I used to be SO good at controlling food.
Meal prepped. Weighed everything.
Avoided sugar like it was poison.
But I was also scared of meals out.
Anxious if I didn’t know what was in the dressing.
Panicking if I ate something “off plan.”
It looked like discipline.
But it felt like fear. Obsession. Exhaustion.
Being healthy is amazing.
But if your “healthy” habits leave you anxious, isolated and bingeing
behind closed doors.. it’s not health. It’s a prison.
Food freedom isn’t about giving up.
It’s about letting go of control so you can finally feel calm around food
again.
Secret eating usually shows up when we feel like we’re “doing something wrong.”
Like eating that chocolate, or having a second slice, means we’ve failed.
So we hide it. We rush it. We eat in the car, in the pantry, when the kids aren’t looking.
But here’s the thing:
You don’t hide things you feel neutral about.
You hide things you feel ashamed of.
Secret eating isn’t about food.
It’s a reflection of how harshly you’ve been taught to judge yourself around food.
And until that part is healed the guilt, the rules, the “I should know better” food will keep feeling like something you have to hide from.
The goal isn’t to control the food harder.
It’s to change the relationship you have with it.
Here are 5 questions to ask yourself to understand your relationship with food:
Do I eat differently when I’m alone compared to when others are around?Do I feel guilty or anxious after eating something “off plan”?Is food my go-to when I’m stressed, bored, or overwhelmed?Have I labelled certain foods as “bad” or “naughty”?Am I eating to nourish my body or to fix how I feel?These questions aren’t about judgment they’re about awareness.
And with awareness, you can start making gentle, lasting shifts.
The solution isn’t another diet or stricter rules.
It’s learning how to rewire your thoughts, calm your nervous system, and build a kinder relationship with food and your body.
