Today is 'R U OK? Day'. A day that reminds us of the power we have to make a huge difference in someone's life when we simply check in with them and show we care.

"Are you OK?” is more than just a question, it’s a conversation that could change a life.

How it can look:
💬 Start with care: Genuinely ask, "How are you?"
👂 Listen: Give them your full attention, without trying to fix things.
🧡 Support: Encourage them to seek help if they need it.
🤝 Follow up: A simple message later on can make all the difference.

What to do if someone says they're not ok?
🩵 Give them time and space to talk about what they're going through
🩵Come up with some ideas together that might lighten their load of help them feel a little better
🩵 Encourage them to seek support - this could be family, a friend or a health professional
🩵 Check in regularly so that they know you care and are there for them

You don't have to have the answers or be able to solve their problems, but you can help them consider the next steps and actions they can take to manage their situation.

💜 World Alzheimer’s Month | September 2025 💜

Each September, people around the world come together to raise awareness and challenge stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and all types of dementia.

This year’s campaign encourages open conversations through and , helping to change perceptions, normalise questions, and build understanding.

Dementia affects over 55 million people globally, and in Australia, it is the second leading cause of death. More than 400,000 Australians are currently living with dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common form. Families and carers are also deeply impacted.

Here’s how you can take part this September:

~ Learn more about dementia and its impact
~ Ask questions to better understand
~ Share resources and stories to support others
~ Help spread awareness in your community

💙 Happy Father’s Day! 💙

To all the dads out there, thank you for your love, guidance, and all the little (and big) ways you make life sweeter. You are appreciated today and every day!

“Dads are like chocolate chip cookies; they may have chips or be a little nutty, but they are sweet and make the world a better place.”

🩹✨ Wound Awareness Week 2025 | 1–7 September ✨🩹

Did you know chronic wounds affect over 420,000 Australians each year? Often called “Australia’s hidden epidemic,” many wounds can be prevented or managed early.

This Wound Awareness Week highlights the importance of open conversations about wound care, especially for older Australians receiving Support at Home.

Wounds Australia Life Member Dr Jenny Prentice has developed skin tear conversation starters to support carers, families, and Support at Home teams. These prompts make it easier to talk about skin health and wound prevention, helping keep older Australians safe, comfortable, and well. Check the full list here: https://tinyurl.com/4user2uf

Further resources:

Wound Awareness Week website (www.woundaware.org) – factsheets in six languages and free daily webinars for care professionals on wound types, prevention, and collaborative care.

International Skin Tear Advisory Panel (www.skintears.org) – resources like the Skin Tear Tool Kit and Risk Assessment Pathway to guide care professionals.

We hope these resources help prevent wounds and support the wellbeing of our older Australians. 💚

Our team recently had the privilege of participating in specialised training on Montessori methods in aged care, led by Australia’s foremost expert in the field, Anne Kelly.

The training explored how Montessori principles can enhance independence, dignity, and engagement for older adults, particularly those living with dementia. It was an inspiring and practical session that has equipped our team with new tools to deliver person-centred care that truly makes a difference. Our occupational therapists including Briana, (pictured with Anne) are available for home assessments that are informed by Montessori principles.

Please get in touch if you would like to find out more about Montessori methods in aged care and how we incorporate these into our work with clients.

This week is Brain Injury Awareness Week. 💜🧠💜

The powerful theme for this year is 'Invisible disabilities deserve visible change.'

At Focus Care, we know that brain injury is often an invisible disability - one that can affect memory, communication, mobility, behaviour, relationships and so much more. The impacts are deeply felt, even if they can’t always be seen.

This Brain Injury Awareness Week, we support Synapse (Australia’s Brain Injury Organisation) and the wider community in calling for visible change.

Brain injury often intersects with issues like domestic and family violence, justice, and homelessness, and by raising awareness, we can help break down systemic barriers and create more inclusive pathways of support.

Synapse has some great ways for you to get invoked this week:

Here’s how you can get involved:
✅ Join an event online or in person
✅ Visit one of 70+ Light Up locations & enter Photography Competition
✅ Register for our webinar Brain Injury and Staying Connected
✅ Download the free resources & toolkit
✅ Read powerful personal stories
✅ Share the message using

Find out more via www.synapse.org.au.

Whether you’re living with brain injury, supporting someone, or working in the sector, you have our support in being seen, heard, and empowered.

A few weeks ago, our founder Christina took part in the Shaping the Future of Aged Care Conference in Sydney, speaking on a powerful panel alongside leaders from RFBI, Catholic Healthcare, and Infinite Care.

The panel tackled one of the most pressing issues in aged care: workforce challenges — from attraction to retention and long-term solutions.

Christina shared Focus Care’s unique approach to these challenges, including how we’re continuing to build a strong Employee Value Proposition for our incredible support workers.

It was an honour to have our voice heard among such respected organisations — and to receive such positive feedback from the audience. 💙

We're proud to stay actively engaged in shaping the future of the aged care sector.

💛 Happy Aged Care Employee Day! 💛

We want to say a big thank you to our incredible team and to every aged care worker across the country.

To our own staff: we see the care, patience, and kindness you bring to work every day. You make people feel safe, valued, and supported, and that means everything. Whether you're on the floor, in the kitchen, behind the desk, or out in the community, you’re the reason our clients feel at home. We're so proud to have you with us.

And to all aged care workers across Australia - thank you for showing up with your heart and for the small things you do that make a big difference. Today is about you, and you deserve to be celebrated!

“It takes a village to make sure our elders reach a safe harbour at the end of their lives.”

These were the wise words shared by the well-known actor and comedian Jean Kittson at the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission National Aged Care Provider Conference last week.

Over the two days, we heard from many representatives from the Department and Commission about the new Aged Care Act and how to prepare for the once-in-a-lifetime changes it will bring. We heard from the new Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissioner, Liz Hefren-Webb, about the changes she plans to make to the Commission to enable greater collaboration with the sector. We also heard from Anne Burgess, Chair of the Aged Care Council of the Elders, who shared the voices of older people, their wishes for their care, and how we can work with them to achieve the best outcomes. There were many others too, including TV newsreader Richard Morecroft as MC!

We all now have long action lists to ensure we’re ready for 1 November!

Remember: we are the village for our clients (and participants). The work you do to support them, not only in helping them reach a safe harbour at the end of their lives but also in walking alongside them throughout their journey, is so important and deeply valued.
