National Sorry Day, today May 26, marks the anniversary of the tabling of the Bringing Them Home report in 1997, which documented the experiences of the Stolen Generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families. This day serves as a reminder of the mistreatment and trauma caused by past government policies and calls for ongoing reconciliation and healing. OAMS supports conversations about history and supporting reconciliation efforts to foster positive race relations and address the health needs of the Stolen Generations.

OAMIE Bek, Cancer Health Promotion Officer recently attended the NACCHO Cancer Workforce Communities of Practice Conference.

Presentations and discussions with other ACCHO’s gave insight into what health promotion activities have worked for them and how we might be able to implement those here at OAMS e.g., drop-in clinics for screenings, bulk booking appointments for Breast Screen. Further discussions also helped to identify the barriers clients can experience with screening and cancer prevention, as well as the barriers experienced by the cancer workforce in promoting screenings, are common across the state (NSW) and recurrent nationally. Bek says a highlight of the session was "understanding the impact other ACCHO’s have achieved in the cancer space and the potential this holds for OAMS".
