Rotary Club of Pambula

Rotary Club of Pambula We are an active group of almost 40 men and women, committed to community service within Australia and overseas, while at the same time having fun.

Rotary is a global network of more than 1.2 million people who take action to create lasting change Our Rotary Club was chartered in 1990 on the 25th August. The sponsor club was the Rotary Club of Merimbula Inc. Our club is known as “the little club with big heart” as we have carried out some very big projects over the last 10 years such as the Pambula Skate Park and the multi-million dollar Pamb

ula Swimming Complex and helping build and organise Carer’s Accommodation at the new South East Regional Hospital. With almost 40 members like hands on projects which seems to have attracted a lot of members. We recently took over the maintenance of the Pambula Village roundabout, re invigorating it with new plants, removal of old ones and making it safer for both pedestrians and car users. Our membership is very close to 50-50 male-female which we are very proud of.

Pambula Rotary is very pleased to support Connecting Communities Australia with their ongoing work to assist property owners in Kiah who are still living with the impact of the Black Summer Bushfires. Here's President Daryl Dobson & Treasurer Lynne Koerbin presenting a donation of $1,000 to CCA CEO Glenn Price. Glenn and his team of volunteers will be back next month to help property owners with fencing and w**d control ... if you have some time to volunteer we'd love you to get in touch. 🎉

This is awesome news! Pambula Rotary have a longstanding connection with Timor Leste ... including sending a team to Timor in 2012 as part of a RAWCS project to assist with the roll out of malaria eradication initiatives. It was an amazing trip and a huge privilege to contribute in a small way to this fabulous outcome 🥰

Timor-Leste has officially been certified malaria-free by the World Health Organisation!

RAWCS is proud to have played a role in this incredible milestone through the Australian Rotary Against Malaria (ARAM) program.

Thanks to the dedication of local health leaders and international collaboration, Timor-Leste has now recorded three consecutive years of zero indigenous malaria cases—a historic achievement for a tropical, low-income nation.

Malaria remains one of the world’s deadliest diseases, yet this shows what's possible when we come together to fight back.

👉 Join us as we continue working toward a malaria-free world. Every step counts.

Coins dropped into our market wells helps Pambula Rotary to End Polio Now

Paul Alexander, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 78, was one of the last people in the world to live inside an iron lung—a towering, tube-like machine that kept him alive for over 70 years. At just six years old, Paul contracted polio during the devastating 1952 outbreak in Texas. The virus paralyzed him from the neck down and left him unable to breathe on his own. Doctors placed him in an iron lung, telling his parents he might not survive the night. But Paul defied the odds, beginning a lifelong journey of survival within the humming, steel confines of the machine that would become both his prison and protector.

Despite his physical limitations, Paul lived a life of astonishing courage and determination. Using a plastic stick held in his mouth, he taught himself to write, eventually earning a law degree and becoming a licensed attorney. He also authored a memoir, *Three Minutes for a Dog*, typing each word painstakingly with his mouth. Paul never allowed his condition to define his worth. Instead, he became a symbol of resilience, dignity, and the power of the human spirit. Friends and followers from around the world drew inspiration from his story and admired his sharp mind, wit, and unwavering strength.

Paul’s passing marks not just the end of a life, but the closing of a chapter in medical and human history. His decades spent inside an iron lung are a sobering reminder of the devastating reach of polio, and the miracle of modern vaccines. But beyond the machine and the diagnosis, Paul Alexander leaves behind a legacy of perseverance and purpose. His life—brave, difficult, and deeply meaningful—touched thousands, reminding us all that even within the harshest limits, hope, intellect, and humanity can flourish.

Did you know that Neil Armstrong, the very first man to step foot on the moon, was a proud member of Rotary? It’s fascinating to think that someone who made history in space also contributed to community service on Earth!

One of our hard working Rotarians.

🙌Appreciation Post – Thank You, Stephen Targett !!
Stephen Targett joined AHBIC as Chair in June 2022—just ten days before the detection of varroa in New South Wales. What followed was an incredibly challenging time for the Australian beekeeping industry, and Stephen stepped up with selfless dedication, despite having retired, to give back to the industry that had given him so much.
Thrown into a baptism of fire, Stephen provided calm, steady leadership through the most significant biosecurity crisis our industry has faced. He chaired numerous spirited member-body meetings, brought people together, and helped navigate complex decisions with wisdom, humility, and care.
Perhaps most importantly, Stephen played a pivotal role in holding AHBIC together during this time of change, all while nurturing and guiding the next generation of industry leaders.
We thank Stephen for his countless hours of service over the past three years, and we sincerely wish him all the best for a more peaceful, well-earned and more realistic retirement this time!

Our Blue Tree Painting project has been deferred for today.
So sorry to all our volunteers and supporters ... but a last minute 'not in our backyard' protest from a couple of local Pambula Beach residents has put a stop to our su***de prevention initiative today. We'll keep the conversation going though with more community consultation .... we know there is huge support for community driven initiatives that promote mental health and support people impacted by the tragedy of su***de. If you support the initiative make sure you get involved in the next part of this conversion.

An exciting new project for the Club ... come along .... help paint the tree blue, grab a snag and join the conversation...

Well you will see Rotarians working around the roundabout in Pambula tomorrow morning, sprucing up the plants, w**ding, mulching and watering. This is a regular occurrence to continually beautify this part of our town . Some extra work will be happening due to a truck cutting the roundabout and squashing the metal edge and a group of plants. So if you have a spare 30 minutes, come down this Sunday at 9am, met up with so.e great people and help do a bit for the community. Dave
