Australian War Memorial London

The 60-metre-long, four-meter high granite memorial wall was built by McMurtrie & Co Stone Masons in Orange, NSW, before being transported to London for installation.

This memorial commemorates the servicemen and women who served in the First World War and Second World War by listing the names of the towns in which they were born. Superimposed on the 23,844 town names are 47 of the many battles in which they fought and made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, Australia.

Flashback Friday 56 years ago yesterday
Queen Elizabeth II visited Orange, NSW, on April 30, 1970, as part of her Australian tour, where she received a warm welcome, viewed a civic ceremony at Robertson Park, and toured the Email whitegoods factory. The Queen specifically requested to visit a factory. She toured the Email appliances factory—later Electrolux—which was a major employer in the region, watching the manufacturing of fridges and stoves. Thousands of people lined Summer Street, and a formal welcome was held at Robertson Park, where the Queen planted a tree. The Queen was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) (ABC Credit)
