Rapid Fire Questions
Cassie Eckard
What brought you to this field?
I've always had a fascination with human behaviour and the amazing capacities of the human brain.
When I was 14, I read an article about trauma among child soldiers who were abducted from their family, and conscripted into various military operations. When these children were eventually rescued and returned to their families, they were unable to reintegrate into their family systems. They would have nightmares, flashbacks and even run away from their families and return to their abusers. I read about the child psychologists who worked with these children and their families in their recovery. From there I became passionate about helping people recover from pain and suffering.
What are your special interest within your scope of practice?
I have a special interest in trauma and more specifically Eye Movement Desensitisation Processing (EMDR) Therapy. This therapy helps clients process traumatic or distressing memories and reduce the emotional impact of these events. It involves connecting trauma memories with body sensations and core beliefs. At the same time, it uses the brain's natural healing capacity to help clients connect to more adaptive information. I love how holistic EMDR is and the various ways it can be used.
In addition to this, I love working with Neurodivergent clients. I use Neurodiversity affirming approaches to help clients develop a positive identity. I am super passionate about all the different ways our brains can work, and encourage my clients to support their sensory, communication and movement needs in sessions.
What do you do for yourself to fill your cup?
I love being out in nature and spending time with my animals. I have a horse who I enjoy trail riding out in the state forest or along the Warburton Rail Trail. I also have a dog (Keavy), a soft coated Wheaton Terrier who always comes on adventures with me.
