Cooking for one can be challenging...Cost of living crisis weighing us down...
Keeping a few staples on hand in the cupboard can help keep the variety without contributing to boredom.
Key tips: 1. Keep ready frozen vegetables in the freezer ready 2. don’t be afraid to have tins of beans/corn / lentils and chickpeas. Don't forget tinned salmon / tuna or chicken
3. Sweet potato and similar tubers, onions last a long time in a dark cool spot and are great for bakes / frittatas and jacket potatoes
4.Pasta and Rice are a staple ingredient in the pantry that help with a bit of flair can make a great meal. Eg: Pesto pasta with chicken / Stirfry vegetables with rice
5. Remember: With a lot of tinned products watch the salt, which can be labelled as sodium or MSG or as vegetable salt. Cut off recommendations are < 400mg per 100g or less than 120mg /100g is even better. Sometimes a good rinse can help reduce salt present on the food as a result of the brining process.
6 Fresh is great if its timely and ripe. Don’t forget fruit and vegetables in your day, about 2.5 cups per day are recommended plus 2 medium serves of fruit!

Dietitians Australia is congratulating the federal government for working together, and prioritising quality of life for older Australians.

The introduction of the new Aged Care bill into Parliament is a significant milestone for bolstering the nutrition rights of the many Australians in aged care.

It will also confirm the legislative requirement for the new standard on food and nutrition in aged care – which requires dietitians to review menu and mealtimes in residential aged care a minimum of once a year.

This is the groundswell we need to transform food and nutrition in aged care.

We’re another step closer to making malnutrition in Australian aged care history. Read more https://bit.ly/3XGjbSa

Vitamin B12

These checks are also very important if you are on medications that use more nutrients in the metabolism, eg: Corticosteroids etc.
