Optometry in Parkes
Part 5
Another first! Of course, doing his PhD led to him becoming the first optometrist from Parkes to be the lead author of published research papers in peer-reviewed journals published on PubMed. To be indexed in PubMed, a journal needs to meet specific criteria related to its content, quality, and adherence to publishing standards, and so not all journals are found here. (He learned this the hard way when one paper was published in a journal not found on PubMed!).
His exposure to teaching and students at the University of Canberra (UC) helped him publish further papers as a post-doctoral researcher attached to the John Curtin School of Medical Research at ANU. These papers have provided evidence-based practice treatment protocols now being taught at UC as well as being used by clinicians in clinical practice all over the world.
As a reviewer of one of his papers said: β I enjoyed reading this clear, interesting description of an issue that has major bearing on the daily clinical care of millions of glaucoma patients and of tens (or hundreds) of millions of people undergoing routine eye examinations around the world.β Not bad for a little old optometrist in Parkes! If you want to see an optometrist who writes the papers rather than just reads them (!), come in and see Dr John Pearce Optometrist.
