National Diabetes Week

Every day almost 300 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes. But for many the diagnosis is being made too late putting them at risk of life threatening or serious health issues. Diabetes Australia are urging people to “take the time” to learn the signs and symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Each year 640 children and adults are admitted to hospital because the early symptoms of type 1 diabetes – severe fatigue, thirst, and weight loss – are not recognised. More than half of these hospital admissions are children and teens and when you know that type 1 diabetes can be fatal if not diagnosed in time – making sure the early signs and symptoms are picked up is critical.

On top of this there are almost half million who are living with type 2 diabetes but don’t know it. That’s because type 2 diabetes can be “silent” and occur without any obvious symptoms. When type 2 diabetes goes undiagnosed there is the danger of complications like vision loss and blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage and heart disease occurring.

Early Diagnosis is vital to successful management and treatment.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month – This event aims to raise awareness of Australia's second deadliest cancer and funds for the leading community-funded charity dedicated to prevention, early diagnosis, research, quality treatment and the best care for those affected by bowel cancer.

Bowel cancer claims the lives of 103 Australians every week (5,336 people a year) - but it's one of the most treatable types of cancer if detected early.
296 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer this week (15,352 people a year)
While the risk of bowel cancer increases significantly with age, the disease doesn't discriminate, affecting men and women, young and old.

World Asthma Day is held each May to raise awareness of Asthma worldwide.

The WHO recognizes that asthma is a common and major public health issue. According to WHO, it was estimated that more than 339 million people had Asthma globally and there were 417,918 deaths due to asthma at the global level in 2016.

Although asthma cannot be cured, it is possible to manage asthma to reduce and prevent asthma attacks, also called episodes or exacerbations.

This year’s World Asthma Day theme is “Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions”. This theme is a call to action to address common widely held myths and misconceptions concerning asthma that prevent persons with asthma from enjoying optimal benefit from the major advances in the management of this condition.
