🌍 World Mental Health Day – 10 October 2024 🌍

This year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is focusing on the connection between mental health and work.

Challenging working conditions including lack of job security, limited autonomy, or discrimination, can significantly harm mental well-being. If such factors exist they can reduce job satisfaction, lower productivity, and lead to increased absences and turnover. It has been found that poor mental health results in the loss of approximately 12 billion workdays each year.

While this is changing, the stigma surrounding mental health remains a significant barrier, discouraging people from seeking help or maintaining employment. To help this employers can play a key role by fostering inclusive and supportive workplaces, providing reasonable accommodations like regular check-ins, scheduled breaks, or flexible working arrangements. Training managers to recognise and address workplace stressors is also critical in creating environments where workers feel valued and supported.

Action is needed across all levels to implement policies that prioritise mental health and prevent psychosocial risks. By working together, we can create workplaces that enable everyone to participate, thrive, and enjoy their work.

🌟 Embracing Mindfulness for a Happier Life 🌟

In recent years, there's been a growing interest in understanding well-being and how we can achieve it. True well-being is a state of peacefulness, unaffected by external conditions, allowing us to remain calm even in the face of life's challenges.

Achieving this state involves developing the capacity to observe our thoughts, quiet our minds, and courageously face our emotions. As we cultivate objectivity and openness, a natural sense of restfulness emerges.

Mindfulness is a powerful tool in this journey, offering various methods to help us access this peaceful state of being.

Benefits of Mindfulness
💫Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Lowers cortisol levels.
💫Enhances Emotional Regulation: Promotes better responses to situations.
💫Improves Focus and Concentration: Boosts attention span.
💫Promotes Better Sleep: Manages insomnia.
💫Boosts Overall Well-being: Fosters a sense of calm.

Psychologists integrate mindfulness into therapy through:
✨Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR): Reduces stress and improves well-being.
✨Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT): Prevents depression relapse.
✨Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Regulates emotions and improves relationships.

A psychologist can guide you through mindfulness techniques, tailored to your needs, ensuring you fully benefit from mindfulness.

You can start your journey towards well-being by booking an appointment - visit our website or call us on 1300 70 50 55.

✨Understanding & Supporting PTSD - PTSD Awareness Month:

June is PTSD Awareness Month. At Perth Psychologists, we want to raise awareness about PTSD and offer our support.

So what is PTSD and how is it different from normal stressful events?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) starts with experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It can cause a range of symptoms, including flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and repetitive thoughts about the event. Now we can experience this with many upsetting events. But typically, due to our inbuilt “adaptation reflex”, we can adapt back to our well-being baseline within about 8-12 weeks. It is hard but with reflection and support, we get on with our lives, hopefully with more awareness.

With PTSD it’s different. Here the event is more challenging, or bigger than our current resources. In this case, the above symptoms persist and can significantly impact daily life, making it difficult for us to function normally.

Understanding this difference can help reduce the shame or stigma that can come from not being able to get over the event/s easily. This is the time for external help or intervention, so we can receive the support we need as soon as possible.

Why Awareness Matters:
✨Reduces Stigma: Many with PTSD hesitate to seek help due to shame or stigma ('why can’t I get over this one?').
✨Promotes Early Intervention: Early recognition leads to less trauma and earlier recovery. The problem with leaving it too long is that we start to build a new set of beliefs and behaviours to cope with it, often ones that make our life more untrusting, self-protective or smaller in some way. Then we have to treat 2 traumas: the primary trauma of the event; and the secondary trauma of all the ways we’ve changed to cope with it.
✨Supports Recovery: PTSD responds to therapies like CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). It may take time and courage, but we are not alone, and we have someone who understands the journey.
