Dr Alison Chiu, PhD, FRANZCO, FWCRS, is a leading cataract and refractive eye surgeon based in Sydney. She has extensive expertise in laser vision correction procedures such as LASIK, SMILE (including SMILE Pro), and PRK, as well as ICL surgery (implantable contact lenses) for patients with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Dr Chiu also performs advanced microincision cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange, offering a wide range of premium intraocular lens (IOL) options to deliver highly customised, precise visual outcomes for her patients.

My talk wasn’t about lasers or cataract lenses this time - it was about something much more common (and often overlooked): dry eye disease 👀💧
Dry eye affects millions of people and can cause grittiness, watery eyes, intermittent blurred vision, irritation, and more. But it’s also incredibly important when it comes to surgical outcomes: 👉 A healthy tear film = accurate measurements for cataract & refractive surgery 👉 Treated dry eye = clearer vision and happier patients after surgery
By working together with GPs at the frontline of care, we can make sure patients get help earlier - and set them up for the best possible results if they ever need eye surgery in the future.

Swapped rings for a spiral

Feeling fortunate to work with the new Galaxy IOL from .global , the world’s first intraocular lens designed using artificial intelligence. This next-generation trifocal lens features a unique non-diffractive spiral optic, developed by an AI engine trained on patient outcomes. The design aims to provide a smooth, continuous range of vision across all distances, with , withoffering patients clearer, brighter vision due to 0% light loss, while minimising visual disturbances like halos and glare. Early results are looking stellar 🌌

Back where it all began — Sydney Eye Hospital.
From trainee to trainer, it’s a full circle moment standing at the same fountain I once rushed past between cases.

Now, I’m back to teach the next generation of eye surgeons — sharing what I’ve learned in refractive laser surgery, ICL (implantable contact lens) surgery, and complex cataract cases.

Teaching isn’t just something I do — it’s how we raise the standard for everyone. And yes, it’s how I stay sharp too.
