Moments in our garden ✨
Last year we bought our first home. A neat little 1970s house on only 800 square metres with big dreams for creating an urban homestead.
In 2022 we laid the foundations for this years projects, planning out our dream set up. We found affordable, eco-friendly raised garden beds, set up our coop and rabbit pen and planted many young fruit trees (banana, apple, peach, avocado, fig, passionfruit and almond).
We plan on being mostly self sufficient and outsourcing what we can't get from home through local regenerative farmers and fishers.
We have started a small population of quails for eggs and meat and we will be getting chickens and ducks for larger eggs
We plan on having a small aquaponics set up with trout and marron and growing veggies in the closed loop system
Half of our backyard grass area will be converted into veggie garden using garden beds and wire fencing to maximise our growing space
Our front yard will become a waterwise, frog, insect, bird and bee friendly space with native plants and ground cover instead of grass
During the rainy seasons we hope to collect and store in a rain water tank for the dry seasons, also reducing our fresh water usage (and bills)
The majority of our home is powered with our solar panels and eventually, we will convert our gas appliances to electrical to reduce our environmental impact.
We want to be closer to our food and honour what goes on to our plates. We want to reduce our chain of supply to 0 (from us) or 1 (shopping direct from local farmers). We want to reduce our footprint and connect with nature and our food.
I'll be sharing more about our journey here and there as we go, so if you're interested, feel free to follow along!
If you have any wisdom you'd like to share with us, we are all ears! This is completely new knowledge, trial and error for us 💓
Also, the last photo of Sunny and Radagast going on an adventure together warms my heart 😍 they're good pals!
