Our radiation oncology team from the Cancer Centre at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital recently celebrated the inaugural World Radiotherapy Awareness Day on 7 September.
The team decorated the ward for the day which aims to raise awareness of the essential role of radiation therapy in treating cancer, relieving symptoms and improving quality of life for patients.
Wishing Aldo a very happy first Father's Day, following the recent birth of baby Sailor at Osborne Park Hospital.
Aldo said he's looking forward to spending the day getting lots of newborn cuddles and settling in at home as a new family of three.
Happy Father's Day to all dads, stepdads, foster dads, soon-to-be dads, grandads and father figures. ❤️

To celebrate Women’s Health Week our Women and Newborn Health Service went about reminding the women who deliver our services to prioritise their health and wellbeing.
‘Say yes to YOU’ was this year’s theme asking women to take a moment to get up to date with their own health checks.
Women’s Health Week is celebrated from 1 to 5 September each year and is dedicated to the health and wellbeing of all women, girls and gender-diverse people.

The Women and Newborn Health Service was recently presented with the national Every Week Counts Collaborative Champions Award at the Every Week Counts Learning Session.
Every Week Counts brings together an alliance of hospitals across Australia to promote evidence-based messaging that, providing it's medically safe, it's much better for a baby’s development to remain in the womb until 39 to 40 weeks.
Early births are linked to an increased risk of short, medium and long-term risks for baby, including increased risk of developmental problems. Those last few weeks of pregnancy are crucial developmental phases and where it's medically safe, it's best to keep baby in the womb.
Our service was awarded for harnessing leadership across King Edward and Osborne Park Hospitals to bring together a fully engaged multidisciplinary team for the prevention of preterm birth.
Congratulations to our teams! 👏👏

Blessie is a registered nurse with our Hospital in the Home (HITH) team and with our service expanding, she has shared why she loves working in the team and why it might suit you too.
HITH provides patients with the opportunity to receive acute inpatient care in the comfort of their own home, away from a hospital setting.
After moving from Sydney to Perth for a better work-life balance, Blessie joined the HITH team and said she could not be happier.
"The team here is so supportive and the flexibility has been a game-changer," she said. "If you’re looking for a fresh start, a great team and meaningful work that fits your lifestyle, I honestly couldn’t recommend Hospital in the Home more."
If you're a nurse and are interested in joining the HITH the team, there are currently registered and clinical nurses positions available.
Janey Hakanson is the true definition of altruism and selflessness ❤️
That’s because six years ago Janey donated her kidney not to a relative or a loved one but to a complete stranger.
Janey was inspired to donate after working with patients in the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Dialysis Unit.
She says seeing patients lives ruled by dialysis really made her think and she realised she had something to give that could completely change someone's life.
Janey’s brave decision to donate a kidney, via the Australian and New Zealand Paired Kidney Exchange program, shines a very important light on the less talked about, but equally vital role of living donors.

This Speech Pathology Week we share a story of perseverance, recovery and love, thanks to our Osborne Park Hospital treatment teams.
Anne-Marie and Steven both experienced a stroke three years ago which affected the language centres of their brains. After receiving their initial care at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, they were transferred to Osborne Park Hospital to undertake rehabilitation with our speech pathologists.
"I owe so much to the team, I will never forget how much they helped me,” Steven said.
Meanwhile Anne-Marie was on her own journey to recovery and it was at OPH that the two first met. As they got to know each other, Steven said the friendship grew into a romance and they have now been together for more than 18 months.
Speech Pathology Week runs from 24 to 30 August 2025 and aims to raise awareness of the ways speech pathologists support and strengthen communication in our communities.

Djilba is one of the six Noongar seasons that covers August and September. It is known as the season of conception.
Throughout Djilba we see the emergence of new life as gardens reinvigorate the grass trees/balgas stand tall and animal parents introduce their babies to the wide world.
Traditionally, the main food sources for Noongar people throughout Djilba would be land based grazing animals such as the Yongar (Kangaroo), the Waitj (emu) and the Koomal (possum).
We are highlighting the seasons on the Noongar calendar as part of our focus on recognising and celebrating the culture and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
