Dear friend

We didn’t learn friendship the easy way.
We learned to survive first.
To hide parts of ourselves.
To expect that trust would eventually be broken.

We didn’t learn connection in safe, steady ways. We learned to read the room. To hide what was really going on. To keep the peace. To survive.

So when we go quiet sometimes…
or hold back, or take things personally…
it hurts, but we understand.

Because it’s not this moment. It’s something older, and the aftermath still echoes through our lives.

In the relationships that didn’t hold. In the divorces we never planned. In the children who carry pieces of our nervous systems in their own small bodies. In the quiet ache of “I tried my best… and it still didn’t work.”

And still… we’re here. Still choosing connection.

If you also have that friend … ⬇️

Your brilliant body has an organised way in which it recovers from stress.

The most challenging stage of this process is not getting through the second stage of Recovery ⬇️ when you feel drained, exhausted or even very sick… it is the when the Sympathetic system comes back online to mobilise and remove whatever excess stress is still present, from your brain.

This is the stage you want to do exactly what you shouldn’t: say yes when it’s a no, reach out to the very person who hurt you, believe the old beliefs and thoughts that suddenly grip you and put you back into overwhelm again.

Stages 4 & 5 ⬇️ is a PIVOTAL part of your recovery from stress - and this is when it is necessary for you to accept that it may feel like a relapse… but it isn’t.

The familiar discomfort is a biological part of your recovery phase.

Take it extra easy, stay under a blanket for days if you must, sleep, watch your favourite shows, reach out to your therapist or trusted friend, drink lots of water and eat nourishing food… ALLOW your body to return to autonomic balance where Sympathetic and Parasympathetic are in homeostasis again.

Your body is asking for something NEW!

This is a tremendous theme right now…

A demanding pull to step up and be more authentic… to stop overriding what you’re actually feeling.

But when your body is used to surviving and DOING, thriving and BEING can feel very l unfamiliar… even unsafe.

Nothing is going wrong.

Your system is learning something new.

Read my latest blog on making sense of adrenaline surges, simple regulation tools, and the importance of letting go of resistance in a time of transformation.

The body is an interconnected ecosystem.

Changes in one system - like declining oestrogen during perimenopause - can ripple through digestion, microbial balance, and mental health.

During perimenopause and menopause, declining oestrogen and shifts in the microbiome can lead to vaginal dryness, discomfort, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), digestive changes, and increased anxiety or panic episodes.

By understanding and supporting the dorsal vagal circuit, gut microbiome, and vaginal microbiome, you can:

🫶🏼Reduce anxiety and panic related to digestive or hormonal shifts,

🫶🏼Support smoother digestion and less bloating,

🫶🏼Maintain healthier vaginal ecosystems,

🫶🏼Navigate perimenopause and menopause with more comfort, clarity, and confidence.

Changing who you actually are to feel safe connection is not a sign of calm or composure.

If you find yourself saying “yes” when you mean “no”, feeling shut down but still showing up, smiling yet carrying quiet exhaustion and resentment beneath the surface, you may be living in the freeze/fawn state.

Functional freeze/fawn isn’t dysfunction - it’s adaptation. And it can shift.

In this blog, I explore how the vagus nerve shapes this pattern, and how we gently move from functional survival into true regulation.

Changing who you actually are to feel safe connection, is not a sign of calm or composure - quite the opposite.

There is a part of your brain whose entire job is to keep the story of you alive.

Neuroscience calls it the Default Mode Network – the DMN.

It’s the network that narrates your life. It reflects, compares, replays, predicts.
It asks:

What do they think of me?
Am I doing this right?
What does this mean about who I am?

It is, quite literally, the keeper of your identity. And while that sounds essential – it is – it’s also where many people get stuck. Because when this network becomes overactive, the mind turns inward in a way that isn’t supportive… it becomes rumination.

The loop.
The overthinking.
The constant self-referencing.

And this is where we often see anxiety and depression begin to take shape.

The moment it goes quiet

What’s fascinating – and deeply important – is what happens when the DMN softens.

Not shuts down completely.
Not disappears.
Just… quiets.

People don’t report losing themselves.

They report finding something else.

A sense of clarity,
A feeling of relief,
A deep, grounded presence,
A break from the constant mental noise.

It’s not that the mind stops working. It’s that it stops gripping. And in that space, something shifts.

Long before neuroscience gave it a name, this experience was already known. In spiritual traditions, it’s often referred to as ego dissolution – or more dramatically, ego death.

But let’s soften that language a little. Nothing is dying. What’s happening is that the tight hold of identity loosens.

The “I” that is constantly evaluating, defending, proving… steps back.

And what remains is often described as:

Connection,
Insight,
Emotional release,
A sense of being part of something larger.

In Restore terms, this is not about losing yourself. It’s about coming out of survival patterns tied to identity … read more 😘

You can’t eliminate your sense of self. You need flexibility in it.
