Exciting news!! Adaptive Minds now has two provisionally registered psychologists who are able to provide psychology services. Please see link below to view information on our new psychologists who are able to take appointments for NDIS clients and private clients. Due to provisionally registered psychologists not yet able to receive the Medicare rebate, we are offering sessions at reduced rates for private clients. All details are on our website. Appointments available NOW!

Amanda is also accepting some new clients with some appointments available from mid December. Further appointments will be available from February, 2022.

These times are certainly challenging. I know a lot of people have struggled and hope you are all receiving the support you require. There are organisations that are here to help, so please make sure you reach out if required. There is one group that I have had particular contact with that I would like to focus on in this post, our teenagers.
As a psychologist who works with teenagers regularly and has the research to back it up, I know that protective factors for teenagers include, participating in recreational activities, belonging to a group, having positive contact with healthy peers and having positive cultural experiences.
Our experiences with COVID 19 have resulted in our teenagers not being able to go to school, having team sports and individual sports suspended and having other recreational activities stopped. This has caused a negative impact on our young people’s mental health including an increase in suicidal thoughts.
Moving forward, it is vital those with the power and capacity ensure young people have the ability to participate in recreational activities to enhance their emotional well-being. I know there are multiple factors that need to be taken into account when activities return to the public in these times, however it is vital we make decisions that support and help our young people. We need to stand together and support our teenagers. Let’s ensure we do all we can to provide opportunities for young people to be connected, belong to a group and participate in activities that bring enjoyment to all!

94% of the time, the way a discussion starts determines the way it will end. Taking a pause to prepare yourselves before the conversation begins will allow you to go into it with mindful intention.

If you are needing to have a difficult conversation with a loved one or process conflict in your relationship, preparation is the best way to make sure it goes as well as possible.

Based on The Aftermath of a Fight exercise, ask yourself the following questions before you get into difficult conversations. When you and your partner are able to respond "yes" to all of these questions, processing can begin.

Routines are extremely important for children, as well as adults! With all of the changes going on in our world, it can be easy to slip back to no routine which can cause disruptive behaviours. Routines help our children be organised and give them a sense of security. With all of the changes in their world at the moment, the last thing we need to be doing is creating more stress in their lives. The article below by Dr Thomas Phelan can assist with providing more information on this topic. Adaptive Minds utilises the parenting strategies devised by Dr Phelan in 1-2-3 Magic when working with parents, children and families. If you have any further questions on this or have a parenting topic you would like further information on please let me know and I can post more information on this page. Have a safe weekend 😊
