Joondalup Health Campus expands with 60 new public patient beds 🏥

Joondalup Health Campus has reached a major milestone, with the official opening of two new wards for public patients, marking the completion of the $307.9 million expansion funded by the State and Australian Governments

The wards were officially opened by the Hon. Meredith Hammat MLA, Minister for Health; the Hon. John Carey MLA, Minister for Health Infrastructure; and Tom French MP, Member for Moore, alongside representatives from North Metropolitan Health Service and Ramsay Health Care.

These new medical and surgical beds will strengthen the hospital's capacity and care provided for residents in Perth's growing northern corridor.

The completed expansion delivers significant improvements across the campus, including increased emergency department capacity, new inpatient beds across medical, surgical, mental health and cardiac services, a new theatre, two interventional catheterisation laboratories, expanded pre- and post-operative facilities, a new discharge lounge, additional parking, and enhanced supporting infrastructure.

Artificial intelligence (AI) breakthrough could predict heart attack risk years earlier 🔬📉

Developed by Edith Cowan University Professor Joshua Lewis, a process is showing how routine scans could help identify heart disease risk well before symptoms appear.

It began with a simple question while working as a research fellow at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital - could bone scans reveal more than bone health?

That question led Professor Lewis to explore how DEXA bone density scans, combined with AI, could detect heart disease risk years earlier.

Using low-dose DEXA scans, typically used to assess osteoporosis, the AI can identify early calcium build-up in the abdominal aorta, a key warning sign of future heart attack risk.

This creates an opportunity for earlier intervention, supporting lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of heart disease.

By reducing reliance on specialist review, the approach could make early detection more accessible and scalable.

National Volunteer Week starts today and we want to say a big thank you to all our incredible volunteers who play a vital role in helping us care for our community 💙

Meet Teresa, one of our amazing volunteers at Osborne Park Hospital 👋

As an Occupational Therapy clinic volunteer, she supports the team each week with non-clinical tasks that help patients on their recovery journey.

For Teresa, volunteering is a chance to give back while gaining experience ahead of completing her Masters in Dietetics later this year.

A big congratulations to Rob Mundy and Gemma Hadwell, who were announced as our 2026 Rotary Nurse of the Year winners for Sir Charles Gairdner and Osborne Park Hospitals, and Rochelle Pamintuan who received the Lorraine Johnson Preceptor Award.👏

The Rotary Nurse of the Year awards recognise nurses who have demonstrated innovation and excellence in health care by advancing the profession, building partnerships and making a difference in their area of practice.

Nurse Manager Rob was recognised for strengthening teamwork, increasing morale and encouraging a workplace where staff feel valued and respected at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Gemma was described as a beacon of light for staff at Osborne Park Hospital, advocating for her team and patients in practical, visible ways.

The Lorraine Johnson Preceptor Award acknowledges a preceptor in healthcare which is an experienced clinician who guides and mentors a newer practitioner through hands-on clinical work.

Rochelle was nominated by her peers for sharing her knowledge and showing a great enthusiasm for teaching the next generation of nurses.

Well done to all involved, including the finalists. 👏

1 game-changing robot. 100 patients cared for. 🎉

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) has reached an impressive 100‑patient milestone with its new robotic bronchoscopy. This groundbreaking technology is helping clinicians diagnose and remove small cancerous nodules in the peripheral lung, where conventional biopsy tools face limitations.

Yesterday, Minister of Health for Medical Research, the Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, visited SCGH to acknowledge the milestone and see firsthand the remarkable work of the teams involved.

The achievement reflects the dedication of our people to identify opportunities to provide high quality care, including the use of evolving technology and precision medicine.

A huge congratulations to all those involved, including our respiratory, surgical, nursing (bronchoscopy and theatre), anaesthesia, cytopathology teams, procurement, radiology and research teams. 👏

The bronchoscopy robot equipment was made possible thanks to funding from the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund and generous donations by the McCusker Charitable Foundation, Charlies Foundation for Research and the Institute for Respiratory Health.

A beautiful surprise for our patients at King Edward Memorial Hospital 💜💐

Flower installations used for the City of Subiaco’s Subi Blooms event, were transformed into Mother’s Day bouquets for our patients to enjoy, bringing colour, kindness and plenty of smiles.

Wrapped in artwork designed by students from Subiaco Primary School and delivered with care, the bouquets were especially meaningful for new parents Zoe and John, who were delighted to receive one alongside baby Otto.
