Ever noticed those days when your brain just doesn't seem to want to cooperate? Memory lapses, difficulty concentrating, and a pervasive sense of mental fog can be more than just signs of stress or fatigue—they might indicate a choline deficiency.

Choline: The Brain's Essential Nutrient
Choline is a vital nutrient that plays a crucial role in brain health and function. It's involved in building cell membranes, producing signaling molecules, and supporting neurotransmission. Despite its importance, our bodies cannot produce enough choline on their own, making dietary intake essential.

CDP-Choline (Citicoline)
While choline is the nutrient our brains need, CDP-choline (citicoline) is a supplemental form that provides both choline and cytidine, offering dual benefits for cognitive health. Upon ingestion, CDP-choline is broken down into choline and cytidine, with choline supporting brain function and overall cognitive health.

Symptoms of Choline Deficiency:

Persistent brain fog that clouds your daily activities
Challenges in maintaining focus or attention
Forgetting things more frequently than usual

Why CDP-Choline?
CDP-choline supplements serve as a direct source of choline for the brain, aiding in:

Neurogenesis: Supporting the growth of new brain cells.
Cognitive Function: Enhancing memory, focus, and learning capabilities.
Energy Metabolism: Boosting the brain's energy use and efficiency.

Adequate choline levels can transform how your brain operates. Imagine moving from a state of haze to one of clarity, where thoughts are crisp, learning comes effortlessly, and memories are easily recalled. This isn't about reaching superhuman mental capacities but restoring your brain to its full, natural potential.

If you're battling with mental sluggishness, consider evaluating your choline intake. Whether through diet or supplements like CDP-choline, nourishing your brain with the nutrients it needs is a step towards reclaiming mental clarity and focus.

Have you ever felt your heart suddenly skip a beat, flutter, or start racing out of the blue? Heart palpitations can be a bewildering experience, often leaving us wondering about the "whys" and "hows" of their occurrence. While the precise cause of heart palpitations can vary, understanding the role of nutritional balance in maintaining the heart's electrical signalling offers enlightening insights into how we might influence our heart health.

At the heart (pun intended) of our cardiovascular system is an intricate electrical network responsible for orchestrating each heartbeat. This system ensures that our hearts beat in a rhythmic and coordinated manner, pumping blood efficiently throughout our bodies. However, disruptions in this electrical signalling can lead to the unusual sensations we recognise as palpitations. But what can cause these disruptions?

Several factors can throw our heart's rhythm off beat. Stress, dehydration, and even certain medications play their part. But did you know nutrient deficiencies, particularly in electrolytes, can significantly impact your heart's electrical system? Yes, the minerals we often overlook play a starring role in maintaining our heart's rhythm.

This infographic explores a sample protocol that I use with clients, incorporating nutraceuticals that support the cardiovascular system.

While nutrition plays a pivotal role in heart health, managing stress is also crucial. Stress can trigger the release of adrenaline, which may provoke palpitations by increasing heart rate and blood pressure.

Are we providing our cardiovascular system with what it needs to function optimally?

Have you ever wondered how our body manages to break down the food we consume, transforming it into the very molecules that constitute ourselves, without digesting its own tissues? It's a fascinating process that hinges largely on the role of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid (HCl)). This powerful substance is a cornerstone of the digestive process, orchestrating a complex process of chemical reactions from the moment food is consumed until its nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream.

I had to learn about stomach acid the hard way. For me eating any less than three hours before bed meant a night of turmoil, often jolting awake feeling like I couldn't breathe. Then, I discovered something that changed everything: Betaine hydrochloride, a supplement aimed at optimising stomach acid levels.

The change wasn't just minor; it was transformative. Gone were the days of timing my last meal like a science experiment. Now, I could enjoy dinner and not long after, go for a run—something previously unthinkable. I'm pretty sure that if I wanted to, I could hang upside down after dinner! Reflecting on what led me here, stress stood out as a significant factor. It's amazing, really, how stress impacts the enteric nervous system, throwing a wrench in the works of gastric juice production.

This journey sparked my curiosity about other factors that could tamper with gastric acid secretion. It turns out, the list is quite extensive, ranging from dietary habits to medication use, and even to the natural ageing process. Each of these elements can subtly shift the delicate balance of our digestive system, affecting not just how we process food but our overall comfort and health.

***PRACTITIONER RESTRICTED PRODUCT****

In a market flooded with supplements claiming to boost your cellular energy, Mito-Charge genuinely stands out, and here's why: it's the inclusion of D-ribose, calcium pyruvate, and nicotinamide riboside that sets it apart. These aren't just fancy ingredients; they're the cornerstone of energy production within our cells.

Let me break it down simply. Imagine the Krebs cycle as the engine room of our cells, where the food we eat is transformed into ATP, the fuel that powers virtually every cell in our body. It's a complex process, but it's where D-ribose, calcium pyruvate, and nicotinamide riboside shine.

D-ribose is like the spark that ignites the engine, forming the backbone of ATP. Without it, we're essentially trying to drive with the handbrake on – energy production just can't hit full speed.

Calcium pyruvate is a high-quality fuel that gets burned for energy. It gets into the mitochondria, transforming into acetyl-CoA, kicking off the Krebs cycle, and turbocharging the production of energy.

Lastly, nicotinamide riboside, a form of vitamin B3, works to boost NAD+, a crucial coenzyme for the reactions that keep the Krebs cycle spinning. Think of it as the oil that keeps the engine running smoothly, ensuring we're getting the most energy out of every breath we take.

Mito-Charge is more than just a supplement; it's a comprehensive approach to fueling our cellular engines, optimising the conversion of food into ATP with a precision blend of nutrients. This isn't about a quick fix; it's about providing our cells with the support they need to produce energy efficiently, supporting our overall vitality and well-being.

Remember, this is a practitioner-restricted product, so consult with your naturopath to see if Mito-Charge is right for you.

Iron is a key player in our health, essential for oxygen transport and energy levels. But here's the thing - despite its importance, our bodies have a cap on how much iron we can actually absorb daily from food and supplements, which is just about 1 to 4 milligrams (6-8mg if you are really deficient!). Surprising, right? Especially for those of us taking large doses of iron supplements, expecting a significant jump in our iron levels.

So, how does our body keep up its iron supply? The answer lies in an ingenious process called iron recycling. The majority of our daily iron needs are met not through our diet, but by recycling iron from old red blood cells. This not only conserves resources but ensures a steady supply of this crucial mineral.

But for this recycling process to work smoothly, it needs helpers – specific nutrients that facilitate iron absorption and utilisation:

Vitamin C: A hero in enhancing iron absorption, making sure we get the most out of the iron available to us.
Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene: These nutrients assist in mobilising iron from its stores, ready for action.
Copper: An essential element that aids in the formation of red blood cells and the release of stored iron.
Incorporating foods rich in these nutrients can significantly impact how effectively our body uses and recycles iron, perhaps more so than just increasing our iron intake.
So, what's the takeaway? It's not just about how much iron we consume but how well our body can process and recycle it. Embracing a balanced diet that supports this natural cycle can help us maintain optimal iron levels, showcasing the power of working with our body's incredible systems.

I want to introduce you to a product I've found genuinely impressive: Basica Active. I have been prescribing this to my clients for over a decade. While it's marketed as an alkalising mineral formula, in my view, it stands out as one of the finest electrolyte formulas available. What sets it apart? It's the meticulous balance of electrolytes, specifically bound to citrates....

Now, why does this matter? The inclusion of citrates plays a pivotal role in the production of ATP, which, for those unfamiliar, serves as the primary energy carrier within our cells. This is where the significance of sodium and potassium comes into play, as these electrolytes are fundamental in the process of energy production.

To elaborate, sodium and potassium are central to the operation of the sodium-potassium pump. This cellular mechanism is responsible for maintaining the essential gradient across cell membranes, crucial for numerous physiological processes, including nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction. It's worth noting that a substantial portion of our body's energy expenditure—approximately 20-30%—is dedicated to sustaining the activity of this pump. This highlights the importance of a well-balanced electrolyte intake.

Basica Active excels in providing a perfect ratio of these electrolytes, all bound to citrates, facilitating not just enhanced absorption but also contributing to efficient ATP production.

Beyond its incredible benefits, Basica Active is a joy to consume. Delicious, easy to mix, and perfect for your active lifestyle, it makes maintaining electrolyte balance not just important but utterly enjoyable. Whether you're an athlete, a fitness enthusiast, doing intermittent or extended fasting, or just someone looking to energise your daily routine, Basica Active is your go-to solution for staying hydrated, balanced, and energised.

Ever thought the very pursuits for health could be silently depleting you? Here's a wake-up call I had to learn the hard way. Last year, amidst ramping up my workouts, adding carnitine to my regime (which can make you sweat more), and hitting the sauna more often, my eye began to twitch uncontrollably for months. It was baffling and frustrating, to say the least.

It dawned on me that with every drop of sweat, I wasn't just losing water but vital minerals and nutrients. My "healthier" lifestyle was actually costing me more than I was replenishing. It wasn't until I aligned my intake with what I was losing that the relentless twitch finally ceased.

So, to those meticulously exercising, intermittent fasting, sauna hopping, and guzzling water yet facing overwhelming fatigue, muscle cramps, headaches, brain fog, or even constantly peeing (especially at night) - it might be time to pause and think. Are we unknowingly running a deficit on our body's nutrient bank?

Consider this: every molecule of ATP, the energy currency of our cells, requires a magnesium ion to become biologically active. Yes, without magnesium, ATP remains unrecognisable to our body's processes.

Then you have Iron which plays a pivotal role in our energy production too, acting as a key component of complexes I, II, and III in the electron transport chain. Simply put, without sufficient iron, our capacity to generate energy is significantly compromised.

And what about iodine? Its role in regulating our metabolic rate is paramount.

And I haven't even gotten into sodium and potassium! We will need a whole post for that!

Our pursuit of health shouldn’t be at the cost of our well-being. It’s crucial to balance our lifestyle choices with our body’s needs. If you're experiencing symptoms like poor stress resilience, irregular heartbeats, or poor heat tolerance, it might be a sign to reevaluate your nutrient intake.

Sometimes, more sweat doesn't mean more gain, especially if it leaves us depleted.

Collagen, specifically Type 1, is the bedrock of our skin's structural integrity. Found abundantly in Marine Collagen, this particular type plays a crucial role at the cellular level, forming a resilient framework that promotes elasticity and supports overall skin health.

In our twenties, we experience peak collagen synthesis, contributing to the supple and resilient nature of youthful skin. However, as the years progress, typically by our thirties, the natural decline in collagen production becomes more apparent. This decline is a key factor in the formation of fine lines and a reduction in skin elasticity.

Now, what accelerates this decline? Factors such as exposure to UV rays, pollution, smoking, and an unhealthy diet can expedite collagen breakdown. These stressors contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation, negatively impacting collagen synthesis.

Picture this: someone with robust collagen synthesis enjoys skin that appears plump, firm, and resilient. On the contrary, symptoms of poor collagen synthesis may manifest as sagging skin, wrinkles, and a loss of that coveted youthful volume.

In my professional practice, I've found that the magic lies in the dose – a factor that can truly be a game-changer. While many collagen products suggest 5g doses, I've observed, both personally and with my clients, that a more robust approach yields more significant results. I recommend a daily intake of 20 grams of Marine Collagen. This higher dose seems to harness the true potential of collagen supplementation, promoting optimal collagen synthesis and delivering visible improvements in skin elasticity, hydration, and the reduction of fine lines sometimes in as little as a few weeks. It's a testament to the importance of precision in supplementation; the correct dose can elevate the efficacy of any supplement, and in the case of Marine Collagen, it can make a noticeable difference in the quest for radiant, youthful skin.

In my journey working with clients, I've encountered many grappling with the challenges of a slow metabolism. Check out the carousel for the surprising signs, but let me first go into what metabolism truly means.

Metabolism isn't just a buzzword; it's the engine driving our vitality our essence the Qi which fuels every bodily process. Think of it as your body's efficiency expert, turning the food you eat into the energy you need to power through your day.

Now, here's the thing – when people complain about stubborn weight gain or seek hacks to 'speed up' their metabolism, it often stems from a fundamental misunderstanding. Metabolism isn't a magical speed dial; it's the intricate process of converting your meals into energy.

It's like wanting to rev up your car without realising how the engine works. Metabolism is that engine – the efficient conversion of what you eat into the fuel that keeps you going. A clinical pearl for you: the byproduct of this energy conversion is heat.

Your body doesn't reduce its metabolic rate without reason; there's typically an underlying cause. To genuinely rejuvenate your metabolism, your body needs assurance that expending energy is both safe and advantageous.

By providing your body with nutritious foods, maintaining a regular exercise routine, and ensuring sufficient rest, you create optimal conditions for your metabolism to operate smoothly. When your body's internal engine is well-tuned – balancing hormones, nutrients, and cellular processes – it contributes to overall health and vitality.

In my practice, I've seen firsthand the transformative impact of omega-3 supplementation. Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, vital nutrients that our bodies cannot synthesise on their own. This means we must obtain them through diet or supplements. At the cellular level, omega-3s are more than just building blocks; they are dynamic players in maintaining cell membrane integrity, ensuring fluidity and proper functioning of cell receptors.

What makes omega-3s so powerful? It's their broad-spectrum influence on health. From mitigating chronic inflammation – a root cause of numerous health issues – to supporting cognitive function and slowing cognitive decline, the benefits are profound. Their role doesn't stop there; omega-3s are crucial for maintaining healthy skin, aiding in the prevention of dry, flaky, or inflamed skin conditions. Moreover, they contribute significantly to a healthier metabolic profile, impacting everything from cholesterol levels to overall cardiovascular health.

Prescribing the correct dosages of omega-3s has been a game changer for my clients. It's a simple intervention, yet the outcomes are far-reaching. Whether it's enhancing mental clarity, improving skin health, or contributing to overall wellbeing, the efficacy of omega-3s is undeniable. Remember, it's not just about adding a supplement to your routine; it's about enriching your body with a nutrient it fundamentally requires but cannot produce.

Struggling with Weight Loss? It's Not Just About Calories!

I see it all the time - incredible people, pushing their limits at the gym despite the pain, skimping on sleep to fit in that early morning workout, all in the hopes of shedding just a few more pounds. But here's the frustrating truth: sometimes, the very efforts you think should be helping are actually fanning the flames of something hidden - inflammation.

You might be thinking, "Inflammation? But I'm not injured!" Well, that's the misconception. Inflammation isn't always something you can see or feel in the form of pain. It can be a silent saboteur, especially when it comes to insulin resistance, which is a key factor in weight loss.

Let me bust a myth: Many believe that only excess glucose leads to insulin resistance. Nope, not the whole story! Yes, high blood sugar levels can contribute, but inflammation can disrupt insulin signalling in a different way - even if you're eating in a calorie deficit.

Here's what's happening: In a body that's inflamed, your cells are like they've got their headphones on, blaring loud music (aka pro-inflammatory cytokines). When insulin knocks on the door to say, "Hey, let's get this glucose out of the bloodstream and into the cell," the message gets lost in the noise. Why? Because inflammation messes with the proteins that help insulin do its job.

So, what's the game plan? First, we clean up the diet, identify food triggers. Next, I know you won't like this, but... we may need to swap those high-intensity workouts for something a bit gentler, just for a while. Trust me, your body will thank you.

Sleep - it's non-negotiable.

And supplements? I often bring out the big guns - omega-3s, pro-resolving mediators, boswellia, curcumin - to support your body's natural anti-inflammatory processes.
