“I just want to get rid of my nail!”

That’s the comment we get from many of our patients who have battled years of painful ingrown toenails and stubborn fungal nail infections.

We discuss the option of a Total Nail Avulsion procedure for those wanting to effectively remove the problem nail and relieve their discomfort.
For some cases, a chemical agent can be applied to prevent the regrowth of the nail, ensuring a long term pain-relief solution.

National Diabetes Week 14-20 July 2024.

The IDF Diabetes Atlas provides the latest figures, information and projections on the global impact of diabetes.

- 537 million adults (1 in 10) were living with diabetes in 2021. This number is expected rise to 643 million by 2030 and 783 million by 2045.

- Almost 1 in 2 adults (44%) with diabetes remain undiagnosed (240 million). The majority have type 2 diabetes.

- More than 3 in 4 people with diabetes live in low and middle-income countries.

- 541 million adults are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

- More than 1.2 million children and adolescents (0-19 years) live with type 1 diabetes

- Diabetes caused 6.7 million deaths in 2021.

- Diabetes was responsible for at least $966 billion in health expenditure in 2021 – 9% of the global total spent on healthcare.

- 1 in 6 live births (21 million) are affected by high blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) in pregnancy.

It has been a busy month of ingrown toenails and fungal infection at our clinic, and we are proud of the hard work our team has put in to help our patients walk pain-free again!

These nail removal procedures, known as total nail avulsions, have been crucial in providing relief and promoting healing for our patients. Severe ingrown toenails and persistent fungal infections can cause significant pain and discomfort, and over-the-counter medications are often ineffective for chronic cases.

Total Nail Avulsion surgery, is a surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia by a trained podiatrist to remove the entire nail plate.

This procedure is typically done to remove a damaged or infected nail, or to address certain medical conditions such as ingrown toenails or onychomycosis (a fungal infection of the nail).

Ingrown toenails can occur in conjunction with fungal nail infections. This may cause nail deformity such as nail thickening and increased curvature of the nail, leading to additional pain in the corners and swelling on the nail bed.
