A revolutionary device developed here in Western Australia and being trialled at King Edward Memorial Hospital has been described as the biggest development in fetal monitoring in 50 years.

Our very own Maternal Fetal Medicine Service Consultant and The University of Western Australia Medical School Associate Professor Scott White has been working with inventors for seven years to get the groundbreaking wireless device to this milestone trials stage.

Developed by WA medtech company VitalTrace along with UWA researchers, it has been tested at King Edward Memorial Hospital and two other Australian public hospitals as part of the device's development pathway,

Supported by our Government’s Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, the device transmits real-time information from a sensor to a monitor using wireless technology, enabling mothers to move around freely during labour while healthcare professionals monitor the baby's wellbeing.

The device measures lactate, the natural substance produced by cells when they use glucose for energy production when the body lacks oxygen to assess a baby's wellbeing in labour. Traditional techniques look at monitoring different changes in baby's heart rate patterns.

Congratulations to everyone involved 👏

BreastScreen WA has delivered three million free screening mammograms since opening in 1989.

We are so proud of the incredible BreastScreen WA team, who are dedicated to saving lives through early detection. The three million milestone reflects a significant impact on so many women throughout WA. Their efforts have made a real difference in our community.

Since the service commenced in 1989 the team have averaged around 135,000 screenings per year across 100 towns and community areas in WA.

The team reached one million screens after 19 years in 2008, then nine years later in 2017 reached two million screens. It has taken only eight years to reach the third million in 2025.

Well done team!

A patient recently highlighted the amazing service their loved one received from our staff at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

"My spouse recently had surgery and we would like to say how impressed we were with the quality of care we received from all staff we saw in pre-admission, recovery, G52 and G66, the surgical team, anaesthetists, nurse and support staff.

"Everyone we saw was friendly, caring and professional which made a very scary admission for my spouse so much easier. We felt listened to and supported all the way through."

June and July is the Noongar season of Makuru. It is the coldest and wettest time of the year when the rivers fill and lots of animals, including Mali (Black Swan), start pairing up in preparation for breeding in the next season. Traditionally, this was a time when Noongar people moved inland from the coast and made bookas (animal skin cloaks) to keep warm as the nights became colder. We are highlighting the six Noongar seasons as one of the ways we recognise and celebrate events of cultural significance to Noongar people.

Our Hospital in the Home service is expanding with more patients soon to receive care in the comfort of their own home.

The service is available at Sir Charles Gairdner and Osborne Park Hospitals and enables eligible patients to receive treatment away from a hospital setting in the familiar surroundings of their own home.

Patients are visited at home each day by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals and can be seen by nurses up to twice daily if required.

In the past year, the Hospital in the Home service cared for more than 600 patients in the comfort of their own home.

Today we wrap up a wonderful week of activities across our sites to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2025. 🖤❤️💛
The week provides the opportunity to learn more about First Nations cultures and histories and our teams enjoyed some fantastic activities that enabled them to participate in celebrating the oldest, continuous living culture on earth.
All our teams across NMHS were invited to attend a collaborative canvas art workshop, a Noongar singing workshop, and a Bush tucker talk and tasting.
Congratulations to Niamh from SCGH who won the collaborative artwork.
Mental Health Services and Dental Health Services joined together for smoking ceremonies and traditional music and morning tea.
NAIDOC Week events are an important opportunity for us to create a space where the stories, traditions, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are cherished and celebrated.
It all forms part of our strategic objectives to partner with our communities and become the best place to work.
Congratulations to all involved 👏👏

Celebrations have been in full swing at King Edward Memorial hospital this week as part of NAIDOC Week.

This year marks 50 years of NAIDOC and the 2025 theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, celebrates achievements of the past and the bright future ahead.

Activities at King Edward Memorial Hospital have included a water ceremony, creation of an incredible sand mural and coolamon carving.

The Women and Newborn Health Service annual NAIDOC Week award was presented to Jascinta Sweetman who was recognised as having a profound impact on the lives of families in the Aboriginal Midwifery Group Practice program.

The annual award recognises staff who have demonstrated a strong commitment towards building and maintaining a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal staff, patients and their families.

Congratulations to Jascinta and everyone involved in creating such unique and meaningful celebrations to help increase our knowledge and understanding of First Nations history and culture.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is the first hospital in Western Australia to provide robotic bronchoscopy procedures, marking a major development in lung cancer diagnosis and care in the state.

SCGH is one of very few hospitals in Australia to use robotic bronchoscopy and is the first hospital to use this device integrated into routine clinical practice in Australia.

The new robotic bronchoscopy will provide minimally invasive care, designed to support the biopsy of small, hard-to-reach nodules in the peripheral lung offering new hope for earlier, more accurate diagnosis of lung cancer.

The bronchoscopy equipment has been made possible thanks to our amazing Respiratory Team and funding from the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund and generous donations by the McCusker Foundation, Charlies Foundation for Research and the Institute for Respiratory Health.

Well done to all involved 👏
