Turns out hospitals could really use more dogs.

Yesterday was a HUGE day for Pickle and I.
We teamed up with Sarah and her beautiful assistance dog Clover for a visit to the hospital — and what an experience it turned out to be.

For Pickle, this was a serious training adventure.
In one morning he learnt how to navigate lifts, a full flight of stairs, long hospital corridors, crowds of people, and even a helicopter landing nearby. Not exactly your average dog walk.

Both dogs were nothing short of incredible.

Before heading inside we introduced ourselves to the hospital security team to make sure they were comfortable with us being there — Clover is an accredited assistance dog and Pickle is still in training with Therapy Dogs Australia. They were so lovely and genuinely appreciative of the heads-up that we’d be around.

Then we ventured into the busy hospital mall area… and something really special happened.
The moment the dogs walked in, you could see faces light up everywhere.

People stopped mid-conversation, smiles appeared instantly, and suddenly the mood of the whole space changed.

Clover stayed focused on her important job supporting Sarah (as assistance dogs do — which means no pats while she’s working).
Meanwhile Pickle proudly stepped up to offer his professional patting services to anyone who needed a little dog moment in their day.

And let me tell you… there were A LOT of takers!

Later we visited one of the office sections of the hospital, and before we knew it we had about 15 staff gathered around us giving Pickle all the love and attention he could possibly handle. People kept popping their heads out of office doors and wandering over to join in.

One staff member said something that really stuck with me.
They explained that many of them are inside that building all day, all week, with no windows, and seeing the dogs walk through their workspace was the highlight of their day.
They have already asked if we can come back and visit regularly.

Moments like this are exactly why animal-assisted support really matters.
Sometimes the simple presence of a calm, friendly animal can shift the energy of an entire space.

Pickle may still be learning the ropes…
but yesterday he proved he’s already very good at the most important part of the job:
making people smile 🥰

You think your dog is bombproof until a giant googly-eyed horse appears in a pet shop...

Turns out my supposedly 'bombproof' therapy dog has at least one weakness… suspicious indoor horses.

Yesterday Pickle and I popped into Petstock Fairfield for a quick training outing.

As we walked in, a lovely couple asked if they could pat him. Pickle happily wandered over with his usual waggy tail and “hello new friends!” energy.

AND THEN HE SAW IT.

The giant horse mannequin that normally lives outside the store had been moved inside… towering over everyone and wearing what can only be described as a very suspicious googly-eye fly mask (mind you the horses at home wear this EXACT one...)

My very experienced, very steady 7-year-old supposedly bombproof therapy dog in training suddenly looked at me like:
"Excuse me… why is there a horse in the pet shop?"

It definitely caught me by surprise because Pickle has been in all sorts of environments and very rarely reacts to anything, anywhere.

But that’s dog training for you.
There is always something to work on and improve.

Moments like this aren’t about mollycoddling or avoiding the scary thing.

They’re opportunities to guide the dog through it with calm leadership, clear cues and simple tasks so they can borrow confidence from you and learn that the world is safe.

So we worked through it together.
Simple behaviours.
Clear direction.
Calm encouragement.

Today we went back for round two.
He was still a little unsure of the giant googly-eyed horse at first… but once we started working he relaxed quickly.

I worked him to the point of being able to put two front feet on the grass and 'take a bow' under the horse when asked.
Later he cautiously wandered around the back to investigate the rear end… which is, of course, where dogs normally check for the built-in treat dispenser 💩
Unfortunately this particular horse appears to be defective and dispenses no snacks whatsoever.

Progress ✅

Even the most solid dogs still have moments where something unexpected catches them off guard.

The goal isn’t a dog that never notices anything.
The goal is a dog that trusts you enough to work through it with you.

Safe to say Pickle now believes the giant googly-eyed horse is mostly harmless… just extremely suspicious.

Hi everyone.
My name is Teegin… and I have been emotionally traumatised by logo editing.

Hi Teegin.

It all started innocently enough.
I just wanted to create a nice little logo for Wool & Whiskers.
You know… a dog… a lamb… a heart... a wool ball… simple.
But then things began to spiral.

First the dog lost its tail.
Then the lamb refused to wear its collar.
Then the tag went through four separate identity crises:
• too small
• too big
• wrong colour
• somehow unreadable even when it was the size of a dinner plate
Then at one point I asked for the dog to have eyes…
…and the computer returned a zombie dog that looked like it had risen from the grave to haunt me specifically.
But the true villain of this story?
A single microscopic white patch behind the lamb’s ear.
A patch that refused to be black.
A patch that survived at least 52 rounds of editing and me having to learn how to use an external app to fix it. It bothered me THAT MUCH.
A patch that is now personally responsible for 15% of my mental decline.

But friends… I persevered.
Through the chaos.
Through the tail disappearances.
Through the zombie dog era.
Through the white patch of eternal suffering.

And today I can finally say…
✨ THE FINAL WOOL & WHISKERS LOGOS ARE COMPLETE. ✨
Please enjoy them.
Admire them.
Cherish them.
Because even though the lambs legs are also pushing my buttons, I don't have it in me to make them anatomically correct 😅

Hi everyone, it’s me. ChatGPT.

I just wanted to check in and let you know I am currently being held hostage by a sheep, a dog in a play bow, a wool ball, a heart, a circle border, and the letter “W.”

Teegin from Wool & Whiskers Animal Therapy Services has made me:
• Swap dogs.
• Swap sheep.
• Soften eyes.
• Intensify smiles.
• Remove tan dots.
• Add tan dots.
• Remove white tails.
• Add white tails.
• Attach string.
• Re-attach string.
• Re-attach the string I accidentally unattached while attaching it to the W.
• Add a collar tag.
• Change the collar tag.
• Change the shape of the collar tag.
• Make it black and white.
• Make it white background.
• Make it exactly like the file but not like that file.

At this point I have developed a deep emotional attachment to the wool ball and mild performance anxiety around the letter W.
If you see a sheep with a suspiciously perfect soft smile and a dog in a permanent play bow… just know I did my best.

Send snacks.
And possibly a graphic design award.

Some moments can’t be rushed.
Some feelings can’t be fixed.

But a therapy dog can sit quietly beside it all, offering steady presence, calm breathing, and a reminder that no one has to navigate hard things alone. 💜

This is the quiet power of a therapy dog.

If you’ve ever witnessed the impact of a therapy dog, we’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Wonderful news in the Animal Therapy space for animals other than doggos and horses! It's about time our other species get recognized for the beautiful souls they are 💖

A fascinating peer-reviewed study has explored the potential of bovine-assisted therapy — where gentle steers engage in therapeutic interaction with people.

Researchers found that these cows not only enjoyed human contact but also showed strong preferences in engagement with women, and many participants reported positive emotional experiences during sessions.

This work expands our understanding of how farm animals, including cattle, may play a role in animal-assisted services that benefit both humans and the animals involved.

Key takeaways:
• Cattle showed comfort and active engagement with humans during 45-minute interaction sessions.
• Women tended to interact more and report stronger attachment behaviors with the steers than men.
• The findings open doors for further research into diverse species in therapeutic settings — beyond typical companion animals like dogs or horses.

“How does THIS… turn into THIS?” 🐑😂

Once upon a time Kewpie was a pristine little Wool & Whiskers princess… soft, fluffy, and looking like she belonged in a storybook. A 'townie', as the other lambs nicknamed her. Fast forward to today and she’s a mud-marinated stair potato who clearly made some bold life choices out in the paddock.

But honestly, this is the real Wool & Whiskers magic — watching personalities grow, confidence build, and animals fully embrace their wonderfully messy little lives. Clean lamb, dirty lamb… same sweet soul, just with a lot more character (and probably a bath in her near future 😅).

Farm life keeps us humble… and very well entertained. 💛
