Kind Cuts For Kids

Kind Cuts For Kids Kind Cuts for Kids is an Australian based organisation that improves medical services for children in developing countries around the world.

Kind Cuts for Kids improves the lives of children in developing countries around the world. Our specialist medical teams conduct a range of surgical procedures which are not readily available in that country, while educating local health care professionals. Our aim is self sufficiency in these procedures in each country that we visit.

Three days in Jordan, on the 5th Kind Cuts for Kids visit. A great team has coordinated the review of 24 patients, and we have operated on six of them. Including a now 24 year old "child" who first presented with abdominal pain when she started to menstruate (at 12 years old) ... the pain was because there was no connection between the upper and lower part of her va**na (a congenital anomaly). An attempt to repair the problem resulted in her having faeces coming from her lower va**na, but the me**es still not draining, since that operation, for which she had a colostomy 2 years ago - today we have performed life-changing surgery that has solved the problem.

The sign on the theatre door says it all ... "busy"

My recent trip to Mozambique reminds me of my first outreach visit ... to Russia ... in 1989; below are photos of "the" train disaster; an illustration of the impact, and a reflective poem (published by Papyrus Publishing).

CHELYABINSK

A twisted, metal covered railway track
bisected three mile of
dead forest and reached
out across the world.

Hearts and minds responded;
bodies changed geography
(in chase of souls in search of souls).

Their hands of sympathy
helped hands of gratitude
as together they molded
both the shape of some
and the destiny of many.

Kind words and deeds
were exchanged by the visited
and the visitors:
all were added to the tattoo
carved by that explosion.

Cast iron figures
and clever wooden dolls
are the only visible remnants
of the wheel of history
being turned, again,
by the force of the dead and dying.

Our first trip to Samoa, collaborating with the Oceania University of Medicine. We have reviewed 16 patients today, 5 without an a**l opening, and 6 with bowel blockage due to the lack of nerves to the lower bowel - Hirschsprung disease.

Professor Paddy Dewan is again heading overseas to help children in need of surgery... this time in Samoa. This trip is a partnership between Kcfk and the Oceania University of Medicine. Thus far we have a list of 22 children with Hirschsprung disease and antenatal anomalies ... both major congenital anomalies.
