The truth about optometry in Parkes First of the firsts!

Part 2

In 2017, Dr John became the first optometrist from Parkes to be awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree (from the Australian National University), which is considered the highest postgraduate achievement you can earn and is at Level 10 on the Australian Qualifications Framework criteria. . Apart from also being awarded the title of “Doctor” as a result, it was nice to be able to demonstrate to other healthcare professionals that living and working in the country is no barrier to being able to undertake and achieve the highest levels of study.
His thesis was titled “Variability in perimetry and optical coherence tomography in glaucoma."” Which of course is massively relevant to his clinical practice in Parkes and greatly beneficial to his patients! Perhaps more importantly, Dr John realized that his knowledge of how to conduct research combined with his experiences in clinical practice could be used to improve clinical practice protocols, and many of his post-doctoral research papers have done just this. This clinical and research experience has also led to changes in how certain treatments are now taught at the University of Canberra, which shows that even a little old optometrist in the Central West of NSW can influence the world!

Part 1

First things first! Some of my patients tell me that they have been told I will be retiring soon. This is blatantly untrue and they have been lied to. I have no intention of retiring anytime soon (barring illness or accident!), and to prove it, we have now purchased a new Optical Coherence Tomograph machine, the machine that revolutionized the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and macula pathology around the world. My practice in Parkes ties in beautifully with work at the University of Canberra and I hope to continue doing both for some time to come.
Of course, if you would like me to retire, all donations would be gratefully accepted!

Juleye is National Eye Health Awareness month, and last week was Diabetes week.
Dr. John is just the person to see about your eye health and carry out eye examinations to detect any changes due to diabetes.
