Congratulations to our team of midwives at Women and Newborn Health Service, whose study on midwifery antenatal and postnatal service will now be used to help inform the introduction of contemporary midwifery services across Australia and assist health services to scale up midwifery care.
Titled ‘Midwifery Antenatal Postnatal Service (MAPS): A Retrospective Cohort Study Exploring Perinatal Outcomes and Consumer Satisfaction’, the study was recently published in Women and Birth Journal.
Trialled at Osborne Park Hospital, the study aimed to explore the perinatal outcomes of women with the MAPS program, compared to those receiving standard maternity care.
Midwifery Antenatal Postnatal Service differs from traditional midwifery group practice models by continuity being interrupted during the intrapartum care which is provided by a rostered hospital-based midwife.
The women reported building an invaluable partnership with their midwife who they saw for all of their appointments and increased levels of trust and comfort arising from open communication.
Congratulations to everyone involved. 👏👏

An innovative approach being embraced by our transplant team at Sir Charlies Gairdner Hospital will enable more Western Australians to receive a liver transplant.

In an Australian first, the team is using a liver perfusion machine to rejuvenate donated livers by combining cold and warm perfusion methods.

It is estimated that this technology could increase liver transplants in WA by a remarkable 70%.

The cold perfusion infuses cold oxygenated fluid into the liver, recovers the liver and prevents complications, especially in the bile ducts. This is followed by warm perfusion, which infuses oxygenated blood at body temperature allowing surgeons to further improve and assess if the liver is suitable to transplant.

There are now plans to adopt similar technology for kidney transplants to help those on the kidney wait list.

Last week we celebrated Harmony Week across NMHS by wearing orange, participating in team building activities and hosting a special North Danjoo Yacker event which provided information, case studies and advice for communicating with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds.

Ministerial Multicultural Advisory Council WA member and Senior Lecturer at Curtin University, Dr S Zaung Nau, shared her firsthand research on barriers to health system access for Myanmar refugees in WA, and explained how clinicians can enhance support for CaLD patients.

Dr Nau's presentation was followed by cultural responsiveness training, facilitated by Multicultural Futures, which included information and tips on ways to increase intercultural awareness and understanding.

At North Metropolitan Health Service, we are committed to providing opportunities for our people to strengthen cross-cultural understanding, create inclusive work environments and ensure equitable access to health services for all Australians.

It's World Oral Health Day! This year's global theme, “a happy mouth… a happy life” highlights the importance of caring for our mouths at every stage of life - from birth through to older age.

More than one million students have been enrolled in our School Dental Service since its inception. Every year, our teams provide care to more than 110,000 students.

The Smiling Starts Early Childhood Dental Program represents our next chapter of growth, expanding services into the earliest years of life and addressing a critical gap in oral health care.

The program aims at making a real difference as early as possible and assisting children with developing good oral health habits.

A big thank you to everyone at our Dental Health Service for the incredible work you do to support the community.

To keep your mouth happy, remember to:
🦷 Brush twice a day with an age-appropriate toothpaste
🥤 Limit sugary foods and drinks
💧 Choose tap water as the main drink
✔️ Have regular dental check-ups

Supporting recovery through therapeutic activities ✨

Our nursing team at the Frankland Centre, part of the State Forensic Mental Health Service, has received high praise for its therapeutic activities, which are designed to support recovery and wellbeing.

Initiatives such as exercise groups, self‑care nights, and shared food and games are integrated into care, helping to reduce feelings of isolation, encourage meaningful patient–nurse interactions, strengthen social connections and build self‑esteem - all important elements of patient‑centred mental health care.

A patient has highlighted the fantastic care from nurse Trevor, who is part of our Hospital in the Home (HITH) Service.

"Trevor visited my 94 year old mum today as part of the HITH program and he was courteous, thorough, professional and generally a b***dy legend. Made mum feel listened too and well cared for. Good on you."

Thank you to Trevor and our whole HITH team for providing exceptional care to our community.

Our Older Adults at Selby Older Adult Mental Health Service were treated to the joy of music recently when the allied health team organised a visit from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra as part of its Community program.

Research shows that music can help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and stimulate memory in older adults, including those living with dementia or depression.

Smiles, moments of reminiscence and cheers of “bravo!” were heard in the room along with requests to “come back every week”.

The music experience highlighted the powerful role of music in supporting emotional wellbeing, cognitive function, and social connection.
