DID YOU KNOW...

Thursday morning Ashtanga Led has an added element?
Each week, as Phyo leads you through the Primary series, he chooses a pose or element of the practice to focus on and improve. For example, the technique of Chaturanga, or jump-throughs. He’ll show you tips and ways to build up to the poses individually, so your practice as a whole improves. Students report their practice improving from going to this class.
This class is a must do for all students practicing Vinyasa or Ashtanga. All welcome, whether you’re just beginning your Ashtanga/Vinyasa journey, or are a seasoned practitioner.
Phyo would love to share his passion for this transformative practice with you.

🤗 Community is key to everything we do here at GCYC… Yoga is so much more than a physical practice but moves us towards a way of life that benefits us as individuals, our families, our neighbours, and all of humanity. It helps us to heal on every level so we can walk in this world more consciously, with a lighter footprint and a more meaningful experience of being human. Practicing alongside each other as a Sangha (spiritual community) offers us a place to connect, grow and expand. It offers a sanctuary to ‘be’, and the support of others with the shared experience of commitment to a deeper path. And, when we need it, the opportunity for self-responsibility through accountability, as we journey through our asana practice, and this life 🤗

We also want to take this opportunity to remind you of our hardship options. This is one way we can support our community during challenging times. It helps us too!! We’d much rather see you on the mat than not! It creates a great energy, and improves synergy. Synergy is when the efforts of the many/whole raises up all of the individuals within. The more involved, the greater possibilities for Synergy…

Support is offered on a sliding scale according to your unique circumstance - simply call Laura/Clare in the office on 5534 2883 to discuss, message/email, or set up a time to pop in.

Through community, we raise each other up. We look forward to seeing you on the mat soon 🙏💛

Retreat curious? Here are just some of the reasons why our Springbrook retreats are an amazing opportunity for rest, replenishment and resetting… 🌱

It’s so important to step out of life sometimes. We can’t always manage to do it for ourselves on a daily basis, and that’s why we’ve designed our retreats to prioritize space and maximize connection with the body, mind, spirit, community and nature 🍃

Theres still spots available at our Summer Retreat, so if a pre-Christmas break is calling, you’ll be amazed at the shifts towards bliss that can occur with just an extended weekend of conscious time out 🌿

If interested in attending the upcoming retreat from Friday 5th Dec to Sunday 7th Dec, let the office know and we can send you more info about the accommodation, food, activities and pricing 💚

This photo is precious to me 🙏💗✨

It captures my core Sangha, my spiritual family.
We have been through so many different experiences together, some of us together for almost 30years…
The difference between regular friendship/family is our common bond of Yoga…
We help each other along the path of Yoga, we help each other utilise the tools of Yoga, and we help each other meet life’s challenges and turn them into growth using these tools.

And what is Yoga? Any tool/practice (meditation, asana, philosophy, diet, chant) that helps to free us from conditioned thinking, get to know and live from our true abiding state, helps us integrate life experiences and come back to practice when we get distracted, helps us help others, to live in harmony with our selves/others/the Divine and Nature, and to act for the greater good. It is also the peaceful, clear, equanimous, blissful state that is the fruit of that path.
Yoga is a broad term with deep roots. For me it covers almost all spiritual practice including Buddhism, Zen (who share the same roots) and even Abraham’s faiths (who share similar values).

Our broader yoga community is also Sangha. A community of people drawn to raising consciousness, greater good for all and the synergy of like minded beings that raises us all up beyond what we can do on our own.

When in at the centre next time, if you feel like it, a simple “Namaste” (with hands in prayer position 🙏) honours that connection to each other. As well as being a simple greeting, it honours the Divine within each of us that flows through us and connects us all.✨🙏✨
For the more practical/science minded, it is a nod to the fact we are all made up of the same atoms, living in the same unified field - we are one ✨🙏✨

While our Restore classes focus on filling up the tank and replenishing energy, they offer so much more than that 🪷

With slower pace and quiet mood, you have a chance to step back from the world for a short time, and experience respite from the noise and haste*. It’s almost like a micro retreat once a week. 🪷

This naturally lends itself to guiding you inwards and connecting to your Self, your guidance and your intuition. Regularly building that bond with the inner helps to stay centred, calm and responsive when life gets challenging… 🪷

On a practical level, this style of practice is essential to increasing vagal tone, reducing stress and improving many body systems that are impacted by a stressful environment. 🪷

Knowledge of these asanas also lets you modify and adapt in regular classes on those days you might feel tired, overwhelmed, are recovering from illness or injury or are on your Kali cycle 🪷

It’s impossible to estimate how valuable this style of practice is and the empowering benefits of better health, clarity, energy and connection 🪷

Every Friday 4pm with the gentle and wise 🪷🧘‍♀️🪷

Need a nervous system reset?
One of the key methods talked about these days is to improve vagal tone, and one of the easiest ways to improve vagal tone is to hum....
Or even better, to chant OM as the yogis have been doing for thousands of years. (I love it when ancient blends with modern!)

Why is it important?
As more became known about the nervous system - the old fight or fight response stress response model expanded to include "freeze" - like a deer in the headlights. However, recent research has shone a light on a fourth response (or non response) which is vagal tone. This is when you stay calm and centred, even when in the midst of stress (sound familiar?) We all know a certain amount of stress (external activating factors) is healthy and needed to feel motivated and inspired, however these days, we are bombarded with just too much and that becomes toxic stress. We are no longer motivated but enervated, overwhelmed rather than inspired.

The vagus nerve is a key part of the parasympathetic nervous system that activates the rest and digest functions in the body. Vagal tone is how well the vagus nerve functions in response to stress. High vagal tone indicates better resilience, mood, cardiovascular function and the ability to stay steady and clear headed even under duress. Poor vagal tone is associated with increased stress responses and a reduced capacity to meet challenges.

When we are able to stay calm and steady, even under duress - our body functions better, we can think more clearly and come up with better solutions, we don't release stress hormones into the bloodstream and our digestion continues to function well. We are not as reactive, and are able to respond more effectively to any circumstance. We are able to take action that's needed without burning out. We also simply feel much better. This state equates to the state of Yoga balance. We are centred, grounded but ready to respond. We feel calm and more open to joy and gratitude, and can meet challenges more easily when they arrive. Living in this state leads to more skilful living - one of the definitions of Yoga - and accumulates to provide a solid ground that holds us no matter what is going on.

Another way to improve vagal tone is through pranayama (intelligent breath work). Abdominal breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system and helps us to calm down. One of the simplest ways is to get comfortable sitting upright with lifted spine and chin slightly down: find your natural breath and as you slowly inhale count how long it takes to easily and naturally breath in, then exhale for twice as long. Even a few breaths can make a difference and have you naturally belly breathing in no time.

Nadi shodhana is another powerful nervous system regulator (for another post).

Remember, after any breath work/nervous system work, spend at least a few minutes in Savasana/sitting then Savasana to let the nerves settle and regulate, and to integrate the effects of the Pranayama. The more breathwork/humming/om you do, the longer in sitting and/or Savasana.
This is extremely important to get the full benefit of the practice and to avoid overstimulating the nervous system.

It only takes a short time a day to put these practices in place - at the end of asana practice, on their own, or you can chant "OM" any time, even doing the dishes, doing housework or going for a walk. At least 5 minutes pranayama and at least a few minutes humming/chanting when you can. OM can also be chanted mentally if in a public space!!

We can't always change our circumstances, but we can change how we respond to them, and this is Yoga.

Here's to feeling steadier and more resilient in the face of whatever life brings.
