Yesterday afternoon, I went for a walk at Millingtons Beach.
An enormous amount of seaweed had been washed ashore and piled up along the beach.
Having never lived by the sea, I sometimes find myself wondering about this phenomenon when I see seaweed washed up like this. What intrigues me is why, almost every time, the same type of seaweed seems to arrive all at once. Occasionally there are different varieties mixed in, but most of the time it is predominantly a single type.
For the first time, I gathered a bag full of them and brought them home. I am planning to make a fertilizer for my garden plants. I placed them in a 20-liter bucket and rinsed them several times with tap water to remove some of the salt. My intention is to leave the lid on and stir it every couple of days, hoping that in one to two months it will turn into a seaweed solution. Since the weather is getting colder, I am not sure how well the fermentation will proceed—but I suppose I will find out by trying.
