Statement on the Bondi Beach Tragedy โ 14 December 2025
Our hearts are heavy as we process the devastating events at Bondi Beach yesterday evening.
The loss of innocent lives during what should have been a joyful Hanukkah celebration is a profound tragedy for our entire community. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed, and our thoughts are with the many who remain in hospital recovering from their injuries.
To Sydney's Jewish community: we see you, we grieve with you, and we stand with you. An attack targeting people for their faith strikes at the heart of who we are as a multicultural society.
Understanding your reactions
It is entirely normal to feel shocked, frightened, angry, or numb in response to events like theseโeven if you were not directly involved. Collective trauma can shake our sense of safety and may resurface past experiences of grief, loss, or vulnerability.
You may notice difficulty sleeping, intrusive thoughts about the event, heightened anxiety in public spaces, or feeling emotionally disconnected. These are common responses to extraordinary circumstances.
Looking after yourself
In the coming days and weeks:
Limit your exposure to distressing news coverage and graphic imagery
Stay connected with people you trust
Maintain daily routines where possible
Be patient and compassionate with yourself and others
Allow yourself to feel what you feel without judgement
When to seek support
Please reach out for professional support if you experience:
Persistent difficulty functioning at work or home
Overwhelming emotions that don't ease with time
Flashbacks or nightmares
Thoughts of self-harm
