Yoga teaches that we are all one, that we are not separate from each other.
We are pure, eternal consciousness (Atman/Self).

Our tendency to forget this (avidya) is at the heart of all suffering.
When we identify with ego (asmita) it causes separation and enmity.
Yoga (and other) practices teach us to come back to the Self.

The events of the weekend are what happens when we forget.
As are all forms of violence, war, genocide, oppression and material greed.

We pray that all may remember their true divine nature and bring about an end to these violent actions.
We grieve with all those effected.
We give thanks for those who act with brave hearts and compassion to show us the good that still exists.
We remember those still suffering globally as a result of this constant forgetting.
We work towards a day when we may all look at each other and remember, and see ourselves as one.

Last weekend’s weekend yoga retreat was exactly the reset I needed… 🙏😌

Friday could not have rolled around soon enough, and as I drove the winding rainforest roads up the mountain to Springbrook National Park, I felt my energy shift and my shoulders start to drop 🌲🍃

Each day we moved our bodies and calmed our minds with meditation and yoga. Kath, as always, found the perfect balance of nurturing and energizing us. Jade cracked our hearts open with her incredible song, and Glenn & Mark help us to tune in and nurture our spirits with their didgeridoo sound healing session. And the FOOD! Simple yet so flavorsome and nourishing…

It was the best decision I made for myself to escape the heat and the pre-Christmas craziness, just 45 minutes but a whole world away, to have that time to decompress and absorb the energy of the natural surroundings… I highly recommend future GCYC retreats for anyone who could benefit from some spaciousness in their life (probably all of us). Thank you to everyone who came along, your presence truly made it extra special 💚💚💚

Today we celebrate the birth of Krishnamacarya - but why?

Krishnamacarya was the teacher of our teachers.
He was the teacher of Pattabhi, Iyengar, Desikachar and Indra Devi - four of the most potent teachers of the modern yoga era.
He is considered to be one of the founding fathers of modern Yoga.

More importantly, he is part of our lineage (sampradaya) and yours.
Pattabhi and Iyengar were gurus to our GCYC teachers’ teachers.
They trained under these amazing beings and shared that wisdom with our teachers, who in turn did their training with them.

Sampradaya means we don’t have to begin again over and over.
The foundations have been laid, the path has been travelled and we can build on what has gone before us.
Like Krishnamacarya did with the wisdom gained from his teacher Ram Mohan Brahmacari.

The first two lines of the Ashtanga Opening Chant express it well:

I praise the lotus-feet of my teachers,
who show [the method of] becoming aware of the joy in my own self

So we celebrate the day that this divine soul came into being, and lit a candle so bright, the light has shone for almost 150years.

Why do some people bow before they enter the Yoga Room or begin their practice? 🪷🙏🪷

There are many reasons, here are a few…

Some people feel a connection to a guru, or higher consciousness; and bow to call in that guidance before stepping into the room 🪷

Others do it out of respect for a sacred space. This is not a place for the mundane, but for transformation and connection to that higher source of wisdom (whatever that means to you - whether the Divine, the Universal or simply the nervous system calming enough to think more clearly). ✨

There is also the recognition of the higher intentions of Yoga; to rediscover we are all one. Whether a concept, or the physical reality of sharing the same atoms and same field of consciousness - what effects one of us, effects us all; and what we contribute to the collective experience effects the whole. We indicate our intention to contribute something for the greater good of all - peace, love, compassion, clarity etc.
The two hands coming together before the heart represent union of the opposites to become whole. They also signify “you and I, are one”; the individual (I) and the Divine/Universal are one; here in the heart space, we are one 🙏💗

It can be a signal that we are willing to lay down our ego before our heart... Rather than lead with thoughts, wants, desires - we are willing to set those aside and be guided by something greater than ourselves... the teacher who may have more experience, our body and its feedback, our breath, the laws of nature, universal awareness, the present moment, God/guru, the synergy of the space and elements, love and compassion. We are willing to allow the right way to be revealed, rather than impose our will based on limited understanding or conditioned thinking. 🙌

Sometimes it’s to draw a line between the daily, often distracting and chaotic busyness of our lives and simply state “I am here. Now.” Atha Yoga anushasanam - Now, the practice of Yoga begins 🧘‍♀️💛🧘🏽
