There is something so sacred about being invited into the birthspace - especially alongside such powerful birthing women and deeply skilled midwives who's expertise is offered with a calm steady reassurance.

Homebirth has no machines that go "ding", no rigid timelines, no stream of unknowns stepping into your most vulnerable moments. At home, time softens. Birth is allowed to unfold in its own rhythm - slow, steady, instinctive, utterly beautiful.

It's an honour every single time to witness that power and be part of such a grounded, gentle space.🤍

Thank you Natalie and Nathan for choosing and trusting me to share your journey, and for the beautiful google review below. 💕

Chill vibes- 😎

In birth, presence matters more than perfection. A calm, supportive energy helps birthing people feel safe enough to let their bodies do what they were made to do.

I don’t like “preaching” on social media, but with the devastating news of late in the freebirth world- its struck a raw nerve in me 😡. Im NOT a freebirth doula for my own personal reasons, but I will stand by autonomy and a woman’s choice to birth their baby wherever they choose and with whoever they choose to be present.

Birth has always belonged to women.
The laws already cover unregistered practice — nothing new has changed. Don’t let the media spin fear where there is none.

When 1 in 3 women leave birth in our hospitals feeling traumatised, it’s clear why more are choosing to freebirth - seeking safety, autonomy, and trust in their bodies.

We NEED more affordable continuity of care models for “all risk” women. We don’t need laws to silence birthing women anymore than they already are!

Before you come at me….. Im not pro- freebirth. I am pro choice. I am ANTI authorotative knowledge where women are stripped of their rights.

PART #2 - THE SEQUEL (refer to yesterday if you didn't see #1)

✨ Knowledge is grounding ✨

Understanding your rights under informed consent and refusal helps you make decisions that feel right for you. Remember — hospital policy isn’t law.

A written birth map or preference sheet is a simple but powerful tool. Attach it to your hospital file so your wishes are always visible. Your doula can help you with this — or check out The Birth Map – INFORMED | SUPPORTED | CONFIDENT for great resources.

🌿 Build your village
Choose care that offers continuity and genuine support — whether that’s a private midwife, an MGP or CMP program, and having a doula by your side. The people in your birth space truly shape how supported and safe you feel.

🤍 Practice calm but firm advocacy
Kind and assertive is a powerful combo. Try:
– “Can you explain the evidence behind that recommendation?”
– “What are the risks or benefits if we wait?”
– “We’re not giving consent to that right now.”
Or my personal favourite (thanks to Vicki Hobbs): “Can I please have some time?”

💫 Remember: choice is always there — even when it doesn’t feel like it.
Reflecting, learning, and speaking up helps us reclaim autonomy and create change — one birth at a time.
Hint...Your FIRST birth paves the way🥰

This blog was fuelled by frustration, sadness and anger at the time.
My first draft would have got me in all sorts of hot water apparently 🙄 so my hubby (my voice of reason) said “babe you might want to tame it down". I've since written PART #2 - which rolls out tomorrrow so stay tuned.

https://perthdoulaservices.com.au/blog/when-autonomy-feels-lost-navigating-control-in-the-maternity-system/.

There’s a quiet kind of trauma unfolding in maternity wards every day — subtle, hard to name, but impossible to forget. It can happen when a couple walks into a hospital believing they have choices, only to feel those choices gradually narrowing under the weight of “policy” and “protocol.....

To all the "high-achieving mamas" out there — I see you.

I wasn’t what you’d call a high achiever before I had children. Honestly, I was still so young — unsure of who I was or what I was capable of. But I knew one thing with certainty: motherhood was exactly where I wanted to be.

The transition into motherhood felt more natural for me than it does for many. As I “grew up” alongside my five children and watched them work and study hard, estblish careers, and even some have children of their own - space slowly opened for me to explore parts of myself I hadn’t yet discovered. I began to dare, to try, and to achieve things I once didn’t think possible.

Looking back, I see now that while I may not have been considered a high achiever then, my greatest achievements were being made in the everyday moments of raising five incredible humans. They became the light that led me toward the work I now do — a career that, funnily enough, has made me a “high achiever” in a different way.

So to the mamas who’ve stepped away from careers to raise children, and to those who are navigating the beautiful chaos of doing both — I see you, I respect you, and I honour you.

To the 5 best humans in this world - I love you.

Visiting new parents 101

• Keep it short. They love you, but they also love sleep.
• No kissing the baby. Their immune system is tiny and their parents’ anxiety is huge.
• Wash your hands like you’re about to do surgery.
• Feeling sniffly? Stay home and send snacks.
• Text first. Don’t surprise-attack a newborn household.
• Go easy on the perfume. Baby wants milk, not Chanel No. 5.
• If you see dishes, wash them. If you see washing, fold it. Hero status unlocked.
• Bring food, not flowers. Bonus points if it can be eaten with one hand
• Unsolicitated advice - gahaa BIG "No No"
• Dont ask about their birth - they may be still processing. Let them tell you if they choose.

Love the baby. Support the parents. Then kindly leave.
