Dr Michael Haller is in AUS!

Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet researcher Dr Michael Haller (pictured centre) visited the Australia/New Zealand TrialNet Coordintating Centre at the The Royal Melbourne Hospital/Walter and Eliza Hall Institute this morning to share the results of the ATG-GCSF study in newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes.

The Two-year findings of this study confirmed continuation of the positive effects reported 1 year after the start of treatment:

* Low-dose Thymoglobulin preserved beta cell function and improved insulin production.
* Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were significantly lower (indicating better long-term blood glucose control) in people treated with low-dose Thymoglobulin alone and those treated with low-dose Thymoglobulin combined with Neulasta, when compared to placebo.

Jamie Cripps is an AFL Premiership player with T1D!

He has to check his blood sugar at quarter-time, half-time, three-quarter time and full-time every match, but that didn't stop him from scoring a goal in the Grand Final (and 38 for the season) for the West Coast Eagles.

Read more about his inspirational story below 🏈👇

In 2010, Jamie Cripps was lying in a hospital bed with a secret he didn't want AFL clubs to find out about. Cripps was an 18-year-old rising star who looked d...

A big thankyou also to the participants around Australia and New Zealand for their participation in the TrialNet oral insulin study, results are out!

The risk for type 1 diabetes development was not decreased in autoantibody-positive relatives of patients with type 1 diabetes randomly assigned to oral insulin, and oral insulin did not delay the time to diabetes progression, study data show. “We now know that we can identify people long befo...

Dr. Carla Greenbaum, TrialNet Chair, from the Benaroya Research Institute in Seattle, Washington, USA, will be speaking at the upcoming ADS & ADEA meeting in Perth, Australia on Wednesday August 30th, 2017. Her talk titled “Disease modifying therapy in type 1 diabetes; what an endocrinologist needs to know” will highlight TrialNet’s recent research advances and how TrialNet is aiming to stop disease progression in people identified at the early stages of type 1 diabetes.

She will be joining other national and international experts to promote the exchange of the latest clinical practices and cutting edge research in diabetes.

we can now identify individuals at very early stages of T1D. This alone can prevent dka. But the real issue is to delay progession to clinical disease. Recent trial results are tantalizing.
