Feeling stiff with age?

Swipe to see how massage might help you!

As we age, our bodies undergo natural changes that affect mobility, flexibility, circulation, and overall wellbeing.

Many older adults experience muscle stiffness, joint pain, and reduced range of motion, leading to decreased physical activity and increased discomfort.

Massage therapy has proven to be an effective, non-invasive method for enhancing the quality of life in older adults.

How does Massage Help?

Improving Circulation – As we age, circulation slows down, leading to cold extremities, swelling, and joint stiffness. Massage therapy stimulates blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues while reducing swelling and discomfort.

Enhancing Mobility and Flexibility – Regular massage helps loosen tight muscles, improve joint range of motion, and prevent age-related stiffness.

Reducing Pain and Inflammation – Massage can alleviate pain associated with arthritis, neuropathy, and other chronic conditions by reducing inflammation and relaxing tense muscles.

Boosting Mental Wellbeing – Seniors are at a higher risk of depression and anxiety, often due to social isolation or chronic pain. Massage therapy reduces stress hormones and increases serotonin and dopamine levels, promoting a sense of relaxation and mental clarity.

A study published in the Journal of Aging Research found that seniors who received weekly massage therapy experienced improved circulation, reduced muscle stiffness, and better overall mobility.

Another study in the Journal of Clinical Gerontology & Geriatrics reported that massage significantly reduced pain levels in elderly individuals with osteoarthritis.

The best massage techniques for older Adults;

👐 Swedish Massage – Gentle, rhythmic strokes
🌿 Aromatherapy Massage – Lavender & chamomile oils
🦶 Reflexology – Pressure points in the feet
🧠 Craniosacral Therapy – Light touch to head & spine

For older adults, massage should be seen as a regular part of a healthy lifestyle rather than just an occasional luxury.

Whether performed by a professional therapist or using simple self-massage techniques, regular massage can help seniors maintain independence, mobility, and overall wellbeing.

If you or a loved one is experiencing pain, stiffness, or reduced mobility, consider integrating massage therapy into a wellness routine.

With its proven benefits for circulation, pain relief, and relaxation, massage therapy is a safe, gentle, and effective way to support healthy aging.

Can Acupuncture Help with Tinnitus?

Swipe to find out...

Tinnitus, the perception of ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in the ears without an external source, is a frustrating and often debilitating condition.

Affecting approximately 1 in 10 Australians, tinnitus can interfere with sleep, concentration, and overall well-being.

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practice that aims to regulate the body’s energy, or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), by inserting fine, sterile needles at specific points along the body's meridians.

While modern medicine offers limited treatment options, acupuncture and Chinese medicine may provide support for some individuals experiencing tinnitus.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), tinnitus is believed to arise from imbalances in the body, particularly involving the kidney, liver, and gallbladder meridians.

By identifying the underlying pattern of disharmony, acupuncture treatments aim to restore balance and improve circulation to the ears and nervous system.

The type of tinnitus a person experiences can vary:

Sudden, high-pitched ringing may be associated with liver Qi stagnation, often linked to stress and emotional tension.

Low-frequency, constant buzzing may relate to kidney deficiency, a condition often seen in ageing or chronic fatigue.

Tinnitus with dizziness and headaches may indicate excess heat or phlegm accumulation in the body.

What does the research say?

A 2020 study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that acupuncture may help reduce the severity of tinnitus symptoms when compared to no treatment, though results vary depending on the individual (Jeon et al., 2020).

Another study in SAGE Journals suggested that acupuncture could influence neural activity in the auditory pathways, potentially reducing the perception of tinnitus over time (Cai et al., 2020).

At True Health, we take a personalised approach to treating tinnitus. Treatment may include:

Acupuncture to promote circulation and regulate nervous system function.

Electroacupuncture, which uses mild electrical stimulation to enhance treatment effects.

Herbal medicine and dietary guidance to support overall balance.

Acupuncture may offer support for some individuals with tinnitus, particularly when tailored to the underlying cause.

While it is not a guaranteed cure, it may help manage symptoms and improve overall well-being as part of a holistic approach.

If you're curious about how acupuncture can help you, we invite you to book a consultation at True Health today.

Have you heard of a CDM 🤔

Chronic Disease Management Plan 🧐

In Australia, chiropractic care can be partially covered by Medicare under specific circumstances. 😍

Patients with chronic musculoskeletal conditions may be eligible for up to five Medicare-subsidised chiropractic visits per calendar year through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan. 🤑

This requires a referral from a general practitioner (GP).

What are the steps involved?
• Consulting with a GP – Your doctor will assess whether you meet the criteria for a CDM plan.
• Receiving a referral – If approved, your GP will provide a referral for chiropractic treatment.
• Using the subsidised visits – The plan allows for up to five Medicare-funded sessions per calendar year depending on your referral, which can be spread across different allied health providers or used entirely for chiropractic care.

To qualify for Medicare-subsidised chiropractic care under a CDM plan, a patient must have a chronic medical condition that has been present for at least six months and requires ongoing management.

This could be anything from back pain to arthritis.

If you have any questions reach out, our chiropractors are more than happy to answer any questions you may have!

Can Acupuncture Help with Anxiety?

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns in Australia, affecting millions of people each year. While conventional treatments such as therapy and medication are widely used, many people seek complementary therapies like acupuncture to help manage their symptoms and restore balance to the body and mind.

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practice that aims to regulate the body’s energy, or Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), by inserting fine, sterile needles at specific points along the body's meridians. In TCM, anxiety is often associated with imbalances in the heart, liver, and kidney meridians, which can lead to symptoms such as:
• Excessive worry or overthinking
• Restlessness or difficulty sleeping
• Heart palpitations
• Digestive issues
• Muscle tension

Modern research suggests that acupuncture may help regulate the autonomic nervous system, encouraging the body to shift from a ‘fight-or-flight’ state into a relaxed, parasympathetic mode.
What Does the Research Say?
Several studies have explored the potential benefits of acupuncture for anxiety:

A 2021 systematic review published in The Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies found that acupuncture may help reduce symptoms of generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) by modulating the nervous system and increasing levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (Kwon et al., 2021).

Another study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine reported that acupuncture may reduce anxiety levels in patients undergoing medical procedures, suggesting its calming effects could extend to everyday anxiety as well (Zhou et al., 2020).

While more research is needed, acupuncture is increasingly recognised as a potential complementary therapy for anxiety, particularly for those looking to support their mental well-being naturally.

At True Health, we take a holistic approach to treating anxiety. Each patient receives a personalised treatment plan that may include:

• Acupuncture to stimulate calming points associated with relaxation and emotional balance.
• Breathing and mindfulness techniques to support nervous system regulation
• Herbal medicine and dietary guidance tailored to each individual’s constitution.

Most patients report feeling a deep sense of relaxation during and after treatment, with ongoing improvements over a series of sessions.

The Takeaway

Acupuncture may offer support for individuals experiencing anxiety, helping to promote relaxation and restore balance to the body and mind. While it is not a replacement for psychological therapy or medication, it can be a valuable complementary therapy.
If you’re looking for natural ways to manage anxiety, our team at True Health is here to help.

Struggling to Sleep?

Discover how Massage could be your natural sleep Solution!

Sleep is a fundamental aspect of health, yet millions of Australians struggle with insomnia and poor sleep quality.

While lifestyle changes, stress management, and medication are commonly used to address sleep issues, massage therapy has gained recognition as a natural and effective way to improve sleep.

Massage activates your parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s “rest and digest” mode.

When the PNS is activated, heart rate slows, muscles relax, and the body enters a state of deep rest, making it easier to fall asleep.

A study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience found that massage therapy significantly improved sleep quality in individuals suffering from chronic insomnia.

Another study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry revealed that individuals with depression and anxiety who received regular massages experienced deeper, more restorative sleep.

The key physiological effects of massage that promote better sleep include:

Lowering Cortisol Levels.
Increasing Serotonin and Melatonin Production.
Improving Circulation and Muscle Relaxation.

If you struggle with insomnia or poor sleep, integrating massage into your bedtime routine can promote long-term improvements in sleep quality.
Schedule regular evening massages to train your body to enter a relaxed state before bed.
Use self-massage techniques such as gentle neck and shoulder massages before sleeping.
Combine massage with sleep hygiene practices, including limiting screen time, reducing caffeine intake, and maintaining a consistent bedtime schedule.

Massage therapy is a safe, natural, and effective solution for improving sleep quality.

By reducing stress, relaxing muscles, and promoting serotonin and melatonin production, it can help you achieve deeper, more restorative sleep—without the need for medication.

Which Chiropractic technique is right for you?

Chiropractic care isn’t “one-size-fits-all.”

At True Health, we prioritise individualised care, ensuring that treatment is tailored to the specific needs of each patient.

The technique used in any given session is typically selected based on factors such as the patient’s age, health status, and personal preferences.

Chiropractors are trained in various methods, some of which are gentle and low-force, while others involve more traditional manual adjustments.

The most effective approach can vary from person to person, allowing for personalized treatment that best suits individual needs.

The Activator Method is a widely used instrument-assisted technique that delivers controlled, low-force impulses to specific areas of the spine or joints. This method is suitable for:

✅ Ideal for those who prefer a softer touch
✅ Great for kids and elderly patients
✅ Patients with health conditions requiring low-force

Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) involves the use of padded blocks placed under the pelvis to help the spine and nervous system return to balance naturally. This technique is beneficial for:

✅ Patients with postural imbalances.
✅ Individuals experiencing pelvic misalignment or spinal tension.
✅ Those seeking a gentle and non-invasive approach.

The Thompson Technique uses a specialised drop table, where specific sections of the table lower slightly as the chiropractor applies pressure. This technique is useful for:

✅ Patients who require a lighter, controlled adjustment.
✅ Individuals with pelvic or spinal alignment concerns.
✅ Those who prefer a method with reduced force impact.

The Diversified Technique is the most commonly used method. It involves precise hands-on spinal manipulations to improve mobility and function. This approach is often suitable for:

✅ Patients with restricted joint movement.
✅ Individuals with chronic back or neck discomfort.
✅ Those who are comfortable with traditional spinal adjustments.

Chiropractic care involves a variety of techniques, each with its own benefits.

Have you heard of Frozen Shoulder? 🦾

Chiropractic Care might Help

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion in the shoulder joint.

It typically develops gradually and can take months or even years to fully resolve. 🤨

While the exact cause is not always known, frozen shoulder often occurs after periods of immobility due to injury, surgery, or conditions like diabetes.

Chiropractic care is commonly sought for joint and mobility-related conditions, and some studies suggest that manual therapy may help improve function and pain levels in individuals with frozen shoulder.

Research published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders found that joint mobilisation techniques could enhance shoulder mobility and reduce stiffness in affected individuals (Vermeulen et al., 2011). 🏤

While treatment outcomes can vary, chiropractic care may assist by:

- Improving joint movement through specific mobilisation techniques.
- Reducing muscular tension with soft tissue therapy.
- Enhancing postural alignment to minimise strain on the shoulder joint.
- Providing exercise-based recommendations to maintain mobility between sessions.

Frozen shoulder progresses through three distinct stages:

1. Freezing Stage – Increasing pain and stiffness, making movement progressively harder. 🥶
2. Frozen Stage – Pain may lessen, but range of motion remains limited.
3. Thawing Stage – Gradual improvement in mobility as the shoulder recovers.

Some individuals with severe cases of frozen shoulder may require additional interventions such as massage, acupuncture, physiotherapy, hydrodilatation, or, in rare cases, surgery.

Consistency with home exercises and lifestyle modifications is essential for improving outcomes. 🏃

While chiropractic care is not a ‘cure’ for frozen shoulder, it may help improve joint mobility and pain management in some cases.

A tailored treatment approach, combining manual therapy, movement strategies, and rehabilitation exercises, may assist in reducing symptoms and restoring function over time.

Massage for Headaches & Migraines.

More effective than you might think.

Tension headaches and migraines are two of the most common neurological complaints, affecting millions of people worldwide.

These conditions can significantly impact daily activities, work performance, and overall quality of life.

While medication is often used for relief, many individuals seek natural, non-invasive alternatives such as massage therapy to manage symptoms and prevent recurring episodes.

Tension headaches are primarily caused by muscle tightness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Prolonged screen time, stress, and poor posture are common triggers.

On the other hand, migraines involve more complex neurological and vascular factors, often presenting with symptoms such as nausea, light sensitivity, and pulsating pain.

Massage therapy works by targeting the underlying causes of headaches and migraines, offering relief in multiple ways:

- Reduces Muscle Tension
- Improves Circulation
- Lowers Stress Levels
- Enhances Sleep Quality

A 2016 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that regular massage therapy sessions reduced migraine frequency and severity.

Another study in the American Journal of Public Health reported that individuals who received massage therapy for tension headaches experienced significant reductions in pain duration and intensity.

Which technique is right for you?

Craniosacral Therapy – A gentle technique focusing on the head and spine to release tension and improve fluid flow.

Trigger Point Therapy – Targets specific areas of muscle tightness that may be causing referred pain.

Myofascial Release – Loosens the connective tissue to improve mobility and reduce discomfort.

If you suffer from frequent headaches or migraines, exploring massage therapy as part of your wellness routine can provide a natural, effective way to reduce pain, improve circulation, and enhance overall well-being.

🎉🎉 Thank you for 25 years! 🎉🎉

Swipe to read a message from our team ! 👀

Dr Katelyn Jacka has spent the past 28 years dedicating her career to chiropractic care, and 25 of those years building True Health into the trusted practice it is today. 🤯

From entering chiropractic college straight out of school — when the program crammed two three-year degrees into five — to navigating early career challenges, Katelyn’s journey has been anything but conventional.

After working with two chiropractors in Queensland, she returned to Melbourne, where an unfortunate experience with an unethical employer pushed her to forge her own path. 🏃

At just 26, she opened True Health on 1 April 2000. Renting for the first three years, she later bought the building, even living upstairs before transforming the entire space into the thriving practice it is today. 🏤

With a keen interest in paediatrics, Katelyn pursued an additional two years of study post-graduation to earn a Diplomate in Paediatric Neurodevelopment. 👶

While children’s care is her passion, she thrives on treating a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain and new injuries to autoimmune and menopausal issues.

“I still see most patients as new toys to play with,” she jokes, reflecting her enthusiasm for problem-solving and tailored treatments. 😂

Grateful for her long-serving, passionate team, Katelyn credits True Health’s success to the people, both staff and patients, who have supported it.

“I’m lucky because I still love my job and believe our bodies are incredible, self-healing machines that sometimes just need a little help.” ❣️

With no plans to slow down (debt keeps her motivated!), Katelyn looks forward to many more years of doing what she loves — helping people feel their best.

If you have any questions reach out, our chiropractors are more than happy to answer any questions you may have!
