🌟 **Exciting News in Western Australian Optometry!** 🌟

We are proud to share an insightful article from mivision about the unique UWA Optometry Hub and Spoke model being implemented across regional WA.

This innovative approach is revolutionising the way people in WA access comprehensive and affordable eye care, whilst enabling final year optometry students to complete their clinical placements in regional and rural communities across WA.

Neilsen has over 17 years experience working with NGO’s across the world to develop and implement innovative models to improve access to eye care services. When he is not seeing patients at Melville Optical Clinic, he is working with the UWA optometry team to support the development of eye care services in Western Australia.

A unique hub and spoke model initiated and supported by the University of Western Australia (UWA) is creating “very rich rural and remote and cultural experiences” for optometry students and helping to meet key recommendations set out in the Vision 2030 report.1

This NAIDOC Week, we honor the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Neilsen is a member of the WA Aboriginal Eye Health Advisory Group and part of the UWA Optometry academic team at the forefront of integrating eye care services into Aboriginal Medical Services. Our goal is to improve access to culturally safe eye care and close the gap in eye health disparities.

By empowering the future optometry workforce with the knowledge and skills to deliver culturally safe care, we’re enabling more optometrists to actively improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
