Welcome to a new year filled with hopes and positivity all around !!

Hello friends, the holiday season is over for most of us by now, I know there are a few lucky ones out there enjoying a longer than usual holiday break, and I wish them the best of luck. This holiday season generally over-stresses our digestive system due to overeating and drinking, and that too most of the time in an incompatible way that is not conducive to our digestive system.

I would like to share a few suggestions with you that will help you to slowly bring this over-stressed digestive system to a more balanced state, assuming you were in a well balanced state.

1) Do not eat if you are not feeling for it. You might not be feeling for it because there are chances of undigested food in the gut, or accumulation of toxins. In both cases, you need to eat light or even skip a meal if you are not feeling for it. You may need to detoxify your body as well depending upon your situation.

2) Drink lukewarm water only. I know we are accustomed to drinking cold water but you will realize how drinking lukewarm water enhances your digestion.

3) If possible, consume a couple of slices of fresh ginger soaked with lime and black salt 20 minutes before your meal.

4) Choose warm and fresh cooked food over frozen or processed meals.

5) Avoid carbonated drinks. I know it's tough but these drinks hinder the digestion process.

Health is not 𝗟𝗨𝗖𝗞 but by choice. Health is primarily our own creation, and definitely not a state by chance. Our own choices of food and lifestyle has the biggest impact on our physical, mental and emotional well-being. When we talk about Lifestyle, I am certainly not merely referring to your physical exercise such as gym, running, dancing, sports or any other recreational activities but with your overall physical and mental activities you perform throughout the day. Now the question arises how do those various activities of your lifestyle affect your physical, mental and emotional well being? Or are you one of those who are doing those activities just because others are doing or even maybe because the internet says so?

Ayurveda advocates a lifestyle, which is conducive to 𝙔𝙊𝙐𝙍 physical, mental and emotional well-being, and is chosen by carefully analyzing your unique bodily intelligence (you can call it unique body makeup, Prakriti or DNA programming).

Having said that, there are activities more aligned with certain critical junctions/time during the day that provide an opportunity to sustain your overall well being. These various activities are an important part of an Ayurvedic Lifestyle with prime focus on reducing toxins from your body. In this HEALTHY by choice series, we will be discussing few important daily regimes that Ayurveda recommends for a balanced physical, mental and emotional well-being.

In this first post on this series I would like to stress upon the most important daily activity to incorporate in your lifestyle, that is is to scrap your tongue with a tongue scrapper as a first thing in the morning when you wake up.

1) Stick your tongue out but in relaxed state.
2) Start with the central part of the tongue where you scrap gently from the back of the tongue towards the front of the tongue. You can do this 2-3 times.

Initially you may feel gagging or discomfort because you are not use to clean your tongue in this fashion but in few days you will get use to this procedure. These tongue scrappers are available in different material but Copper is the best metal to detoxify and does not carry impurities. You can easily buy these tongue scrappers online.

Today is a special day for all Ayurveda students, enthusiasts, practitioners and followers all over the world as this is the day to pay our special respect to Lord Dhanvantari who brought science of Ayurveda to mankind. Whole universe is a manifestation of Energy in different forms and processes. Everything we experience in our life is a different manifestation of some form of Energy, even when we talk about natural laws. These natural laws are also manifestation of a vortex of Energy functioning it its own peculiar ways to implement certain phenomena such as germination of a seed. In a similar way for a modern mind Lord Dhanvantari can also be thought of as a very unique and special energy vortex instrumental in the science of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is an ancient medicine system being practiced through out in Asia for more than 5000 years. Being a complete holistic medicine system Ayurveda has its own advantages, strengths and unique treatment principles. Ayurveda advocates understanding the root cause/s of toxins in the body and process of removal of those root causes, which are wrong choices of food and lifestyle that are producing toxins in the body to achieve a balanced physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Are you Healthy?

You are called Healthy only when your bodily intelligence, your metabolic processes, various bodily tissues (plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow and reproductive tissues such as o**m and semen), waste management in the body such as urine, stool, sweat and other metabolic wastes are all well balanced, and YOU are feeling happy, joyful while your senses feeling satiated and contented.

Ayurveda takes a very holistic approach by healing the body, mind and emotions as a whole. Mind and body are connected together in a Psychosomatic relationship where stresses in the Mind will affect the body organs, tissues and various physiological functions. Similarly your physical body is also continuously affecting your mental and emotional well-being. Unlike other Medical modalities diagnosis and analysis of any dis-ease in Ayurveda is not done in isolation but the whole interaction among physical, mental and emotional bodies is taken into consideration.

Quite interestingly, our ancient scientists have named this state of being Healthy in Sanskrit language as 𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒉𝒂, which means to be established in yourself. What a beautiful way to describe this state of being healthy in a joyful mood. One cannot remain in himself/herself unless his/her physical, mental and emotional wellbeing is in a balanced state that can only be achieved by understanding which food, lifestyle and activities are conducive to achieve this balance for YOU. This is where Ayurveda can help you to make you aware how your choices of diet, lifestyle and activities are affecting your state of being Healthy so you can ascertain in a true sense whether you are 𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒉𝒂 (Healthy) or not. Always remember each one of us has born with a UNIQUE blueprint hence any food, activity will affect each of us in a unique way.

It should not surprise then why the World Health Organization has also adopted the following statement giving equal importance to your mental and social well-being.

"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
