Christina is a degree-qualified Naturopath who works out of Whole Body Health and Wellness in both Ocean Grove and Geelong West. Christina qualified with her Health Science degree from Southern School of Natural Therapies in early 2022. All Naturopaths operate slightly differently - from the ultra alternative to the more evidence-based, integrative model, you may have gathered Christina leans towards the latter. Every prescription Christina gives is backed up by science, and individualised for your specific situation. Christina loves working with her patients to empower them to take back their health and prevent illness from occurring or worsening. Christina works with a patient-centred approach, meaning that she guides and educates you but won't dictate your healthcare plan. If you would like a collaborative approach to your healthcare and want to take a natural evidence-based path to optimal health, book a complimentary 15-minute Wellness Call. If you have no idea what a Naturopath does, then an intro call is a great first step. Perhaps you're wondering if you should go for blood tests before booking in, or maybe you just want to have a quick chat to ask about Christina's approach to supporting a certain health condition, or to see if the therapeutic relationship feels like a good fit. All great reasons to book a call! Intro calls aren't a compulsory step and you are more than welcome to book straight in for a comprehensive initial consultation too.

With the ever rising cost of living, growing your own veggies, fruits, and herbs is a great way to support your health, reduce overall costs of food, and increase the amount of phytonutrients available in your foods!
Not to mention spending time in nature is a brilliant way to care for your not only your physical health but your mental health!

As renters ourselves, I have all my fruits, veg, and herbs in pots, by adding sugar cane mulch to the top this also helps keep your plants happy and healthy, preventing water loss and stopping any fruits from rotting as they don’t lay directly on the soil!

I’d love to see your garden photos and inspirations! Please share them in the comments below 🥰♥️

Happy gardening! 🪴

Anyone who knows me knows I have great appreciation for good coffee, it’s why I spend so much on a local roaster so that I can get the very best coffee each morning.

However, certain coffee habits definitely do impact your health, here’s how to reduce the negative impacts of stimulants, such as coffee

🍳 Food before coffee - coffee on an empty stomach will fasten your bowels, can make you feel nauseous, results in a reduced appetite, it increases stomach acid production and can result in dysfunction of your gastric system and acid reflux. Make sure your breakfast contains a good amount of protein too!
🕒 Coffee timing - as a general rule, try to avoid coffee after lunch time. Coffee late in the day can affect sleep, we all know that lack of sleep has massive negative implications on health in almost every aspect.
🫨 Adrenal stress - every time you consume coffee, your adrenal glands produce cortisol, the main stress hormone, this is partly why it makes you feel energised. High caffeine intake forces your adrenal glands to overproduce the hormone, causing adrenal fatigue. Limit your coffee to no more than two a day, and try to space them apart by at least 2 hours. It takes 40 minutes for caffeine levels to reach peak in your system after consuming coffee, so if you consume one coffee after another, your body hasn’t even had time to feel the first coffee kick in.
☕️ Coffee beans over instant - one of the benefits of coffee is the levels of antioxidants, instant coffee contains less antioxidants, less caffeine, and other beneficial compounds. Another thing to note is instant coffee and pre-brewed coffees (e.g. dare iced coffee), often contain unnecessary and unhealthy additives. The other issue with instant coffee has to do with a potentially harmful chemical known as acrylamide. Instant coffee may contain up to twice as much acrylamide as fresh-roasted coffee, according to 2013 research in ‌Roczniki Panstwowego Zakladu Higieny‌.

While excessive consumption of caffeine has a negative health impacts (i.e. IBS, anxiety, adrenal fatigue, insomnia, increased heart rate), responsible consumption of caffeine has shown to reduce your risk of neurodegenerative diseases and cardiac diseases, support weight maintenance, reduced risks of T2 diabetes, endometrial cancer, and depression.

So enjoy your coffee! Just drink responsibly ☕️

If you are a Geelong local, I highly recommend Roundhouse Coffee roasters, you’ll find them at the Torquay farmers market, and Sth Geelong farmers market. It probably doesn’t surprise you I’m on a first name basis with the roaster 😅

NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)

What are the benefits?

NAC is a powerful antioxidant with many functions in the body, I personally use NAC in my clinic for a broad range of health presentations, lets discuss some of the benefits.

1. Lung Health. Research shows NAC is able to break up the disulfide bonds in mucous, essentially thinning and breaking it down so that it is easier to expel from the lungs. It has shown significant benefits for those with COPD, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis by improving lung function and sputum clearance (mucous).
2. Addictions. Multiple gold standard studies have found that NAC supplementation for addictions reduces withdrawal symptoms, improved oxidative stress markers and reduced rates of relapse.
3. Liver Health. Long term supplementation of NAC improved hepatic (liver) health, lowering oxidative stress markers, fatty liver, and decreased liver steatosis and fibrosis.
4. Autism. NAC supplementation for those with autism improved irritability scores, lethargy, and social battery with no noted side effects. NAC is also a safe treatment for children.
5. Mental Health. Studies show the use of NAC as a complimentary treatment for those with bipolar disorder, improved depression scores within 8 weeks of supplementation.
6. Reproductive Health. NAC was shown to reduce the size of existing cysts as well as prevent new cyst growth in endometriosis after 12 weeks of supplementation. Improves uterine endometrial thickness in cases of female infertility. Improved semen parameters and overall semen health, reduced FSH, and increased testosterone levels after 26 weeks of supplementation in cases of male infertility. Reduced the risk of miscarriage up to and beyond 20 weeks when combined with prenatal supplementation. And reduced hirsuitism, insulin sensitivity and menstrual regularity, and lowered free testosterone when used to treat PCOS within 6 weeks of supplementation.

These are just some of the wonderful benefits of NAC supplementation.

Vitamin D & The Southern Hemisphere. Who should be supplementing?

Vitamin D supplementation is important for individuals in the southern hemisphere, especially during certain times of the year or for specific population groups. Here are some key reasons why:

1. In the southern hemisphere, the angle of the sun's rays changes throughout the year. During winter, the sun's rays are at a lower angle, leading to reduced UVB radiation exposure. This decreased sunlight exposure can limit the body's ability to synthesize vitamin D naturally. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation becomes crucial to maintain adequate levels.
2. Individuals with darker skin tones have higher melanin levels, which can reduce the skin's ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight. This puts them at a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency, making supplementation more important for maintaining optimal levels.
3. Older adults and individuals with certain health conditions, such as osteoporosis, inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption disorders and other autoimmune conditions, may have increased vitamin D requirements. Supplementation can help ensure they meet their daily vitamin D needs and support overall health.

Dosage varies based on your personal health history, lifestyle factors and more. Getting a blood test to assess your levels is great to see where your needs are.

Whilst your levels may reach "normal levels" (aka above 50nmol/L), this factor is only taking into consideration your likelihood of developing osteoporosis, and not optimal health.

Functional levels for optimal health take into consideration all the roles and functions of Vitamin D, which is why our optimal ranges state that below 100nmol/L is considered below optimal and/or deficient depending on your results.

Let's talk Bone Broth Concentrates 🦴

I'm sure most of you by this point know that I am a big fan of bone broth

But why is Broth & Co bone broth so good?
1. Glutamine.
Bone broth contains high levels of glutamine, a nutrient required for gut integrity (keeping your gut cells tight and healthy), immune health (through gut support and fuel for immune cells), improves waste removal, as well as healthy cognition (aka brain power)
2. Protein.
Contains 2.6 grams per teaspoon of concentrate. With the rise of people eating more and more refined foods, eating less protein-rich foods, and meal skipping, having a simple and easy concentrate you can just add hot water to and drink is a big A+ in my books.
3. Grass-fed beef bones
It's made from grass-fed beef marrow bones.
The reason this is important is because grain-fed meat including organic meat contains lower levels of healthy nutrients such as omega-3. That's right grass-fed beef is BETTER than organic beef, unless it is also an organic grass-fed beef, which is very rare and very costly for the farmer.
4. Collagen.
Although I have no issue with collagen supplements I believe all nutrition should eventually come down to diet. Bone broth contains naturally high levels of collagen found in the beef marrow bones. By now everyone knows that collagen is good for gut health as well as the health of skin, hair, immunity, and cognition (because collagen is a protein it actually plays a role in every cell inside the body)

For full transparency actually sent me these products to review for them from a Naturopathic perspective, and I agreed to give my honest thoughts on their products.

Personally, I will be adding this product to my daily diet.

It is incredibly versatile, has a wonderful beef flavour and makes an incredible stock base for soups, noodles, ramen, stews, and pretty much everything I eat.

I am so impressed with the flavour and health profile of these products I love they have chosen grass-fed beef and they use naturally evaporated sea salt instead of iodized salt.

I have more products to review from Broth & Co so keep an eye out for other posts!
