Oakbank volunteers were recently treated to an excellent training session in horse handling presented by Natasha Cockburn who is an Equestrian Australia Coach, a National Dressage rider and owner of Oakwood Equestrian Academy. The training, which was run twice, was funded by a Volunteer Grant and held at Oakwood Park at Oakbank. All attendees appreciated Natashaโ€™s experience and her ability to make the sessions fun and informative. They especially enjoyed the opportunity to ride Zotti or Mischief! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿด

Happy Easter to everyone from RDA Oakbank.
Our riders enjoyed some easter themed activities to finish the term including an easter egg hunt (on horseback) in the cross-country paddock.

Our horses are enjoying the break. Lucy and Arby are on vacation being spoilt by Lisa, whilst Clyde and Raisin are enjoying being in the large paddock.

We hope everyone has a safe and happy Easter! ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿฅ•

๐Ÿ’š *Vale Wally* ๐Ÿ’š
It is with very heavy hearts that we said goodbye to our dear Wally on March 10th whose health deteriorated suddenly. Wally would have been 37 this year!

Wally, a 12.1 hh Welsh Cob, came to our Centre in 2011 and has been the *best* RDA pony we could have wished for. ๐Ÿฅ‡We are grateful to Lisa James for leasing Wally to us for all these years. He has been an ideal pony, especially for beginner riders, showing great patience with them and allowing them to experience the freedom and joy that riding brings. While we retired Wally from carrying riders a few years ago, he has been happy to be led and groomed in unmounted lessons.

Wally won the best horse award several times at RDA competitions and he was a star at the 2018 Special Olympics where his young Queensland rider was besotted with him. ๐Ÿ†
He has touched the lives of countless riders and their families and volunteers. We all loved his character, his energy and his enthusiasm for life. ๐Ÿ˜
Thank you Wally for giving so much joy to so many. You will be greatly missed.

Love from the RDA Oakbank community, past and present. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿด

Our President Frances Hardy, was recently invited to the Lions Club of Onkaparinga Inc. dinner meeting to speak about our Centre and what we have been doing. It was a great opportunity to thank the Club for their many years of generous support.

We bid a heartfelt farewell to two wonderful RDA volunteers, Bev and Bronwyn. As they have selflessly dedicated their time to feeding our horses, the photo on the front of their cards served as a poignant reminder of the joyous moments they spent braving the elements!
Thank you Bev and Bronwyn for your tireless contributions and countless hours spent volunteering at RDA Oakbank. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ‘

Our Centre

Riding for Disabled Oakbank Centre is one of 12 centres across South Australia that are formally affiliated with Riding for the Disabled South Australia (RDASA), whose mission is to be a respected, inclusive and sustainable organisation delivering a diverse range of equestrian programs for people requiring support to participate. As a member of RDASA, our centre is a registered National Disability Insurance Scheme provider.

RDA Oakbank (previously RDA Mt Barker) has been operating since 1980 by local volunteers. We are based at the Oakbank Racecourse and currently share our facilities with the Onkaparinga Pony Club in South Australia's picturesque Adelaide Hills. We provide specialised horse-riding programs and relationships with horses for mostly young people with physical, intellectual, learning and emotional disabilities. Facilitating this service requires a high degree of skill and training. At Oakbank we have RDA Australia accredited volunteer coaches, other trained volunteers with a diversity of skills, and specially trained and RDA accredited horses and ponies.

Needless to say, our horses are the core of our program. Our precious herd of horses has dwindled over the past six years from eight to three. This limits the number and sizes of riders we can accommodate. Accreditation as an RDA horse is very rigorous and the qualities needed for an effective RDA horse are very hard to find. Our horses need a very rare mix of soundness, good temperament, patience, and awareness of each individual riderโ€™s needs. We have been looking for suitable horses for several years but have yet to successfully add to our herd long term.

For the past eight years RDA Oakbank has been diligently fundraising and seeking sponsorship so that we can build an enclosed arena to enable riders to enjoy lessons despite weather extremes. Weโ€™ve just redeveloped our strategic plan to give focus to the steps needed to grow our herd and rider numbers, raise funds for our enclosed arena and develop new horse therapy programs. RDA Oakbank might be a small organisation, but we have big dreams! New sponsors, volunteers or interested clients are welcome to give us a call between 8:30am-3:30pm on weekdays or reach out online.
