Planning a day on the water?

Whether you’re fishing or just enjoying a day on the boat, remember that winter boating carries extra risks. Cold water, shorter daylight hours, and fewer boats around mean there’s less margin for error – and help might not arrive quickly if something goes wrong.

Before you launch:

• Always wear your life jacket
• Carry waterproof communication
• Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature
• Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back

If you fall in, the effects of cold water immersion start immediately.

Stay safe this winter.

The finale to a Commissioning Ceremony for our new rescue vessel held last Saturday. Jane Howlett MP did the honours with Spring Vale “Salute” (thanks Tim @ Spring Vale Wines). Thanks to the Tasmanian Government for providing $1m in funding for replacement Volunteer Marine Rescue vehicles, trailers and vessels, distributed among the seven VMR units across the state, following the 2024 election. Without this funding and sponsorship from the Community Bank, Swansea and Bicheno, Bendigo Bank this new vessel would have remained a pipe dream. Thanks also to Jason, Mick and the team at Sentinel Boats for building a beaut boat.

Western Police are reminding recreational fishers to ensure they are abiding by catch limits after a number of people were caught taking excess fish and undersized/oversized fish in recent weeks.

Two men have been fined after they were caught at Ulverstone on Sunday 11 May with 43 Sand Flathead which had been cut into 85 fillets.

The possession limit for Sand Flathead on state waters in the Northern and Western Fishing Zones of Tasmania is 10 per person.

The men were also found to have a gummy shark onboard which had the dorsal fin and tail removed – in Tasmania, the dorsal and pectoral fins of gummy sharks must remain attached until the shark has been brought to land.

For further information regarding size, bag and possession limits, you can download the Fishing Tas App which also has the reporting of Rock Lobster fishing activities on it. Remember, check your catch in all respects.

📲 Anyone with information regarding illegal fishing is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Fishwatch on 0427 655 557. Information can be provided anonymously.

Heading out this Easter long weekend? Plan to come home safely.

It’s one of the busiest times on the water, so take the time to plan your trip and check your gear before you go. Involve your crew—everyone should know the basics.

Here are some simple rules for a safer day on the water:

• Check the weather, tides and sea conditions
• Know the area and your boat’s limits
• Tell someone where you're going and when you'll return
• Carry the right safety gear—and know how to use it
• Don’t overload your boat
• Always wear your life jacket
• Don’t mix alcohol and boating

Plan well, stay safe—and enjoy your time on the water.

Be Boatwise – don’t let the next trip be your last.

Important Announcement
Pls Share this so it gets around

Dear Competitors and Supporters,
As we approach our April 5-6 event, we’ve noticed lower-than-expected entries—likely due to financial commitments leading up to the event. We completely understand and respect these challenges.

To move forward, we must reach a minimum number of entries by March 14th. If we don’t hit that mark, we will reluctantly postpone the event, with all existing competitor entries and spectator tickets automatically rolling over to our confirmed November 7-8 event or refunded upon request.

If you plan to enter, we strongly encourage you to do so before March 14th. Not only will this lock in your spot at the best price, but it will also help ensure the event can proceed as planned. After this date, entry fees will increase.

Gold Pass entrants: Your spots will not be reserved at the early fee, so lock it in while you can—as you know, it always sells out quickly!
Important: As per our usual terms, all competitor entries and spectator tickets for the November event are non-refundable, unless permission is given by the Promoter.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal entrants and sponsors who got behind the event early
We truly appreciate your support and will make a final announcement next week. Stay tuned, and we hope to see you all on track soon!
