Meet Jess and Koah! For Jess and her family, joining GenV was an easy decision. Particularly after seeing the benefits of care guided by research. Their middle child Reggie was born Deaf. Their family saw firsthand how data collection can lead to better outcomes for families. Jess believes that having answers is powerful, especially when navigating health challenges.

Now, with Koah as a GenV kid, Jess appreciates how simple it is to take part. From quick sign-up to gentle reminders and quick check-ins via the app. Her family feels supported every step of the way.

Most of all, Jess knows their contribution is safe, secure, and meaningful. “It was a no-brainer,” she says. “It's such a big data collection opportunity that requires so little from us.”.

GenV’s first focus survey is now underway! GenV, and are working together to understand family experiences of store-bought foods for young children. A big thank you to over 4,000 GenV families who have helped us so far.

It's not too late! If you have been sent a survey, you can still complete it. Your input can help improve the food choices available to families now and in the future.

We caught up with Dr. Sherly Li, paediatric dietitian and GenV Research Fellow, to talk about why learning from family experiences with food is so important to improving children’s health. Read more at our blog - https://www.genv.org.au/food-survey/

This week is NAIDOC week! NAIDOC week highlights the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year's theme is The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy. This theme feels so relevant to GenV. This year we're progressing important work to develop First Nations led Data Governance and Sovereignty with GenV's First Nations Advisory Group.

We hope this work both supports and honours the strength, vision and legacy of First Nations communities. Especially, the more than 900 GenV parents who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and their children who are taking part in GenV.

Thank you to our incredible First Nations families who are making this work possible.

Today is World Microbiome Day!

Celebrated on the 27th of June, it focuses on raising awareness of the role of our microbiome. This includes how our microbiome impacts health, environment and daily life.

Richard Saffery, GenV’s Deputy Scientific Director, talks about GenV’s longitudinal child stool samples and how these are so important to science. Thanks to our GenV families, we have almost 10,000 child stool samples helping make this possible! 💩

This year’s Refugee Week theme celebrates the power of community. It celebrates the richness that comes from our diverse stories, cultures, and experiences.

At GenV, we believe that every family’s voice matters — including families from refugee backgrounds. These families bring strength, resilience, and diversity to our shared future.

GenV is Australia’s largest child and parent research project. We are dedicated to making GenV inclusive and accessible to all. No matter where families come from, what language they speak, or what their story is. Every family is welcome.

Because true freedom means being seen, included, and valued in the communities we call home.

GenV’s first focus survey is coming in June!

Food is an important part of our lives. There are lots of store-brought foods for babies and young children in our supermarkets. From pouches to snacks and meals. We are excited to be sending our first focus survey this week.

We want to hear from GenV parents about their experiences with these foods. For example, what are the most common types of foods your child eats? We’ll be sending surveys to primary parents from June – July.

GenV parent responses can help inform new rules for how these foods are made and sold.

GenV Parents – Keep an eye out for your ‘About Your Child’s Food Survey’!

It's International ! Celebrated every year, it promotes and supports the importance of men’s health in our communities. This includes focusing on physical and mental health, and emotional wellbeing.

Over 49,000 dads and boys are part of GenV! This makes us one of the largest male cohorts in the world! At GenV, we know dads are an important part of the family health and wellbeing puzzle. The more dads that join our research, the clearer our picture of family wellbeing becomes. It takes very little of your time and has a big impact.

It’s National Reconciliation Week! A time to build relationships, respect and trust between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider Australian community by learning about our shared histories, cultures and achievements.

The 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future.

The theme artwork is created by Kalkadoon woman Bree Buttenshaw. The native plants, which thrive in Australia’s climate, symbolise our collective strength and the possibilities of renewal.

This week we celebrate the International Day of the Midwife! This day is celebrated each year on the 5th of May. This year’s theme is “Midwives in Every Crisis.”
The COVID-19 pandemic reaffirmed the vital role midwives play in caring for mothers and children. In our recent Medical Journal of Australia article, we highlight the valuable data midwives collected on children born during this global crisis.
We call for this data to be available to link with other key datasets. Datasets like GenV. This could help us better understand the long-term health and wellbeing of these families. Lastly, we say a big thank you to all the midwives in our health system and who we have worked with us over the years.

It’s World Immunisation Week! We’re spotlighting our collaboration with the GenV Maternal Vaccine Study. This collaboration is led by Professor Margie Danchin at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute - MCRI.

Some parents want more information about the safety of vaccines in pregnancy. This includes COVID-19 and Flu vaccines. This study looks at health outcomes of mothers, as well as longer-term health and development outcomes of their child. It aims to enable best protection of pregnant women and their children against diseases. It could also help inform future pandemic planning.

GenV and the Maternal Vaccine Study are working together to build stronger evidence and support parents to make confident, informed choices. Learn more about our collaborations: genv.org.au/for-researchers/current-genv-collaborations/
