NAIDOC Week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year marks 50 years of honoring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture and resilience and embraces the theme - The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.

In line with this year's theme, we look forward to further deepening relationships with our First Nations communities as we commence the journey to develop BHN's inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan.

🌈 July is Disability Pride Month! 💪✨

At BHN, we're proud to be a Rainbow Tick accredited organisation supporting people of all abilities. This month, we raise the Disability Pride Flag and stand in solidarity with people living with disability — celebrating identity, promoting awareness, and encouraging self-love and acceptance.

Did you know each colour on the flag has a unique meaning?

🟩 Green – Sensory disabilities
🟦 Blue – Emotional, psychological & psychiatric disabilities
⚪ White – Invisible & undiagnosed disabilities
🟨 Yellow – Neurodiversity & developmental disabilities
🟥 Red – Physical disabilities
⬛ Black – Those we've lost to violence, abuse & neglect.

Let’s come together to celebrate the strength, diversity and pride of the disability community — not just in July, but every day. 💛♿️

Last Friday, BHN was honoured to host a table of staff at the annual Derrimut Weelam Gathering Place 2025 NAIDOC Dinner.

The night began with a beautiful smoking ceremony, followed by warm speeches, delicious food, and stunning performances by Djirra Djirra (meaning W***y Wagtail in Woiwurrung) - a women’s dance group of Wurundjeri descendants.

Our CEO, Andrea McLeod, accepted a certificate of appreciation and a painting by Kamilaroi artist, Marissa Mulcahy on behalf of BHN, recognising our sponsorship of the event and commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this night one to remember, embodying the spirit of this year’s theme: Strength, Vision & Honouring our Legacy to Inspire Change.

Maria joined Better Health Network’s Meaningful Connections program in July 2024 seeking social visits and companionship. That’s how volunteer Susie met Maria and her husband, Gunter.

Matched due to shared interests, their connection was immediate.✨ Over cups of tea, they share stories and laughter and even enjoy Gunter’s musical performances. Susie’s visits give Gunter a break while Maria enjoys warm, engaging company.

Susie encourages others to volunteer🙌, noting the deep friendships formed and the joy of giving back. 🤝💖

👏 A big shout-out to our incredible Health Promotion team for hosting a hugely successful event last week: Promoting Gender Equity in the Early Years!

Nearly 100 professionals from the early childhood sector came together to connect, learn, and reflect on the vital role of gender equity and respectful relationships in shaping young minds.

This work is a powerful step toward building a future free from discrimination and violence - starting where it matters most: the early years. 💛🌱

Ted never imagined he’d enjoy a program like Meaningful Connections, but now he eagerly looks forward to weekly visits from volunteer Eve and her dog, Spencer. 🐶 Nowadays, Spencer even has his own lounge chair beside Ted! Meaningful Connections matches a volunteer visitor with a lonely or isolated person living in an aged care facility or at home. Ted says the visits are '"terrific,” and Spencer never misses a chance for a pat 💕

Today, we take a moment to reflect on the years and years our volunteers have moved our community members. In fact, this year, we are celebrating 50 years of our Community Transport Program ❤️

This program helps our clients get from A to B for appointments, but it’s so much more than that. It’s the little moments, the chats in between ‘hellos’ and ‘goodbyes’ that create that social connection.

For every single volunteer and client who has been part of this program for the last 50 years, we thank you! Here’s just a couple of snaps we could find from over the years 🙌

In 2024 Better Health Network’s Health Promotion team commissioned researcher Jo Farmer to lead a project engaging both our community and staff to explore current practices around size inclusive healthcare. This report captures stories, evidence and recommendations to guide BHN moving forward.

Our Health Promotion team are excited to share the findings at the 11th Annual International Weight Stigma Conference in July.
