Should we be telling kids to stop lining up toys?

NO WAY!

So many parents have told me that they were told that if they keep redirecting their child to play in other ways then they might be able to avoid a diagnosis of autism 😭

Why does this make me sad?

Lining up toys is not something that we only see in autistic children.
Lining up toys might be your child’s way of creating order in their world.
Lining up toys is an interest for your child and therefore an amazing opportunity for us to join them in their play and add language to the experience.
Lining up toys is a form of play and all play is play. We don’t need to teach our kids to play a certain way.

So if your kids are lining up toys (like my daughter does with her figurines in the picture), let them 🫶

During NAIDOC week 2022, I made the decision to learn more about the Country I live on as a constant habit rather than just something I do during NAIDOC week.

I often feel embarrassed that I don’t know enough about the history of this beautiful country and the people who have lived here for more than 60,000 years.

I was in an amazing role years ago where I learnt a lot about Aboriginal language, dialects, culture, health and more, but now I look back and recognise that I learnt most of this information from people who are not Aboriginal themselves.

Upon reflection, I have learnt a bit this year from some incredible Aboriginal people and organisations:
I have learnt about the Mooro Nyoongar people who lived on the land around where I live.

I have bought many bush tucker plants, and learnt about cooking with these plants.

I have visited many of the bushland areas near my home (that I have been visiting since I was a kid) with new eyes - seeing wildlife and bushes that I have learnt about.

I learned the Aboriginal meaning of the suburb names near where I live.

I learnt about the 6 Nyoongar seasons (way more accurate that those other 4 seasons as we know them!)

And my favourite part has been learning about the communication skills and tools of Aboriginal people - sign language, symbols, painting, song and spoken words and sounds.

My kids are also learning so much more than I ever did at school so I learn lots from them.

Now, I’ve heard of a few awesome Aboriginal docos and shows to watch so I can continue respectfully learning - The First Inventors on SBS is first up for me. Have you watched any others?

I’ve been very busy the last few days getting the website ready to re-launch. I’m excited because I’ve created Speech HQ - An info centre with every speech-related topic I could think of. This information will be completely free.

My online shop will be full of free downloads, larger paid digital resources AND pre-order will be open for some kits I’ve been working on.

School holidays start in just under three days so I’m on a mission to get it done and launch it next week!

What would you want me to include on the website? I want to make sure I haven’t missed anything.

Hi! It’s me. I’m the speechie, it’s me!

I’m Alex, I’m a Perth mum of three and I’ve been a speechie now for almost 15 years.

My main passion is educating parents about speech therapy topics because families can make such a difference to their children’s communication skills.

As a parent, I’m passionate about play, nature and nurturing the brain so I’m allllways reading parenting books.

In my personal life, I love spending time with my husband, food, cooking, wine, coffee, sleeping in, and reading books.

Now, I haven’t done one of these for a while, but I thought I’d play the ā€œGuess the lieā€ game.

I’m going to tell you two truths and one lie, see if you can guess the lie.

šŸ‰Watermelon is my favourite fruit šŸ˜‹

šŸ‘©ā€šŸ‘§I have the same middle name as my mum.

🦷I had to get braces twice.

Can you guess? I’ll be sharing in my stories tomorrow!

You sure have a lot of questions! And I love answering your questions. But many of you have questions that take more than just a minute or two for me to answer. I want to give you high quality answers but it often isn’t possible in a message format.

So I created this special session where you can pick my brain for 30 whole minutes. Just you and me, on a zoom call, so we can nut out whatever concerns you have.

Some of the most common discussions I have include:
🧠The teacher said my child needs a speechie, but I’m not sure why.
🧠 I have a gut feeling that I need a speechie, but maybe I actually need an OT or a paediatrician… help me decide!
🧠I want to study speech, but not sure if it’s the right fit, can we talk about what to expect?
🧠I want your input on a product I’m developing to see if it would be good for children’s speech development.
🧠We’re on a waitlist but I want to get started with some ideas at home, what should I do?

I have been loving these sessions, book yours today!

Please note that these are not speech therapy or assessment sessions for your child. You will receive a summary of the conversation and links to any important information that I recommend. You won’t receive a report, diagnosis or tailored therapy approach for your child.
