This new Queensland-first homebirth service is all about empowering women with more choices in maternity care! 👶

The Publicly Funded Homebirth service is launching at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital mid-next year. This will allow expectant mothers with low-risk pregnancies the choice to give birth in the comfort of their own home. 🏡

Research shows that planned homebirths, attended by skilled midwives, have similar safety outcomes to hospital births. 👩‍⚕️🏥 For the safety of the mother and baby, a number of criteria will be considered to determine whether this service is suitable.

The outcomes of the service, including safety and quality, benefits to women, sustainability, consumer interest, and feedback, will guide future planning and investments in other parts of Queensland.

A huge thank you to the hardworking staff and consumers who've made this service possible! 🥰

New and expectant Queensland parents will soon have another way to track their mental health. 🫄

Perinatal mental health conditions can occur at any time during or after a pregnancy. The most commonly experienced ones are anxiety and depression. More serious conditions, such as postpartum psychosis or bipolar disorder, can also occur but are less common.

A new program called iCOPE is being rolled out across the state after the pilot program was launched by Darling Downs Health two months ago.

This new tool will help mums and their families feel reassured during pregnancy, birth and the first 12 months of parenthood. It will be used as part of their antenatal appointments and will screen for signs of mental health conditions. The program aims to increase awareness of perinatal mental health and help clinicians provide improved services for families. 📱

iCOPE sends mothers an SMS with a link to a questionnaire that can be done at home. Clinicians are then provided with a tailored report so they can have a conversation with the mothers about their mental health. Necessary steps can then be taken towards improving their wellbeing. 🤗

What a fantastic initiative for local families. ❤️

Today is RU OK day - a reminder to pause, reflect, and check in on those around you.

It is also a reminder to check in with yourself- how are you really doing?

Here is a simple mindfulness exercise that can help you to pause and reflect:

✨find a quiet spot to sit, close your eyes, and bring your attention to your breath.
✨slowly breath in and out, breathing deep into your belly.
✨gently scan your body, noticing any feelings or sensations. Don’t judge them or try to change them, simply notice with a sense of openness and curiosity.
✨if there is discomfort, notice where it sits in your body, and with each breath, try to create more space around the feeling. You don’t need to change or get rid of it, simply sit with it.
✨at the end of the exercise, ask yourself “what do I need right now?”, and find a small way to act on that need.

If you are not ok, there is help and support available for you. You don’t have to struggle alone 💚

Feelings of guilt are one of the most common experiences in parenthood, particularly in the early years. We’re constantly bombarded with societal expectations on “perfect parenting” which create unrelenting standards that are impossible to meet, leading to endless spirals of shame, guilt and self-criticism.

We are often our own biggest critic, but leaning into the “shoulds” doesn’t make us a better parent, it only leaves us feeling inadequate and stuck.

The next time you notice guilt popping up, take these 3 steps:
1. Be self compassionate. Speak to yourself the way you’d speak to a friend.
2. Ask yourself: is this guilt helpful or unhelpful? Is guiding me towards my values/the kind of parent I want to be?
3. Turn your “shoulds” into “coulds”.

Remember mama, you’re doing great. Be gentle on yourself! 💚
