On Tuesday, I had the absolute pleasure of supporting Maddy and Caine in welcoming their little boy, Hunter into the world 🩵

I’m constantly in awe of my clients and how well they work together as a team to bring their babies into the world, same goes for Maddy and Caine. They are a powerhouse couple and it was such a joy to be with them on this day ☺️

A special birth for me also because Hunter is my tenth doula baby and he was born of the tenth day of the tenth month. Pretty special and a day I’m sure I will never forget 🫶🏼👶🏼

These statistics have struck a deep chord with me… My second birth is included in these numbers and it was one of the most traumatic experiences. Both of my babies were born via induction methods, my first was the best induction I could have hoped for. Now my second is a whole other story and ultimately what lead me to become a doula.
My midwife advocated for me more than I could have imagined and I have the utmost respect for her because of that 🤍 She cried with me as the ‘Cascade of Interventions’ were taking place before all of our eyes.
These percentages are not normal. Birth is supposed to be a physiological occurrence, women have been doing this long before hospitals were around!
Medical interventions can be life saving and absolutely necessary but after reading these statistics and knowing the interventions that took place with my second all due to a posterior baby and extended pushing time infuriate me.

We need to be educating ourselves, our daughters, our sisters, our friends. People shouldn’t be afraid of birth or feel compelled to choose an option if it makes them uncomfortable.

I have just arrived home from a beautiful getaway to Japan ☺️🇯🇵 A much needed break before a very busy second half of the year with my upcoming clients. I am working on a few things in the background and I am so excited to begin to offer these new services! 💫

What ACTUALLY is a deep latch?

A deep latch is such a fundamental part of breastfeeding! A deep latch means your baby can draw the breast tissue deeply into their mouth and suck and swallow therefore emptying and stimulating the breast to keep making breastmilk and to satisfy them!

It’s one of the MOST essential elements of breastfeeding!
Yet a baby having not a deep enough latch is one of the most prevalent issues we see as lactation consultants!

💫 Midwifery Antenatal Clinic 💫

The midwifery antenatal clinic is another option of care available to women throughout pregnancy and birth. With this type of care, when you go to the clinic for your appointments, you will be seen by the clinic midwives working that day. You may see the same person for a few appointments or you might have a different midwife every time!

Some pros for the Midwifery Antenatal Clinic:

🤍 You might get the chance to meet lots of different midwives, so more opportunity to know the midwife who will be looking after you during labour and birth

🤍 It is one of the most common models of care for women going through the public hospital system

🤍 The clinic midwives have a wealth of knowledge, so you will be able to ask as many questions as you need!

Many families I have spoken to throughout their pregnancies, were not aware that they had care provider options for their pregnancy, birth and postpartum through the public health system. Over the next couple of weeks, I will be sharing about the different models of care available to pregnant women 🤍

💫 Midwifery Group Practice 💫

Group practice is a model of care that provides continuity of care throughout pregnancy and beyond. Should you be accepted into midwifery group practice, you will be assigned a midwife, who you will see for all of your prenatal check ups, they will be your primary midwife for your birth and also provide home visits in the few weeks after birth.

This model of care is very sought after and often books out extremely quickly. If this option interests you, call the antenatal clinic soon after you find out that you are pregnant, so that you can be placed on their waiting list. Orange Hospital does not require a written GP referral to request a place in Midwifery Group Practice ☺️

🌼 Cuddled baby while mum enjoyed a coffee
