A survey of members by Massage & Myotherapy Australia found that a large majority of therapists spent 25% of their massage service time on motor accident and rehabilitation, sports injury management and rehabilitation, repetitive strain and rehabilitation, and other acute injuries or pain.

Many people believe that massage during pregnancy is not safe, particularly in the early or late stages of pregnancy. This is not correct. Anecdotal and clinical evidence show that massage is safe during pregnancy when administered by a trained professional. It provides pain relief, relaxation, and has a positive effect for baby and mother during birth.

The Ottawa guidelines indicate that massage therapy is effective at providing pain relief and improving functional status in lower back pain as well as in providing short term improvement of sub-acute and chronic lower back pain symptoms and decreased disability immediately post treatment.

✅ Studies have found massage to be effective for persistent back pain and preliminary evidence suggests that massage may reduce the cost of care after an initial course of treatment.

👉 An RCT of 262 patients aged 20 to 70 with persistent back pain showed massage to provide long-lasting benefits, reduce medication use and lower the cost of subsequent care.

✅ Anxiety, depression and lower back pain are common during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
