Dr Jake Way Osteopath

Dr Jake Way Osteopath I am a Melbourne based, RMIT trained Osteopath working with Symmetree Osteopathy in Yarrambat, Diamond Creek and Balwyn.

Ocean Grove and Belmont based osteopath with a passion for health, fitness, sport, nutrition, mens mental and emotional health and helping you achieve your goals. With a passion for all things sport and health related, I believe that in order to achieve peak health and performance, first the mind and body need to obtain optimal function. Osteopathic philosophy revolves around viewing the body as an integrated unit as well as the intricate relationships between the structure and functions of the body. This primarily involves the musculoskeletal system that includes but is not limited to muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons and fascia. It is through this philosophy that I derived a passion for helping people achieve and maintain optimal body function whether it be aiding in strengthening or prevention of injury or the treatment of a pre existing injury/condition

I am trained in the use of traditional Osteopathic techniques such as joint manipulation, soft tissue massage, articulation and muscle energy technique amongst others and have undergone additional training in dry needling and shockwave therapy. If you wish to inquire further as to how I can help you or if you have any general questions please feel free to send a private message or call 0430068715

What is the difference between mobility and flexibility?

Flexibility generally refers to how far your joints are capable of moving or being moved. This may be passive or self movement through force.
Eg. Sitting and holding a stretch for a long period of time. This is training flexibility as you may not be teaching your body to control this motion.

Mobility often refers to your ability to actually own and control a range of motion.

Which do you think is more important?

To compare the two Imagine you’re doing a forward fold on the ground/hamstring stretch. Go to your full range of motion after a few breaths. Back off a small amount and then try to lift your leg or legs off the ground without moving your torso. If you cannot or you immediately cramp then your flexibility is greater than your mobility. This is normal to a point. However as the gap grows larger the risk of injury is likely to increase with it. Uncontrolled joint range of motion may lead to an increased amount of joint sprains and injuries as your body is entering range of motion it cannot control.

Both are important, it is context important. But if you focused on one, for me that would usually be mobility.

Through university I always believed that muscles controlled joints and it was as simple as that.

Since learning from the Postural Restoration Institute, and .effer I have learnt to look at the way the body functions in a different light.

It does still come down to muscular influences, however the orientation or position of a joint can have a significant impact on the ability of a muscle to lengthen or contract.

Consider both joint position and muscle length when you want to improve range of motion.

What are your thoughts?

The difference between an orientation and a movement or motion can be quite confusing.

Put simply a motion is the act of performing a movement Eg. Actively tilting the pelvis forwards or backwards like in a Cat Cow in Yoga.

Motion is almost always good as long as it is controlled.

An Orientation is where a bony structure moves into a range of motion and stays there. Or loses its ability to access full range of motion. Usually as an attempt to gain leverage for posture or breathing.

Eg. Your pelvis is oriented into an Anterior Pelvic Tilt. Meaning that your resting posture is not further forward than your anatomy was designed and this results in an inability to fully posterior tilt the pelvis.

Orientations are a compensation and addressing them can be a very important part of establishing good body control and becoming pain free.

Orientations are good in the Short term as they give the body what it needs. BUT in the long run can come at the cost of variability and lead to pain.

What is movement variability?

It is the many ways our body can accomplish a single task.

Try this.
Pick up something light from the ground.
See how many different ways can you move to pick it up? Squat down, bent down, lunge single leg “golfers pick up”. How many can you do? Is there fear that comes up with certain ways of moving?

Here lies a problem that has been pushed by the lift everything right community and taken too far.

I’m sure you’ve all heard the “bend from the knees” or “don’t bend your back” advice that gets thrown around regularly.

Problem is, the more rigid you are in moving the more you lose variability and the more likely you are to overload a single muscle or joint within the body.

Sure, under heavy load it’s smart to make sure you have good technique and that’s generally really good advice. But if you’re afraid to pick up a piece of paper from the ground and must squat down to pick it up. That’s probably taking that advice a bit too far.

The human body is inherently resilient and strong. It adapts to most things. Just give it a bit of variety as well and you’ll be much better off.

Pain is just a signal.

It’s a signal that something that something is damaged or about to be.

Acute pain is usually simple, generally the structure is damaged and requires a certain amount of time to heal.

In chronic pain or reoccurring acute pains it’s often the last thing to happen and the first thing to go away.
The cause is bubbling under the surface for a long time before pain presents and is often still bubbling after pain goes away.

Look for the root cause if you want to be truly healthy.

As an Osteopath I value holistic care. I like to combine manual therapy with exercises that are designed to really make a difference in the short and long term.

But being holistic to me means encapsulating the total human experience. As such is not limited to the physical body. I may also factor in lifestyle such as sleep quality, stress management and nutrition as potential parts of my management if it is required.

Having had gut issues and food intolerances myself this often forced me to look elsewhere for the cause of pain.

A bit of thought provoking information!

Surgery isn't always the best solution. Consider consulting an osteopath or another allied health professional before going under the knife!
