I recently had the opportunity to speak with Founded By Women about the evolving landscape of cancer care, where more and more people are seeking both conventional treatment and holistic support.

In our conversation, I shared how my work at Surya Health serves as a bridge between these two worlds. With over 20 years of experience, a PhD in psychosocial support for cancer patients, and training in naturopathy and yoga therapy, I walk beside those navigating cancer, offering informed non-judgemental support.

It was an honour to be featured in this article, and I’m grateful to share a little of my journey and the philosophy that guides my work.

Yoga for chronic illness, cancer recovery & life's harder seasons.

This isn’t just yoga. It’s a space for people who need something different, more attuned - supported by a yoga therapist with the understanding, experience, and adaptability to meet you where you are.

With a trauma-sensitive approach and a deep understanding of chronic illness and cancer care, Chandrika offers practices that prioritise self-compassion, interoception, and body acceptance.

We move with awareness... slowly unfreezing what feels stuck, and reconnecting with the body in ways that feel safe, supportive, and real.

There’s something quietly powerful about the way light breaks through the clouds, the trees, or even the cracks in a room.

It reminds us that no matter how heavy the skies may feel, light always finds a way in.

In the middle of busy schedules, grief, illness, burnout or uncertainty - those rays of light can be small moments of calm, connection, or even just remembering to breathe.

You don’t need to have it all together to show up. Just come as you are, and let the light find you.

Slow Flow Vinyasa is a thoughtfully chosen, breath-linked sequence of postures that guides you through a journey - from lying down, to seated, kneeling, and standing, then back down again to seated, inversions, and deep rest.

We may even explore a playful moment upside down. No headstands or handstands required, but if you're curious, we’re here to help you build the foundations!

From the Sanskrit meaning “to place in a special way,” vinyasa yoga is great for those wanting to build strength, balance, and flexibility in a calm, supportive space.

Join us in person or online, every Thursday from 9:30am to 10:30am. Book here: https://suryahealth.punchpass.com/classes

We offer a variety of yoga styles to support you through life’s many seasons. Whether you’re managing stress, supporting your mental health, or finding your way back into movement after illness or injury.

You’ll learn tools that go beyond the mat, like self awareness and breath regulation. These skills can be especially helpful in real life moments of challenge, whether you’re navigating therapy, sitting in a waiting room, or simply trying to manage the mental load of everyday life.

Yin yoga offers a slower, more meditative pace, where poses are held for longer periods to encourage deep stretching and release. This gentle practice supports relaxation, improves flexibility, and helps quiet the mind.

It’s especially beneficial for those with busy lifestyles, fatigue/illness recovery, anyone looking to reduce stress and anxiety, or those who find it challenging to slow down and silence mental chatter.

Yin classes are available in person or online, Tuesday 6:30pm - 7:30pm.

Our Story

From our very first experiences with yoga, both of us knew that this would be an important aspect of our lives. The ability to tune in to the felt sensations, to slow the busy mind, and to explore movement in subtle and interesting ways intrigued us. For many years our meditation practice was central, along with attending regular yoga classes, and developing our skills through education and training in naturopathy and yoga teaching (Chandrika), massage, caring, social work and counselling (Satyam). As we have matured into our 40’s we’ve both achieved plenty of our career goals; being able to work in cancer and palliative care settings, Masters degrees in our respective fields, and now Chandrika is embarking on her PhD in integrative oncology. What we have come to understand is just how important keeping mentally and physically active, strong, and supple is in order to live out our dreams. The emphasis in our practices has gradually shifted to what we feel is ‘intelligent asana’, a mindful approach to moving and being. There’s room for many different approaches to yoga to suit different people during different phases of life. We hope that our small studio (max 10 students) is an inviting space where we can offer you the tools of yoga and support you to find the yoga that works for you. Each week during term time we have 5 classes on the schedule - dynamic vinyasa on Monday nights and Saturday mornings, meditative yin on Tuesday nights, therapeutic hatha on Wednesday evenings - ideal if you’re dealing with challenges on any level, and women’s wellness hatha on Thursday evenings to honour the particular phases of women’s lives including pre and post natal care.
