You think I’m exaggerating. I am not.
This is a real belief. And sometimes those beliefs come out of peoples mouths. 🫤
I’ve actually seen a well known fitness “influencer” here in Perth say publicly that you ‘shouldn’t take weight loss advice from a fat person’. 🙄
It feels like I’m bashing my head on a wall some days when I have to say that simply living in a bigger body is not indicative of health. And that goes for thinness too.
What should you look for in an instructor?
1. That they’re engaged and passionate
2. That they’re adequately trained in what they’re teaching you,
3. They’re committed to their own growth & development, and
4. They make you feel seen, heard, and safe.
NONE of those things correlate to fitness.
This is a great moment to check in on your unconscious bias, and consider whether you think someone who “looks unfit” would be a good movement teacher. What does “look fit” even mean?? Are you talking about how many muscles you can see or the glow in their skin? Or is it how much their skin folds, how tiny their activewear is, or how heavy they can lift? 🤷🏼♀️ How much of that is decades of influence from advertising? Now might also need extra time to consider whether you NEED your instructors to be able to “do everything” on the mat or reformer, in order to be able to do any of the 4 things above.
Look, we’ve hired people with an incredible Pilates or Asana practice and you know what? They turned out not so great at teaching, or not so great at receiving feedback, or not so great at modifying for different bodies, or not so great at holding space for the complexities of the human experience.
So the people we hire are on the full spectrum of practice ability. We don’t want you to aspire to be like them, we want you to aspire to be like YOU (only a stronger, calmer, more flexible & grounded version or whatever reason you’re stepping through our doors)
And the way we write our marketing copy and the images we choose to use and the way we recruit our team, reflect our values.
And if you just want your instructors to “look fit”… then hit us up! Cos we can recommend some other places to go where your values are a better fit 🫢😏
