TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is also known as Oriental Medicine.

☯️☯️☯️

I listened to one of my favourite TCM podcasts last year (with and ), and in this conversation between Dr. Richard & husband/wife team Bora and Isaac, Isaac said something so interesting.

He said:

"Remember where you're orienting yourself... That's why I like the term Oriental Medicine because, in a sense, it's like we are re-orienting our body into the correct position. Toward health."

"Having increments of small degrees/changes, really course corrects in a large way in the future... It's beautiful we call our medicine Oriental Medicine because we're orienting ourselves."

This interview with Dr Richard Lai and reminded me how important one degree of difference can be and that we can always correct our course. Thank you, Isaac, for a lesson so resonating and profound for all in the Oriental Medicine community.

🙏🙏🙏

We have the power and wisdom to orient life in a direction that leads to our well-being.

This process for many of us takes years and years. Small changes matter. One degree at a time matters. Constantly course-correcting as we go is important.

May the beginning of 2025 encourage us all to orient our physical/mental states towards a better future.

Oriental Medicine Practitioners are there to help.

Don't have one? Get one.

Happy New Year!

❤️🥳🥰

Types of Qi

☯️☯️☯️

Traditional Chinese medicine, like much information in modern times, has become convoluted and difficult. Explaining certain theories and concepts to a wide audience ranging in TCM exposure is no easy task.

So, whether you know everything about Qi or nothing - I gotchu.

There are many different types of Qi involved in the process of our existence.

1. Original Qi (元氣- Yuán qì)

2. Food Qi (穀氣- Gǔ qì)

3. Gathering Qi (宗氣- Zōng qì)

4. True Qi (真氣- Zhēn qì)

5. Nutritive Qi (營氣- Yíng qì)

6. Defensive Qi (偉氣- Wèi qì)

All of these different types of Qi are actually one in the same, and you don't need to be a student or practitioner of Chinese medicine to get the concept.

🌊❄️🌧💧🧊☁️

The way water has the ability to take on many different forms like snow or steam or a myriad of other forms - so does Qi.

The word "Qi" itself easily escapes any kind of neat translation. The character for Qi (氣) suggests a dynamic meaning, hinting toward that which is material and immaterial at the same time.

Ancient and modern Chinese Medicine texts agree on the whole that Qi lies at the core of our vitality and of life itself and that certain types of fundamental Qi in the human body can be influenced through the transformation processes of the air we breathe and the food/drink we consume.

So what does this mean for you reading this, trying to understand 6 different types of Qi?

Well, the types of Qi in your body are relying primarily on the food and drink you consume and the air you breathe.

Start there. Start small. Start simply.

How?

Sit up straight. Take a big breath in and out. Chew your next meal slowly, without distractions. Have a sip of warm water before coffee.

For Qi's sake...

🙄🙄🙄

"The human being receives Qi from food: this enters the stomach, is transported to the Lungs...it is transformed into Qi, the refined part becomes Nutritive Qi, the coarse part becomes Defensive Qi."

Prevention Versus Cure

⚔️⚔️⚔️

This post is about waiting.

Waiting for things to heal themselves.

Waiting for doctors to find something, to name something, to do something.

This post is for those waiting for a cure.

💔💔💔

Natural therapies and modalities like Traditional Chinese Medicine will tell you the same thing.

Prevention beats Cure. Every time.

So, make your weapons BEFORE the war starts. Not after.

Don't wait for the enemy to knock on the door and then start sharpening a nearby stick. Don't wait for signs and symptoms to feel life-threatening and then ask other imperfect humans for a cure.

👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️

Get to know yourself.
Listen to your body.
Allow yourself to feel.

Drink your warm water.

Do some gentle movements often to increase blood flow and free up your spine and joints. Focus on core strength to rehabilitate injuries.

If you feel yourself slouching, fix up your posture even if only for a moment a day, especially if you are sitting at a desk or in the car.

Take deep abdominal breaths before bed to stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system. Practice sleep hygiene, less tech, and bright lights before bed.

Get your neck and back pain seen to when it feels like 5/10, not 10/10.

Cook your own food more often. Eat slowly, chew properly at every possible meal or snack. Pay attention to how varying food & drinks make you feel. Everybody is different.

Find support systems and practitioners that resonate with you. Few people are able to have one steady GP over decades, so build a team of people you trust to treat aches and pains without pills that mess around with your stomach and liver.

⚠️ Yes, most medications have to last on the pharmacy shelf and are coated and contain preservatives. That's why the list of side effects for literally any pill is so long. Regular, ongoing medication should be reviewed annually as the liver ages & changes. This is human biology and chemistry 101. Do you know how many doctors tell that to patients? Yeah, not many.

There's a lot YOU can do to intervene in small ways before wellness becomes extreme illness.

"Make weapons before the war begins. Not after."

DU26 - Rénzhōng

Restores Conciousness

⚠️ information shared here (or anywhere else by anyone) on social media does NOT replace medical care conducted under appropriate clinical conditions by a registered & insured professional ⚠️

This point is indicated for sudden loss of consciousness. Sometimes, people faint. And if you're too far away from a lollipop or an electrolyte drink (syncope, aka fainting is often about blood pressure & blood glucose levels), this point can help in an emergency while medical services are contacted.

If someone is about to faint, have them sit. If they have fainted, they will be lying. Maybe they fainted right into your arms Prince Charming style. It happens.

You just need to stay calm and apply firm pressure to DU26 until revival.

PLEASE seek further medical care for that person.

DU26 is located above the upper lip on the midline, at the junction of the upper third and lower two-thirds of the philtrum. If you need that simplified: this point lies in the tear-drop shaped crevice under your nose.

👻 Sun Si Miao Ghost Point

Commentary:

"The name of this point (Man's Middle) reflects the location of this point close to the junction of the Governing and Conception vessels and between the nose and the mouth. The Governing vessel, which governs all the Yang channels, and the nose, which receives Heavenly Qi, both correspond to Heaven (yang). The Conception vessel governs all the Yin channels, and the mouth which receives earthly sustenance, both correspond to Earth (yin). According to Chinese cosmology 'man' lies between heaven and earth, and Rénzhōng DU26 is considered to establish a connection between the two. When the harmonious interaction of yin and yang is lost and they begin to separate, there is loss of conciousness (death being the ultimate manifestation of this separation). Rénzhōng is the single most important acupuncture point to revive consciousness and re-establish Yin-Yang harmony. In any kind of fainting of loss of consciousness, Rénzhōng DU26 may be needled or strongly pressed (obliquely upwards towards the root of the nose)."

World Acupuncture Awareness Day

🌍🌎🌏

Today is important for many acupuncturists across the world.

Why?

Because on November 16th 2010, a crucial decision was made by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation).

A decision made possible thanks to Nomination File no.00425

This decision gives immense credibility and significance to the cultural contribution of Traditional Chinese Medicine and proves one thing, especially to those who would dub this modality as "voodoo/placebo/quackery"...

ACUPUNCTURE IS HERE TO STAY!

☯️☯️☯️

'As one of the unique cultural manifestations that represent the knowledge and practices
concerning nature and the universe, acupuncture and moxibustion is rooted in profound
traditional cultural details as an important component of TCM.
Based on the holistic concept of the unity between man and nature, acupuncture and
moxibustion improves the health of the human body by physically stimulating its self-regulating
function without medication.

Inclusion of acupuncture and moxibustion on the Representative
List will help other communities and people better understand the concept of nature and green
health, which will enable this traditional knowledge and practice to be a safe and effective option
for ensuring the health of relevant groups or individuals.

Inclusion of acupuncture and moxibustion on the Representative List will enhance the cultural
identity and sense of responsibility among the tradition bearers, and elevate their social status.

This will also further the transmission of the traditional knowledge and practice of different
bearers in relevant areas through organizing transmission and practice activities, establishing
training institutes and cultivating successors. Thus, this inclusion will promote respect from other
communities and peoples for this heritage.

Post-Acupuncture Care

☯️☯️☯️

Acupuncture is not dry needling.

Acupuncture is something much more powerful and fascinating with a very rich cultural history. The skilled acupuncturists of the world are capable of treating a myriad of issues; far beyond musculoskeletal pain.

Through ancient gates, now called acupuncture points, they travel into realms of creation & birth. They conjure & command bodily fluids and blood. They influence the wells, springs, streams, rivers, and seas of Qi to restore harmony to the body that needs healing.

This is a dynamic process.

All my patients hear the same sentiment after their treatment, on their way out the door.

"For the next 24 to 48 hours, take it easy. Your Qi is adjusting."

☯️☯️☯️

There is plenty of information out there on what an acupuncture session involves, but what a patient does AFTER acupuncture is just as important.

You've just had an acupuncture session. What should you do for the next 24-48 hours?

Take it easy = Life gets busy. Use this post-treatmemt time as an excuse to slow down so you can listen to your bodies messages, aches, pains, needs, and cravings. So many things our bodies are experiencing and feeling are tuned out by obligations, work, money, schedules, goals, achieve, don't stop, the economy, blah blah blah.

Sleep more if you need to = Sleep is an underrated natural healing mechanism in modern society. I'm a single mum. I get it. For some, sleep is an elusive & beautiful gift.

Have warm fluids & eat cooked foods = A living human body is WARM. Take the pressure off your metabolism and digestion by having cooked meals and warm drinks. Your Qi is too busy in healing mode to be dealing with other extremes. Save your Qi where possible. Spend it cautiously where possible. Consume gently and in moderation.

Contact your TCM Doctor if you have immediate concerns = Follow your instincts and direct questions and concerns to your Acupuncturist. This can help determine if immediate reactions post-acupuncture are expected or unusual.

☯️☯️☯️

More often than not, in my own humble clinical experience, Qi is simply adjusting. Things are changing.

Give it 24-48 hours.
