All risks, no matter how small, should still be accounted for in risk assessments.

After assessing the risk and determining which hazard(s) contribute most to that risk, establish, implement and maintain the most appropriate control measure(s) that are reasonably practical in the circumstances.

Risks must be identified before they can be managed.

Psychosocial risk management should be a proactive process.

The first step in risk management is identifying all reasonably expected work-related psychosocial hazards. This means looking at the workplace factors, which include workload, leadership and culture, social factors and how the work is organised.

Identifying psychosocial hazards is the first step in the risk management process.

It involves identifying the aspects of the work and situations that could potentially affect you, your workers or others at your workplace and why these may occur.

Consulting your workers will assist you in identifying any groups at risk. Whether there are additional reasonably practicable controls, you must implement them to eliminate or minimise the troubles for these workers.

Legendary companies aren’t scared to see what's under the bed - they know they must be strong and courageous to look, as they know that they can only grow when the unseen becomes seen.

Bringing transparency to areas that need attention can be scary; however, when they remain unseen, they have the potential for financial and compliant risks - and have the potential for mental harm to individuals.

Putting a light on these areas allows you to create, and action a robust strategy - ensuring your team feel safe and can thrive.

So, let’s get a torch and shine a light under the bed together.

The most inspiring and successful leaders are always self-aware, continually assessing themselves and their leadership style and determining how it influences their teams.

Leaders must be self-aware to understand the emotions of the people they lead. How can you understand anyone else if you don't know and understand yourself?

How are you controlling psychosocial hazards?

According to the Productivity Commission, nearly 1 in 5 businesses only had a basic awareness of workplace mental health. Meanwhile, RIS research has confirmed that whilst employers' awareness has increased in recent years, knowledge of workplace mental health and how to control psychosocial hazards is still evolving.

Our clients used to struggle with identifying and controlling psychosocial hazards. Stress, high staff turnover and low staff morale were all symptoms they had identified. However, they were unclear on how to fix it.

Mistake 1.
'We have an EAP (employee assistance program) and Mental Health First Aiders' is a phrase we commonly hear. Both are reactive measures, and neither allows a company to identify or control psychosocial risks.

Mistake 2.
'Bullying, sexual harassment, violence and aggression are the only psychosocial hazards we have to control'. Inappropriate behaviour is only 1 of 9 factors comprised under the definition of psychosocial hazards. Therefore if you are not identifying and controlling the other 8, you are not fulfilling your legislative requirements or ensuring a mentally safe working environment.

The client owns a medium size construction business. They were aware of a couple of issues that had arisen in the last quarter, which they had dealt with. However, going through the MindSafe results, they had not anticipated how the issues may have played out with the broader team.

The results demonstrated that the team were in a subconscious state of flight and flight, which affected their thoughts and behaviours, creating internal stress. The team were perceiving their work, relationships and workplace differently. What they found important and valued about the business had also changed from previous assessments.

Understanding human behaviour, we were able to put plans and actions in place to make the team feel 'safe'.
The best part was that the client could implement data-driven processes if an identical issue arose, enabling them to support the broader team immediately.
Our client was ecstatic,' these insights are invaluable'.

Benefits:
- Knowing how to reduce stress for the team when issues arise, ensuring the team

feels mentally safe:
- The team feels heard and supported, building loyalty
- Using Data, they were able to improve their positive workplace cultures.
- Understanding trends allows the company to be more proactive in helping their team's mental health

Are you mismarketing Mental Health for men, preventing them from getting their support?

Most men express their feelings and even mental health problems differently. They often cover these up by suspicious actions like aggression, alcohol or drug abuse, gambling, addiction, or being out of touch.

Having a healthy relationship can help them cope in difficult situations and express themselves.
