community is needing support following this incident, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You don’t have to navigate this alone. 🤍

You may have heard the term Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)… but what does it actually mean?

A Functional Capacity Assessment looks at how your child manages everyday life, not just their diagnosis, but how they function across things like:
• emotional regulation
• communication
• social interaction
• independence and daily living
• learning and participation
• sensory needs

For many families, an FCA is completed as part of their NDIS journey.

It helps provide a clearer understanding of your child’s strengths, challenges and support needs, and is often used to:
• guide therapy recommendations
• identify developmental supports
• support NDIS access or plan reviews
• inform funding decisions

A good FCA tells the story of your child, how they experience the world and what supports will help them feel more confident and capable in their everyday life.

At The Nurtured Village, our assessments focus on understanding the whole child, so families can access supports that truly meet their needs 🌿

One of the questions we hear often from families is:

“What’s the difference between a Developmental Educator and an Occupational Therapist?”

Both roles support children to participate more comfortably in everyday life but they often focus on different areas of development.

An Occupational Therapist (OT) may support things like sensory processing, motor skills, coordination, handwriting and daily living tasks.

A Developmental Educator (DE) often focuses on emotional regulation, social understanding, independence, problem solving and navigating everyday environments like school and community.

There can be overlap, and many children benefit from both supports working together.

The most important thing is finding the supports that best meet your child’s individual needs and developmental goals.

At The Nurtured Village, we work collaboratively with families and other professionals to support the whole child.

Save this post if you’ve ever wondered about the difference.

You may have heard the term Developmental Educator… but many families aren’t quite sure what they actually do.

A Developmental Educator supports children in building the everyday skills that help them feel more confident, capable and understood.

This can include things like:
• emotional regulation
• social skills
• independence
• routines and daily living skills
• navigating school and friendships
• understanding themselves and their needs

At The Nurtured Village, our Developmental Educators work alongside families, therapists and schools to support the whole child — because development happens within relationships, community and safety.

Save this post if you’re navigating supports for your child 💛

And if you’ve ever wondered whether Developmental Education could help your child, our inbox is always open.

After handing out Body Safety Bookmarks at the Child & Family Expo on Sunday, I wanted to share a few of my absolute favourite resources for continuing those conversations at home, the Little BIG Chats books 💛

These gorgeous little reads by Jayneen Sanders open up big topics like consent, body safety, and respect in ways that make sense to kids — gentle, empowering, and age-appropriate.

When we give kids the language for boundaries, safety, and connection, we give them the tools to understand themselves and others. These books make that learning feel safe, playful, and full of heart.

Because big conversations don’t have to be scary — they can start small, with stories like these.

So excited to be a part of this wonderful initiative 👏🏼

Ever picked your child up from school only to be met with grumpiness, tears, or complete silence?

You’re not alone — and your child isn’t being “naughty.” Their nervous system is just running on empty.

After a full day of listening, learning, holding it together, and navigating social dynamics, kids often hit their limit. That’s where the HALT tool can help.

💛 HALT = Hungry, Angry/ Anxious, Lonely, Tired.
These unmet needs can trigger emotional dysregulation, especially in sensitive or neurodivergent kids.

Before we label the after-school meltdown as bad behaviour, let’s pause and ask:
👉 Are they hungry?
👉 Are they holding onto some big feelings?
👉 Did they feel disconnected today?
👉 Are they simply exhausted?

When we meet these needs with curiosity and care, we support their nervous system to feel safe again.

📲 Swipe through to learn how the HALT tool can help your child transition gently from school to home.

You’re not a bad parent. They’re not a bad kid. There’s just a need under the behaviour.

Sensory play isn’t just fun—it’s therapeutic and we are loving our new .designs trays from 💚⁣

In counselling sessions, sensory trays like this one help children regulate their nervous systems, process big emotions, and build confidence through play.

By engaging the senses—touch, sight, sound—children are gently supported to explore, express, and feel safe.

From tiny tractors to tactile rice and hidden veggies, every element is intentional. It’s not just play—it’s healing, connection, and growth in action 🌱
